It drives me nuts when people see a play or two of Bird’s and say that he’s like Luka or Dirk. Hold up. They are like him. And poor imitations imo. There’ll never be another Bird. Ever. Great reaction btw.

    "Larry Bird was trash talking?"
Dude, Larry was the trash talker. When Dennis Rodman was starting in the NBA they had him guarding Larry. A little bit into one game Larry ran over to the opposing coach and said "you gonna send anyone out here to guard me or not? I'm wide open"
James Worthy also once said something like "Playing against Jordan made you look slow. Playing against Bird made you look dumb."

Larry Joe Bird. In the 9 years before his back/foot injuries... 3 rings (5 finals), 3 MVPs, 2 Finals MVPs, averaged 25/10/6. Had the first 2 40/50/90 seasons and was fractions away from 2 more before those. His team won 60+ games 6 times, never winning less than 56 and once going 67-15, 4th best ever at the time before expansion. He is still the fastest to reach 10k points, 5k rebounds and 3k assists. That's quite a peak.

From 85 - he retired, Larry played with a broken back that would lose its structural stability. It would lock up in abnormal positions. He would have to get adjustments just to be able to play. Sometimes going straight to the hospital after a game. To spend the night in traction. That's just one of the injuries that he played with. He didn't even use any pain meds, shots, etc. for any of his injuries. Yet he was still able to dominate and put up stats. He was the FOUNDING member of the 50/40/90 twice. He led the league in 3 pointers twice 85,86. FIRST 3pt contest winner in 86 then 87, 88. MVP 84 , 85, 86.. 2 Finals MVPs, 12 All star, 10 all NBA Teams, 3x All Defense selection. All in 13 years. It took Bird just two seasons to get his first ring. Larry turned the Celtics around his first season. From a 29 - 53 season to 61 - 21 season. Larry's one of 8 hall of famers to win rookie of the year & be named to the all NBA first team. The only one so far to have those honors after Larry is Tim Duncan. Larry Bird is the only player to win Rookie of the Year, League MVP, Finals MVP, All-Star MVP, coach of the year & executive of the year. Larry is the only player Jordan couldn't beat. 6 -0 playoffs; 17 - 11 reg. Here's some of his highlights.

@@ronniedeclue3567 I'm sorry, but I really hate when people use that excuse. Yet bring up or has as a negative bullet point against Larry. The 63pt game. Even though you haven't yet. I had a feeling it might. It's as if no one wants to accept what a fantastic, all around, fundamental player Larry was. Mental toughness to play with broken back. A mangled finger from college. That changed the way the ball felt for him. Yet still dominated. Backed up his trash talking. Clutch. Kept the ball moving. I.Q. off the charts. His passing is on another level. His full court passes are poetry in motion. Yes, Jordan was a phenomenal player. No doubt. Took the NBA to another level. But come on, people need to start giving respect on Larry. Larry's a legend.

When Larry got going in big games it was like he entered God-mode. He knew what to do and obeyed his feelings with supreme success. He'd make Magic-like passes, he'd alter the arc on his shots last second against oncoming 7-footers, he'd pick off a crucial pass or make a perfect steal. All the while, you'd be watching the game wondering how this statue was able to move like this when he needed to. I've never seen anything like Larry's basketball mind at work in my life.

One thing people overlook with Bird is that the vast majority of his 3pt attempts were taken under duress (trying to win a game w/ a guy in his face), or well beyond the arc with time expiring - and he STILL had a career 37.6% 3P%. If he played in today's game, with the way offenses move the ball to clear for open 3 Pt looks, he'd have shot well over 40% from 3 Pt range. He might very well have had a few years where he approached 50%. I mean, look in his prime years, with time expiring, shooting on the run, or with guys in his face, he was shooting 40%+ from 3 Pt range.
      His 3 MVP years he averaged roughly 51% FG, 42% 3Pt, 90% FT, 10 R/G, 7 A/G.

I watched Bird play his whole career, fight Dr. J, Kareem, Rodman, Laimbeer, and Magic, and will probably go down as the greatest rivalry ever between two teams(Lakers, Celtics). Both Bird and Magic actually saved the NBA, not Jordan because the league was failing back in '79 before Bird & Magic came into the NBA in 1980. After '80 the games started to be televised instead of tape delay as it previously had been, and just to think it all started back in '79 when Indiana State played Michigan State for the national title or Bird vs. Magic!!!

You need to watch a complete classic game from the ‘80s involving Bird. The game was so much different back then and my mind much more entertaining.
Bird played in a era of some of the greatest players in history. He was a huge trash talker and if he had been able to play healthy he would be the GOAT.

Magic & Larry both wiki-listed at 6'9" but as all the pictures show, Larry was noticeably taller. I think Magic was more 6'8"½ and Larry 6'9"½, though some pics you'll swear the gap is even bigger.

Here's a little known fact about The Larry Legend. When all his teammates had gone home after practice, Bird would still be out on the court shooting jump shots (more like one inch hop shots) from all over half court distances for hours on end, hundreds of them. He would do this after every practice and then do it left handed! Complete and total dedication to the game and his WILL to win never wavered.
When he started his career, there was no three point line otherwise his PPG average would be much higher. Stats don't always tell the whole story, they can be misleading. Ninety percent from the Free Throw Line, out rebound the best players and a high assist rate as well, steals too, not to mention hustle. 84, 85 and 86, MVP! Three Championships! Magic had five, but he had more help. Bird was the GREATEST CLUTCH SHOOTER OF ALL TIME. The Legend MADE his teammates great players. He MADE his teammates play above and beyond their skills. That's leadership and a true sign of greatness, however, you won't find that on any Stat Sheet.
He also played with injuries and a bad back all the time. One game he played with a Fractured Right Cheekbone, went to the locker room and came back out to finish the game, picked up where he left off and WON it! He had to retire after 13 years because of his cumulative injuries, bone spurs and his BAD BACK. He had no choice. He tore his body up hustling for possession of that ball. How many players in today's NBA would play severely injured? He could play in any era. If he played in today's NBA, he would school all these youngsters and make them look stupid doin it. FACT.
MR. LARRY BIRD IS THE G.O.A.T!

Larry Bird is the best all-around player in NBA history. He can shoot from anywhere on the court, he is one of the best foul shooters ever, one of the best passers ever and has the 2nd best winning percentage ever.
    If you look at
    pts per game,
    rebounds per game,
    assists per games,
    field goal pct.,
    steals per game,
    blocks per game,
    foul shot pct.,
    minutes per game and
winning pct for games played in,
Bird is in the top 250 players of all time in every category and in the top 60 in 7 of the 9 categories.
No other player in the history of the NBA is in the top 250 in all those categories.
