Regulars Rides: Ali's Ducati Sport Classic

- Ali rescued this beautiful Ducati Sport Classic from being a lobby display bike and put it back where it belongs; on the track. Taking part in the Bike Shed Cafe Racer Cup, Ali placed 2nd just behind MCN senior road tester and nemesis Adam Child.
Ali is a known Ducati enthusiast having owned 20+ of the brand's bikes, a few of which have ended up in the hands of Bike Shed staff since.
The previous owner swapped out the SportClassic frontend for the Ducati 999r's after having an accident a few years ago. Ali agrees with the wisdom of this move!

As someone that owns two of them, if they brought it back and it didn't suck, I'd pre-order the day the ordering banks were opened.
Got my first bike when I was 17. Every bike I've owned from the age of 22 has been used for track days. Ducati is the only make I've never taken for a slide and I've owned several.
Finally a bike built to actually be ridden hard with a real seat, road worthy tires, and a front fender! Function first, form second! Kudos to Ali, he is using all the tires have to give!!

great video and happy to see a ducatista from UK with so much passion. I am a ducatista myself (4 ducatis currently in my garage being a GT1000 one of them) and yes it is about passion, great sound, high performance and style. all together in one package...and let's be honest when I pass by there is literally no one who does not turn his head to look at them...:-D

Hi. The exhaust is from a pieroBON (maybe F042 model?) and is absolutely modified-shortened. The "flat spot" is originaly made to give clearance but as it is mounted here it's purely useless... Still this sportclassic custom is a must. Great looking bike and surely performing way better than the original.

lol starting my ducati i have to hold the starter and just blip the throttle a ton and pray. watching him just poke the starter and watching it fire up makes me really realize i need to fix my bike.

Great looking bike! Although that doesn't look like a 999r front end. The lower machined section that the caliper bolts is different to the 999r. Perhaps its from 1098r?
Cracking bike
Yours seem to be a GT1000 that was converted into a Sport 1000 mate. If memory serves, original Sport 1000 has a single shock at the back which is on left, so different swingarm too.
3 version features the symetrical swingarm setup: the biposto 1000, the fairing 1000s (which differs from the single shock paul smart version) and the gt. all 3 lack the dry clutch but if not mistaken the gt casing is grey (the biposto and 1000s casing is black).
I’ve had an ‘08 Sport since new and it has twin rear shocks. Pretty sure it was the first model in the line to have them

Nice bike if you had the chance to buy a 79 ducati desmo 900ss would you leave it as standard or upgrade all the suspension and brakes, it's in a state so all would have to be rebuilt anyway.

I love it, but the older I get the more I appreciate bikes that looks retro:ish to have conventional forks with axial calipers. Exactly like the new Speed Twin. But I am a bit of a hypocrite as I really love digital speedoes. Does anybody remember the old oil cooled Thruxton with öhlins suspension, forged wheels and d2 speedo? That for me was the ultimate retro bike. But yeah. the older I get the more I like the normal look of traditional suspension. But like I said I am a bit of a hypocrite :P Anyway I love this bike, I could have owned one but I bought an d675 instead at that time because of how light a d675 is.

Man, that clutch fluid goes dark real quick. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had changed it out the week prior.

The irony that this is easily one of Ducati’s easiest and oldest pieces of machinery to produce but they simply don’t to keep mystique is why people don’t care forever to chase down the Duke dream. That bike is a riot and was a cheap as chips (relatively) when they came out especially after the MH looking thing. The better looking stylistic job. Anyways. Come on Ducati. Pump them out. People want them. Put the smarts on them and get the money you want. The noise is really the only thing that people truly love, I fall out of love with the looks of bikes regularly, none more than Ducati. But they do have the odd looker that’s undeniable.
