  • Here's the new classic Tamiya inspired WP-14 FAV.
This is the WPL released version of the jointly developed Pinecone 1612, but with a few upgraded features. The WPL version has an open front differential and locked rear to give great realistic handling and better steering. it also has a higher power control board for greater speed. The electronics also include a three wire hobby grade type servo for easier upgrade of the steering control.
Since it arrived a few days ago it's had a lot of sets of wheels fitted. Been totally submerged in our pond and been completely in parts before being reassembled.
It's also been subjected to the attention of my rotary cutter tool.
The good news is that after being allowed to dry out after its bath, it still ran.
So what have we got? A great fun little car with some lovely scale features. The plastics are quite soft, which means the steering and suspension is not hugely precise BUT it has also just survived me crashing it into the washing line and lawn edging. It's been bitten by the dog and rolled over a lot.
It's faster than I expected. I don't actually think it needs to be any faster than this. Dynamically it handles like a rear engined rail would. The high CG caused by the 280 motor sitting above the transmitting gives it a pleasing roll and bounce in the rear. However the 4x4 keeps it controllable and the front wheels can be felt pulling it back into line on looser surfaces.
Scale wise I think it's larger than the 1/16 it's promoted as. It even looks too big next to a C24, so along with the wheel size I'm claiming that it's loosely 1/12. It'll look awesome on a trailer behind a C34/44. With some reconfiguration of the electronics it will easily fit a 5"ish figure in a realistic driving position. These things are tiny IRL.
Although WPL wheels do 'fit' they aren't quite right. The hexes are shorter than WPL and there is a risk of binding the wheels against the hubs, plus the offset of the WPL wheels means they hit the steering arm on the knuckle at the front, and sit a long way out at the rear. More thinking is required to get cooler wheels on these.
The tyres are not pneumatic but the rubber of the tyres is very soft. It drove well this evening on the short dusty grass of my back garden. It has enough speed and grip to roll over at will.
I'm really enjoying this one, I've been tinkering and driving all evening. It's not a high end basher, it's not a super fast speed machine but it is excellent fun, it captures the feel of the classic Tamiya buggies that have inspired it and does transport the driver to the dunes of Glamis or Pismo, or a long distance race down the Baja peninsula or the desert of Nevada.

My buggy is still mechanically stock, but the fenders have been removed and the side storage baskets have been cut off - these are integrated into the main chassis plate. The weird twin tip exhaust has been replaced with a section of stainless steel drinking straw and it's been stripped and rebuilt after applying the paint. Some adhesive vinyl panels made with custom designed plot paths added the finishing touch.
I can't wait to see more people's build based on this fantastic fun platform.

That looks a million times better than the scheme they produced! Nicely done. Nice sandbox shots, too. Aces, Mark!

Cheers Mark! I wish I'd been able to find some sheet material at work that was a bit bluer :-)

Thanks man. The WPL version is intensionally quite different to the civilian styling of its Pinecone 1612 brother. I particularly wanted to hold out for the WPL version with better drive train and electronics.

Great looking buggy. I was hoping for some alternative designs to appear for some inspiration. Thanks for sharing. 👍

Sorry only just seen this, no not at all. On one I used a cutting disk in a Dremel type rotary tool. On another I have cut along the edge several times lightly with a craft knife to gradually increase the depth of the cut.
