Excellent review of a classic. I live in Denmark, Europe, and the PP and PPK were the issued service pistols in the police force up until the mid 1990s. The PP was carried by the uniformed officers, and the PPK by the detectives and chiefs. Both chambered in .32/7.65mm. It was replaced some twenty years ago by the H&K USP Compact 9mm.

That is interesting; the replacement for the PP and PPKs I mean.

So then it's not true that the PPK was the British Intelligence issue?

      @watchm0vies0nline 10 ปีที่แล้ว

Randy Johnson Unfortunatly no - one can actually confirm or deny what agents of the secret intelligence services of the UK used (since they are secretive) but its entirely possible that they were used at some point

The weight is very comforting in my hand. It helps with the recoil. At 25 yards it’s deadly.

I bought my Walther PPK/S in Germany around 35 years ago and it's never let me down.Only jamming issues were operator error and the accuracy is amazing. I shoot at 50 ft in the indoor range and can get a nice tight grouping. I love the double action, heavy trigger pull as it gives me just a little bit of extra confidence in carrying with one in the chamber. As a woman with smaller hands, I've never had an issue with slide bite. It's not a "novelty" it's awesome! You are a man with good taste.

My father in law purchased a Walther PPK/S for my mother in law over 15 years ago and has never been fired. He recently passed and my mother in law wants me to help her get it ready (it really needs to be broken in). As I am looking through videos for info on the PPK, I find the Yankee Marhsal!!! Love your channel.

The disassembly method alone is worth it. Guns that are a pain to clean are less likely to be shot at the range. This is great!

I agree 100% it is VERY underrated. The PPK is one of the most accurate hundguns i've fired with small sights and short sight radius. Even with my old, crappy eyesight it was VERY accurate.

  • @texxmexx8176

If you like the Walther .380, you would probably also like the Polish P-64 in 9x18 Makarov. Same basic design, all steel, slightly more powerful cartridge, same capacity (6+1). A bit more kick, can be uncomfortable to shoot for extended periods, but a great self-defense carry gun. Stout double-action trigger, but only the first shot is going to be DA anyway--unless you cock the hammer for the first shot too. The fixed-barrel design is one reason for the unexpectedly good accuracy I think. And they probably cost about half of what a Walther does. Not to one-up, but if the Walther PPK is underrated, the P-64 is spectacularly underrated--IMO. Love your reviews.

I know it's a five-year-old video, but I really like the location of the magazine release on my PPK. In fact, the reason I recently bought a PPS over a Glock 43 is because the mag button is closer to where it was on my old PPK.

Glad you mentioned the sights. I have always questioned the need for elaborate sights on a handgun specialising in close up shooting, against burglars or muggers, for instance. All too often I see sights criticised for being too small, and yet I watch the same gun being used against targets barely six feet away! And sights can snag in some holsters,so the smaller the better.

I have one of those older Interarms PPK/S pistols. The only problems I've ever encountered with it comes from age more than anything else. Springs get weak after decades of use. Was starting to have FTF problems with one of the OEM magazines. Discovered that the follower spring had compressed over the years, and didn't bring the cartridge up to the correct attitude to be cleanly stripped off by the closing slide. A new follower spring cured that problem. Also had to have the magazine release button spring replaced when it didn't fully engage the magazine, allowing it slide down during operation. That was an easy fix also. With a leather shoulder holster rig, I could carry my Walther inconspicuously, and have two spare magazines under the other arm for reloads. That gave me 22 rounds in an easy to carry concealable package.

    • @geoffedwards-tb4kp
      @geoffedwards-tb4kp 6 ปีที่แล้ว

partriarch just make sure you unload clip when storing overwise prone to jamming because spring loses tension, same with most semi auto pistols.can guarantee if you store it loaded it will let you possibly let you down when needed.Better to be safe than sorry.Apaet from that belting little gun, reliable, good stopper accurate and easy to conceal,I have small hands so perfect for me,have a little trouble with larger pistols such as Herrera 92f,desert eagle etc unless I customise grip so Walther great for me or ladies.

I held a PPK in my hand today. When you have the magazine finger extension it feels like a full sized gun! I even held it without the finger extension and could get my pinky on the grip about half way. This is the gun I'm gonna get. Either the PPK or the PPK/S.

I carry the walther PPK/S and i love it, with the .380 ACP I never worry about a through and through shot and hitting someone/something i didn't intend to hit and it is small enough to conceal just about anywhere i put it. Thanks for the video :)

Great review. Got my Walther PPK/S at Christmas and have put over 200 rounds through it and I just love it. Excellent gun! I'm actually shooting better with this pistol at 25 yds. than with my S&W 9mm. This Walther has quickly become my favorite gun.

To me, the Walther PPK is the 1911 of true concealed carry pistols. It’s not the smallest or lightest. It also doesn’t hold very many rounds for its size. What it does is strike a perfect balance between size and accuracy.

I own an Interarms PPK/s .380 and it is a fine gun. Never had a recall, so not sure what “problems” your referring to, which I can’t say the same about your S&W. I have put over 1000 rounds through it without a malfunction. I would say it is adequate in the summer when people are not wearing heavy clothing. I agree with all your other comments on accuracy, weight and the decocker.

  • @partriarch

Have owned a PPK/S for almost 30 years. Had it long enough to wear out the follower spring in one magazine. Had to make some repairs to it, such as replacement of the "loaded chamber pin" spring, which broke. Mine is an old "Interarms" pistol originally made under license in Georgia, USA. Have never had a failure to feed with any ammo until the mag follower spring wore out. I still use it from time to time instead of the Springfield EMP or the Beretta Nano. I like it..

Bersa makes a PPK copy that is both cheaper and lighter. It is the same design as the PPK. I have a Bersa Thunder 380 Plus that holds 15 rounds of 380. I had a jam toward the beginning, but I polished the feed ramp with my Dremel tool and it has been flawless ever since.

FEG makes a PPK knock-off that is quite good too. I had one in .380, paid like $149 for it used. Was an excellent shooter, never a malfunction of any kind and I shot 1000's of rounds through it. Now I have another one in 9mm Makarov, bought it for about $189 brand new and again...excellent shooter, not a problem with it at all.

If you want an extra finger on the grip, step up to the PPK/S. It has an extended seven round magazine with a comfortable three finger hold. I would never part with mine. Accurate as hell, and after firing over 800 rounds at the range, I never experienced a misfire. As with any firearm, maintenance is the key.

  • @michaelhatfield3430

Great review. I agree about it being and under-rated handgun. I have owned a few PP,PPK and PPK/S over the years and a PP Super which I regret letting go. At the moment I have a S&W made Walther PPK/S and I Love it. It fits my hand well, balances and points naturally and shoots very accurately, especially for a pocket size pistol. With modern defensive ammunition it is effective as a CCW. When I carry it I bring 2 extra mags and/or a Ruger SP101 .327Magnum. But I have never felt under gunned with 8rnds of .380acp in the gun and 2 7rnd mags. as long as I put my rounds where they need to go it should serve me well if needed. I'll like it more when my Lazergrips arrive.

I personally do not think the pistol is underrated. Anyone who knows carry guns should know that this one is probably one of the best choices out there. It may be a little heavier but it is scary accurate for a short-barreled gun and is extremely well made to very tight tolerances. I just wish I could merge my P238's Siglite sights on this gun. Then it would literally have it all.

Blowbacks can be quite accurate since there are fewer variables contributing to the consistency of the lockup. I sold guns in a large shop from 93 to 95 before doing 20 yrs of LE. The main drawback to the PPK series is slide manipulation. The recoil spring is necessarily pretty strong, so it is often less than optimal for those with less hand strength, such as women, small statured people etc. Slide bite was an issue; glad to see S&W has addressed that. The sights in the Interarms era could have been better, and the factory red paint didn't help much. All that said, it is a good pistol. Flat and easy to conceal. A few oz of extra weight is often a good thing. Mine is an Interarms PPK/S, and i have no complaints. I don't carry a 380 for serious purposes, and this is my only 380, maybe because i too am a James Bond fan. So for me it is just a fun gun and part of my reference library. Good video

      @RedEyePergo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

If you cant hit with a 9mm you dont need to own a gun . PPK is asmall blowback gun so felt recoil in 380 is probably no lighter than a full size modern 9mm but oviously with much less stopping power

I have a WWII era PPK that was still packed with cosmoline when I got it back in the late 60's. The original owner had picked it up in Africa during the war and had no idea how to break it down for cleaning, so it lived in a drawer. The clip was still loaded with 7.65mm's with mostly cracked cases. I cleaned it up for him and he told me to keep it (Thank you, R.V.!). I've carried it for years, but now that I'm retired and traveling more, I am going to move up to either a .380 or 9mm. Thanks for an excellent review!

In Fleming's first Bond book, Casino Royale, Bond carried a Beretta M418, a semi auto, 6.35 mm (.25 ACP), probably because Ian Fleming was issued one during WWII. Flemming supposedly got a letter from a Bond fan who was into guns who called the Beretta a lady's gun with no stopping power and suggested several alternatives, including the now famous PPK.

Nice review & thanks for sharing your thoughts on this great firearm. I also carry the PPK mine is also from S&W. But a couple of items to share. Not all S&W models were subject to the decocker recall. I have an email from S&W confirming mine was not part of the serial #s for recall. If yours was, showing the "dimple" behind the hammer would have helped others with your information. Two main items that S&W added to Walther's overall design were the feeding ramp, better design & larger "beaver tail".(Tang) I reload for mine & after 1K+ reloads no problems at all. Also the decocker when used, you might want to lower the hammer with your thumb when using the decocker...no need to slam the hammer home. Also, the S&W allowed Ruger to make the frames. The PPK/s came about only because of the 1968 Gun Control Act which indicated the PPK was to small to continue importing PPK, thus the PPK/S was made & just a little larger. Thanks for your review. At 15:03 am sure you did not mean PPK/S

Yes the PPK and PPK/S in .380 is extremely underrated. It's probably the quintessential .380 and was the most accurate for many many years.... until Sig made the P238 (even the P232 gave the PPK a run for its money, but in my opinion the P238 is the only .380 to surpass the PPK as THE gun to have in this calibur.) I am relatively new to the scene, but almost all the research I have done has been on this very topic.

Glad to see someone review the PPK. I have carried a 7.65 Browning caliber PPK for going on 6 years now. The DA/ SA trigger is great. I can keep a round chambered and then use the safety as a de-cocker as mentioned. If you need it, you just pull the trigger and it will fire the first round in double action mode. No need to rack the first round. The little gun is very accurate. When I first got mine, I never expected accuracy out to 25 yards. Great carry gun. Thanks for the video.

I had a stainless Walther PPK/s for several years some time ago. At the time, I favored the handsome, classic design and sexy panache. Eventually, some concerns led me to let it go as a less than ideal carry/defense gun. The .380 is not the best defense round. I found it difficult to shoot accurately, partly due to the harsh recoil of the blowback design. The hammer bit the web of my shooting hand. Also, for some reason, hollow point ammo tended to cause the mag to release spontaneously. Definitely not good for a defense gun. It would be an interesting gun to have in a collection, but not to my liking as a carry gun.

I would recommend a larger mid-size or full size pistol for someone who is new to handguns....reason being...they are easier to shoot and to master. They are better guns...the drawback is that they are larger and harder to conceal.

Alexn is correct, if you're a first-time pistol buying you should consider a basic mid-sized 9 mm semi-auto before you move onto a PPK, 1911, etc. My first gun was the Ruger P95 which is a great starter gun, and then I moved onto the PPK/S. I love both guns and highly recommend them both.

I carried an original PPKS for quite a while. Had to have a gunsmith work the slide to get rid of the edge that kept cutting me. I found it to hate some ammo and love others. The extractor broke twice. It was heavy for it's size and when I traded up I never looked back. I know some people love the image. I just like stuff that works. These S&W ppk's seem like a throw back. As I said, there's much better designs out there. It's just you don't see them in the movies.

Had failure to ejects with two, older, after-market, no name magazines with pinky extension. Hi, Ihave a PPK in .32 auto caliber (7+1), that one was made by manurhin (France) after WWII, manufacterd in 1958, and I still have the box, manfacturer's gun test, and all plastics that wrap the pistol on that time. That's an amazing pistol, reliable, accurate, and no one flaws (including hollow points). The concealment is perfect, you can put where you want. However, in real situation, the light caliber could not stop the agression with a single round. However, she makes a lot of noise when fires, that seems like a higher caliber. In fact, I love this gun, altough time , she still reliable and accurate for self defense. Thanks for the wonderful review.

When the Ky state Police changed from wheel handguns to autos in the 90s . They went with the 10mm Smith as the primary and the walter PPK as a ankle gun. The Walthers shot well the only issue was when you had a malfunction, you had to total break down the weapon. Another problem in the 90's was the company was having issues and we had part issues with it. We had a unit disarmed with his 10mm the unit went to his ankle Walters and dropped the bad gun. The .380 did the trick. Now they carry only Glocks in the 40. Good video and the Walther is a fine weapon.

I have extra large hands and have been training muscle memory so I can grip the weapon and not get bit when the slide racks. Anyways, great video. It was very informative.

I had the PPKS (slightly longer grip & barrel) I loved it & regret selling it. If you are looking for a .380 I would highly recommend it. Mine was the older Interarms which has the reputation of being the lower quality PPK & I had no problems whatsoever. The new ones are even better. It's heavier than some guns the same size but still very manageable. All in all I think it's hard to beat for a .380

As far as the safety might want to check and see if it is a safety transfer bar to keep the gun from firing if you drop it on the hammer with one in the chamber.

I don't see any comments on reliability. I've heard several negative comments at gun shows. I kept having jams and finally took it to a gunsmith. (Mine was a S&W contract made) All American Gunsmith in Columbus, GA changed the recoil spring both solving the loading problem and making it easier to jack the slide back. Now it is great and my summer EDC.

I decided to buy a SIG P230 SL instead for CC .380. I think it is a slightly better design, in stainless steel, with internal safety, external decocker only, European mag release, and takedown lever. But even better is the HK Model 4 because of its multiple caliber options, although the frame is alloy instead of steel, making it lighter and smaller.

Proud owner of a PPK in .380. I've owned it for nearly 20 years!
    A Few gripes:
1: I wish the sites were adjustable.
2: The Ejector is prone to breaking. Two replaced so far.
3: Parts of the receiver are difficult to clean properly.
4: New magazines are extremely expensive.
5: It's so much fun to shoot that buying more ammo is very costly.

For conceal carry I love this gun but also love the Beretta .32 Tomcat. About the same amount of power for caliber but the Beretta has the pop up barrel that makes racking the slide un-necessary. That gives it a slight advantage for clearing it out in a much safer method. I have to agree with you on this newer Walther. The little duck bill in the back does a great job for preventing slide bite and yes, being all steel, it is heavier than a polymer but if your out of ammo, you can still pistol whip the shit out of someone. Same with the Beretta. All steel. I own both and love them equally.

11/21/2017 I bought a used S&W Walther PPK. Stainless Steel with wrap around walnut grips made in Houlton ME. Almost exactly like the one Dave shows us here. I bought mine used for $600. It is everything YM says it is. I had a hard time with the first double action trigger pull. I'm 5'6" with small hands and that first double action pull is difficult for my hand. I need a longer index finger to grab it and keep the beaver tail in the web of my hand. In order to get a solid double action pull, I have to change my grip and that causes the extended beaver tail to hit my rear thumb knuckle. I've since adjusted to it (because I love it). If you're like me, just be advised.

    Great video.
I bought a Walther blue steel PPK 9mm kurtz (short), same as a .380, in 1967 for $75. After WWII when Germany wan't allowed to make firearms so Walther licensed their guns to companies in France. Mine was made in Germany. I've been carrying and shooting it ever since. It's accurate, easy to shoot, clean and maintain and easy to carry concealed. No one would claim a .380 is as powerful as larger caliber rounds and you shouldn't shoot +P rounds, at least in imported PPKs per Walther. Bullet placement is the name of the game for this calibre.
The PPK was banned from import into the US by the Gun Control Act of 1968 because it's too small for "sporting purposes". Walther got around this ban by making the grip frame slightly larger and called it the PPK/S. Walther says the /S is for Sport. A lot of people say it stands for Stupid because the PPK/S is only slightly larger than the PPK. If you buy a PPK or PPK/S in the US, the odds are good that it was made Interarms or later Smith & Wesson. I haven't shot either.
Side note: PPKs aren't on the approved list for California. You can own one, bring one into the state if you register it but you can't sell or give it away in California, unless you are turning it into the police to be destroyed. Each manufacture of each pistol on the approved list had to send California all the handguns they want to sell there for the state to test for "safety". It gets a little screwy. Once a gun is on the approved list it will "fall off" after a year or so unless the gun manufactures keep sending their guns to test. It gets screwy. A Ruger MK III with black grips is on the approved list but not one with brown grips. I suppose Ruger didn't send California one with brown grips to test, possibly thinking that except for the grip color, it's exactly the same gun. Wrong thinking for for California, a state that sets the benchmark for wrong thinking.

I have since found out that you can give it away or sell it as long as it's a private party sale and go through a person with a FFL. You can' t buy a new one in Peoples Republic of Kalifornia but then they aren't allowed to import them here and doubtful you'll be able to find a pre 1968 new PPK.

+Longshotrecon Firstly, weakness of .32 ACP is exagerated. Secondly, due to intrinsic precision and light recoil of Walther PPK I can put 7 bullets from my .32 PPK into a 1.5-2 inch circle from 7-8 meters in a bit over one second. And due to it's size and natural pointability I can make the first shot about one second faster than from my Beretta 92. In my eyes it's HUGE advantage...
