"there's actually four notes on every line - did you know that?" "man it's hot in this studio" "shada kaka!" god knows what he's high on but I want it. that's right, I want a bass.
johnny long ....what pickups are on your Jazz bass ?...is it a real Fender Jazz ?.....did your P bass come with that Jazz p-up or did you add it ?.....would luv to hear that Jazz compared to your P Bass...happy playing
I like the wider string spacing of the p neck, and I think it looks better too. Jazz bass bodies or too offset or not offset enough. I haven’t decided which. A thin jazz master guitar shaped body with a p neck and p/j pickups would be really cool
So I came here to find out what bass to buy as my first bass. I’ve been playing trumpet 🎺 for 10 years. I think I prefer the P Bass because -better to play in a band //better sounding together with the other instruments -not so “in your face” as you said/ not so dominant -more of a classic “thump” sound But when you put them together as a PJ- I agree with you, that’s sounds killer !! but for me as a beginner I think I will go with a simple P-Bass. Your enthusiasm is contagious!! Rock on! 💜
And fundamentally basslines are focused on the lows, hence the P basses. but tonal versatility in slap bass, soloing or funk, would require brighter or more growly/aggressive bass tones, so that's where you need a bridge pickup, hence the J basses. also, if you dont have a p bass but you have a jazz bass, you can just use a neck pickup + no tone brightener to achieve a tone close to that of a p bass. so a jazz bass is also just as viable and hence i prefer that over p bass.
@@dandylion2837 Try out many different instruments. I think Spector and the Yamaha BB basses are great instruments even at the beginner level. Turn knobs, experiment, and have a lot of fun!
Hey @@Napalm6b ! Funny just yesterday I got my first Amp, a Hartke HD 15 . Thank you for your tip! Actually... I listend to 30 different basses on video with my eyes closed and found out -- I love Fedora !! Haha! Then I looked into my purse and found out -- I can’t afford Fedora ! :/ So, I bought a different, great sounding one = Fender, Squier P-Bass, Classic Vibe , 70s style . Most say the same line, 60s style sounds better, BUT I went for the 70’s just because the neck is thinner and I have relatively small hands, the neck is more like a guitar, and it suits me. So you see, that is a personal preference, as all hands are different. ✌🏼
@@dandylion2837 Congratulations!! can't go wrong with Fender, and modern manufacturing is so good I'm sure your Squire plays great. All the different options available now a days and different styles people bring to the bass are amazing. I have small hands and play prog rock with a pick lol. I love listening to high level funk players though. cheers!
That was actually enlightening. I just bought my 1st bass and I ended up going for thunderbird. Have you ever considered doing a structured video lesson series? Thanks for the video and greetings from Portugal.
I've always wondered what the real difference was between the jazz and the precision. thanks for putting me up on game. Oh, and all you haters just mad that this man can out play every damn one of you.
Well, I had to subscribe... anyone with this much exuberance and joy teaching and playing.... I will be watching a lot of your videos. Trying to resist buying my first bass guitar. I know nothing about them... but that low rumble moves me. Cheers, again, Brother.
I have both a Fender Jazz Plus and Fender Jazz Plus V Bass Guitar. They both are great sounding and playing basses. They are equipped with Fender Lace Pickups and a Kubicki Preamp, both are rare. Theses particular basses were only in production between 1990-1994, my 2 are 1992's. They did not go over well at the time, due to their deviation from the normal Fender Jazz Bass designs. I would really like to see you do a review of this model,be aware that they are really hard to find but if you should being a jazz lover lover, you to will be blown away by their sound, playability and feel. I don't know what it is, but I've had 3 basses (including my current go-to), and each pickup alone has always sounded a little different than an actual P or J on its own. I've always strongly preferred the blended tone on those bases to the tone of one single pickup.
I saw this two years ago for the first time when I was starting out and I just remembered how helpful this video was. I just saw it again for the first time in two years( a much better bassist now😂) and it still holds the same value and importance to me.
Dude, that really is a great tone. It comes over the mic great! The difference between P and both is astounding! I could watch you play all day. Subscribed!

shadda kaka is a lyric in the song brick house (Commodores). shake it down, shake it down now. shake it down, shadda kaka... It happens once about 2/3 through the song. Check it out. Probably got stuck in your head after hearing the song.
The reason for P-bass (P for precision) was that the neck now had frets creating the precise places for the notes versus a double bass neck which has no frets. Jazz basses came afterwards as improvements on the P which was the original electric bass with precisely placed frets on the neck recreating the same exact note every time without having to adjust like on a double bass.
I believe Fender should talk to Bootsy Collins about issuing a copy of his original P-Funk bass. It was a modified Precision bass with three jazz pickups and a strat style toggle. There's currently no information on what exactly the knobs do exactly but it seems like they'd set up like a strat as well. Just the idea of a triple jazz in a p-body with strat controls should be enough to catch Fender's interest. (Edit: The only way to find this bass is in an interview he had with Signed Media back in 2005 where he showed off his bass/guitar collection from his at the time 40 year career.)
Merci, that's an instructive video. I play P bass too and the sound is so loud and deep ! every time I'm playing jazz bass I fell that's the neck is to narrow you know. But I like the Pastorius sound too :). You're way to slap is very impressive. I discovered P bass with the Iron Maiden bassist, Steve Harris, who is one of my favorite bassist. Thanks for the show, have a good day !
Great playing and explanation with a hint of sense of humor! Great! Thanks for that, I play a 72 P-Bass with a slight modification, I added another P-bass pickup on the bridge position and EMG pick-ups, (a little too bright, but I will take the noise cancellation in exchange). My other bass is a custom made J-Bass with Warmoth wood, swamp ash body with redwood front cover and bubinga and ebony fingerboard neck which spits sound off the neck! It has a nice bright sound and when you kill the treble, you get a warm tone. Now I am planning a "solo" performance playing my own music with recordings by myself and I will need the different tones that the PJ-bass configuration gives me.
