    Thanks! Just bought a 1730HD with a bad transmission, but I figured it was something else (impeller was bent and jammed). Working through all the issues with it and hope it is something so simple!

      Thanks for the comment hotgore.
      Yes let's hope it is something as simple as possibly just the pulley.

    I bought a B & S 1224 in 2021. these models normally have a 208 cc engine. the option had a 250 cc. engine. Upon running it in 6 inch powder, it broke the auger shear pins and I had to shovel my drive. (I am currently 76) The MTD people provided me with stronger pins. This year the friction drive started to slip. I was told to replace the friction wheel. You can't buy the friction wheel by itself. (wheels are usually $25) You need the whole assembly - $170 with taxes and shipping to my door. The old friction wheel was worn down by 0.005 inches! The problem is that the spring at the end of the engagement cable is too weak. I doubled the spring up and it now works just fine. I am just grateful not to be saddled with plastic gears. When I park this one beside the American Rambler in the back 40, this summer, I will be looking at a Honda.

      Hi Gerald,
      Yah, the B&S snowblowers are a poor excuse for a snowblower. I haven't heard too many good things about them.
      When your looking for a new snowblower, be sure to inquire what type of transmission and drive system is in it.
      Allot of manufacturers are using plastic parts in allot of area's on all types of equipment.
      Best of luck, and thanks for the comment.

    How do you push these snowblowers around when not running? If you try when its in gear will it ruin your teansmission?

    Awesome video, thanks very highly for the info! I have since taken the first pulley off to check the drive pully, the only difference I see is that when I am turning the drive pully , it is moving the crank shift, where in your video it does not. This leads me to believe that it's my transmission...any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

      Hi Jonathan,
      It sounds like it could be your transmission that is gone.
      But you should try running it with the belt cover off. Just to see if the pulley is indeed turning with the engine. As well you will be able to see if the belt is operating properly.
      Hopefully yours is an easy fix like the one in the video. Depending on the age of your snowblower, I would reach out to the manufacturer for some kind of coverage.
      All the best and thank you for watching.

    I have the 1227 and its garbage. Hits a 2 inch clump of wet snow and the wheels stop, you'd think they would just travel over it, but nope, this was not the issue and I can't see anything out of place.

      Thanks for the comment.
      If the pulley is spinning as a complete piece, then chances are if you have the sealed plastic transmission. Then the gears inside could be stripped.
      For the unit I was working on in the video, the plastic section of the pulley became dislodged from the metal section of the pulley. It would would allow the snowblower to move a little but then stop with any small amount of resistance.
      If you have the same style pulley as the unit in the video, I would double check the pulley.
      The only way I noticed it being the pulley, was I removed the belt cover and walked beside the snowblower as it was moving to see where the problem was.
      Not sure if this is explained in a way that makes sense, but I hope you figure it out.

      I removed the transmission cover and the auger belt was really loose, so I adjusted the tensioner all the way, there was still slop on that belt(had to adjust that cable also). While I had the cover off I gave the drive belta tug and it held firm so I didn't give it a closer look.I haven't checked the friction wheel yet, but the machine is 1 year old and used less than 10 times. So I guess that's my next move.@@missionrepairable

    Great video,,, I was looking all over too see how to remove the drive belt when I found this. I had been thinking my transmission was at fault. I'll inspect this part much closer now.
    My machine will move but starts to stop moving once it get's heated up ? I'll give it a push or shift up a few gears than it moves so im wondering if this part is the issue vs the transmission?
    You mentioned that the clutch pulley should not turn when the machine is off?

      Hi Curti 63,
      Thanks for watching and for your comment.
      I am trying to remember about the drive pulley not being able to turn when the engine is off. For sure you shouldn't be able to turn it as freely as I did in the video. I would think if you were to turn the pulley, it should turn the engine over as well. I should have made a point of trying that in the video when the new pulley was installed. I guess that was my second video, beginners fault I guess. Sorry.
      I hope it is a simple fix for your blower, as this was. I remember my customer was really happy he did't need to replace the transmission.
      All the best and again thanks for watching, any questions I will do my best to reply as soon as I can.

      @@missionrepairable Good morning, I took the machine & transmission apart. Teardown found, the transmission (input) pulley is melted between the sheaves and the belt has a lot of stretch compared to the new one. The driven (engine) pulley is ok. Had I just looked at the belt and input pulley I would have just changed those and hoped for the best . Oh also the bolt holding the input pulley on is reverse thread.
      Considering the transmissions reputation, I took the trans apart and found one gear has a lot of wear on it im not sure this trans is rebuildable given that as no service parts are available. I ordered another trans and am waiting for it. One thing I've found is parts are tuff to get as they discontinued that transmission.
      I'm thinking of selling mine given that and finding a friction wheel model once it's up and running.
      I did find a link to the makers web site if you'd like to take a look they show a limited diagram of that trans. They call it a HR300P Thanks for your post and getting back to me.

      Good morning Curti 63,
      Darn, I was hoping you would not need to replace the transmission. Thanks for the link, much appreciated.
      The guy that owned the snowblower in the video sold his right away, once it was fixed. He was not impressed that it had a plastic transmission. I would imagine pretty much all the people that own these type snowblowers don't even know they have that type of transmission.
      All the best with your new snowblower, and thanks again for finding my video.
      I forgot to ask if it was a hard video to find, and if there is perhaps a word or phrase I could use to make it easier to find?

      @@missionrepairable Hello hope you had a good weekend, I was using "Craftsman C950" in my search. I dropped that and am not sure which words i was using when I came across your video, I'm thinking "Craftsman" or "Craftsman belt change" might get more people to the video.
      On another note, the transmission I ordered from Amazon is delayed and I'm hoping it comes as the price for the other tranny's I found online are in the $550-$800 range much more than I got mine for. There are no more to source on Amazon thus far so my fingers are crossed.
      I found upon teardown my Input (driven) pulley had melted plastic between the sheaves. But the engine pulley is ok. From what little service information i found General transmission recommends changing both pulleys and the belt when melted plastic is found,I can source both pulleys online and have the new belts.
      I might have replaced those parts and left it at that but upon tranny teardown I found one large gear ( i can't name without a service manual) Is showing signs of wear. Also I found my trans had very little oil left in it, the case is wet with oil and I've had no luck finding where it's seeping from. I know it's been seeping for some time as i've seen it in the snow and the inside body of the snowblower is oil wet.
      Sooooo,,,, looks like a tranny is the way for this unit and than down the road it goes. Any recommendations on what brand to buy? Had I known about this trans I would have passed on the machine.

      Hi Gordon,
      Not exactly sure which cap screw you are referring to. Not sure if your talking about the two bolts between the drive wheels and the auger housing you remove to split the housing?
      Perhaps you could send me a picture pointing to the bolt your trying to remove?
      Thanks

    I have exactly the same B&S snowblower which I bought in 2014 and I am starting to have speed and direction problems. My reverse only works when I pull the lever to Reverse 2 and hold it down. Forward speeds seem to operate on 2 to 3 speeds regardless which speed it put the lever in. For example, the speed is the same in 1 - 3 speed and can't move the lever to speed 6. Does it look like a transmission problem?

    • @missionrepairable
      @missionrepairable  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jerry,
      Hard to say without actually seeing the problem first hand. It does sound like a transmission issue.
      I guess remove the belt cover and check the the drive pulley to see if it is worn out like in the video.
      With the cover off, engage the drive to see if the pulley is slipping or if it's turning as it should with the engine.
      Hope that makes sense and is able to help you.
      Thanks for the comment and for your viewing.
      Stay safe and take care.

    My wheels will turn when I lift them off of the ground, then not at all under load… would you think this is my issue?

    • @missionrepairable
      @missionrepairable  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not necessarily. Does your snowblower have one of these plastic transmissions? Or is it a friction wheel drive system?
      The best way to check is to take the belt cover off.
      See if the drive pulley and belt is turning when you engage the drive. If the pulley and belt stop turning when the drive is engaged then it's the pulley.
      But it's hard to diagnose just by description. Hopefully it is the pulley and not the transmission.

      @@missionrepairable hey man I have a relatively new snowblower that won't keep its speed on the dial any ideas as to what it could be?

    • @missionrepairable
      @missionrepairable  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the type of drive system you have on your snowblower.
      Most snowblowers are a friction wheel drive system, or a sealed transmission like the one in my video.
      Could be the belt needs to be adjusted or even the cables to engage the drive system.

    Plastic, Really? It's bad enough they started with the plastic chutes and some with plastic control handles that break, but plastic pulleys and transmissions don't belong on snowblowers, period.

    • @missionrepairable
      @missionrepairable  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi David, yes I agree completely. Especially on the big so called heavy duty snowblowers like in the video.
      I use to see the plastic transmissions on the small 18 inch and 22 inch snowblowers. But more and more I see them in the bigger snowblowers.
      Thanks for the comment.
