  • Mpumalanga Health MEC Sasekani Manzini has raised concerns over the rise of teenage pregnancies. Manzini was speaking at Tonga Hospital in Nkomazi, Mpumalanga, where she presented gifts to mothers who gave birth to babies on Christmas Day. Over 40 babies were born in the province. Free World Initiative founder and CEO Lebogang Motau is on Zoom to expand more on this scourge.

    Parents should take responsibility for educating their children and not leave it to the responsibility of teachers....how much more must teachers take on in their role as educators!

    Teenage pregnancy is a major concern in this country..there are no condoms in the country(it's a fact)..I raised that concern with the minister and the Gauteng MEC and there are no contraceptives in plethora, access to the minimal that is available in our clinics;it's a huge struggle, lack of Sexually and Reproductive health and rights education is another contributing factor.
    Perpetuity of Bad staff attitude towards young people, prevents kids and teenagers from going to the clinics...we need a comprehensive conversation around this matter as a society. Today as we speak there are new HIV infections affecting kids and teenagers which amounts to an upward of 1000 per weekend and it's a major concern. Those kids are equally exposed to STIs,HIV and to unplanned pregnancies and there's an Acute shortage of abortion pills in the country. Home based education, civic education and out doors programs and universal access to healthcare, should be the considerable interventions to some degree will assist to alleviate those social ills. Uncontrollable consumption of alcohol and drugs in our society is a thorny reality and the Perpetual gratuitous social media content, which bears blatant graphic material compounds the situation.
    We also need a strong synergy between government, business and civil society to breach the gap in the dichotomy between policy and practice.
    I am from Treatment Action Campaign in Gauteng.

      Abusing alcohol and drugs is one's own decision, blaming pregnancy on the lack of condoms is ridiculous, blame shifting will not help and makes matters worse, people need to take responsibility for their own actions, and parents should start teaching their children moral values, and they need to lead by example, blame shifting won't help to fix the situation.

    Only few parents are upset to see their teenagers having babies. They are happy to be called gogo and mkhulu. Is it not a problem of education ?

  • @christinemeyer7163
    @christinemeyer7163 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The Department of Education is part of the problem--Life Orientation --the subject--teach the children very graphically about all this--in stead of teaching them proper subjects/ skills to prepare for their careers. The Government should not dealing out children grants for every baby born-it should be stopped after no more than 2 babies.Condoms are dished out very often.

      I beg to differ. Problem starts at home, not school. Absent fathers, poverty and just general immorality are some of the biggest contributors not the education system. Charity begins at home

      @@Pagasus - Yes your right but the education system is part of the problem. Thomas Sowell has already shown that once sex education is introduced into schools in America teenage pregnancy's and venereal diseases went up.

    There's the problem right there. Government made the age of consent 12 and three years later they're asking why the high birth rate. I'm flabbergasted 🙆🏽‍♀️
    Now they talking about it starts in the home. When government legalized these things, teach the children about exploring their sexuality in the school curriculum. Setting parents up between a rock and a hard place

    This is an issue centred around education and socio-economic issues.
    We are placing a lot on these teenagers when we just speak of sex-talks and abstainance. We have to look at the parents and the style of parenting. You find that educated parents know how to inculcate the value system and societal norms in their children down to their toes as opposed to parents who aren't educated.
    I mean you look at how they walk, how they dress and knowing the difference between when to talk and when to listen. It's amazing!
    Even the attitude with regards to safety educated parents tend to have better awareness. They're always alarmed and have measures in place to deal with arising issues. Whereas you find that in poor areas anything goes. Probably because they have much worse to worry about.
    We're not talking how difficult it is for young people trying to further their studies and stay on a career path.
