Viral Vectors

Viral vectors are used for gene transfer. Scientists take advantage of the innate abilities of viruses to infuse their genetic material into a cell but instead use viruses to transfer desired genes. For example, genes coding for insulin production in the case of diabetes, leaving the genes which allow the virus to replicate intact.
Different viruses are being employed in gene therapy with varying levels pathogenicity and immunogenicity.
