    "I've never been this cold, The fire's gravity compels.
    Like planets cling to Sol. I feel my orbit start to fail.
    Like moths to flame I come, Too close and all my oaths are burned
    As stars begin to run. All my accusers take their turn
    And calling curses down, From my lips lies like poison spill
    And then that awful sound, The sound of prophecy fulfilled
    And then I met your eyes, And I remember everything
    And something in my dies, The night that I betrayed my King"
    Probably, my favorite lyrical run in all of music.

    I love Thrice and I am not a Christian, and they don't call themselves a Christian band. I think that is why they are much more relatable and accessible to the larger audience. As such their lyrics have opened my mind a bit to different subjects just by being humans and making great music with great stories and messages.

    Thrice hits you because it’s art. Their songs are stories. It’s showing instead of telling. As a Creative Writing professor, Dustin’s lyrics have always drawn me in. I’ve actually taught them in class.

    Awesome reaction! This one is definitely one of my favorites.
    Personally, I can relate to Peter as I grew up Catholic, went agnostic, then hard atheist, then back to agnostic, and now something approaching Universalist, but despite the sort of gnosis I've grown into I still find myself getting absorbed in the material illusion sometimes. I don't think anyone lives above the wavering of faith but it feels sometimes that I'm in an absolute union with something greater than all of this and then the next day it's like I've been cast into a nihilistic void of meaninglessness and really all we're doing is waiting for complete annihilation. It's like I've approached the door and seeing the door I trusted there was something on the other side but since I've never knocked and it was never opened I begin to believe the door was never a door at all. Maybe I'll outgrow the doubt as I've grown out of the refusal but it still wears on the image I have before God, I feel, so Peter's betrayal appears as a mirror to me.
    Thanks again! I can't wait for more! Much love and God bless.

      I’ve been wondering about you Ayo, what your story is, Thanks for sharing! I’ve been all over the map myself. Born into a home where drugs and violence were common, a few years later my parents found God. So for close to 15 years I went to church, read my Bible, stayed faithful (as best a teen could at least), after losing my grandmother I started to question things, went the agnostic route, then after deployment I found myself at odds with faith in general. 8 years beyond that, to today, I’ve found myself not fitting into any camps anymore. It feels lonely at times, because I don’t know where I belong. Except here, I’ve fallen in love with the commentary that takes place on both this channel and middle America. I may not always agree, but I love the conversation. I’d like to see a two parter from Vin and Sori covering “The melting point of wax” and “Daedalus”.

      @@BakerStreetShootout I feel you. I appreciate you sharing your story and thank you for your service, brother.
      My life wasn't all too crazy. I lost my faith really early on by no particular event, I just had questions no one of the faith could or would answer, so I doubted it then rejected it. Fatherless, poor, dropped out (informally) at 13. Since then, I've mostly lived on wires chasing shadows; reading, listening and arguing about religion and politics. Of course, being a young teenager, I was prime for materialistic demoralization so I bought into many of the postmodern thought-hazards that have been floating around, especially these days. Eventually, the more I learned about how the world works the less materialism made sense to me in total, the systems work but there must be a system above these systems that unifies the fragments we think we understand. I realized I must be blind and after heavy psychedelic "experimentation," I can assure you that we were all born blind. There's no all-encompassing answer to find before we return home so, even from an entirely pragmatic mindset, living is an exercise of faith.
      I relate to not fitting into any camps, I reluctantly label myself as a Universalist but my thoughts are rarely on the same page as anyone I talk to about it. The world is alien to me; not sure how to connect with others on a meaningful level, not sure what I was meant to do with the hands I was given. Now, it feels a bit hopeless as there's rarely anyone to connect with and really nothing to do as this lockdown is happening. It's good to hear that I'm not alone in the aloneness, though. I mean, it's not good that we're both alone but you get my meaning.
      Daedalus and Melting Point are coming up in a few days, actually, they'll be two separate videos but listened to back to back. I should have added Stare At The Sun now that I think of it... Oh well, too late now lol.

    Thrice is one of my favorite bands, and honestly, I'm not at all religious, but songs like this hit me really hard. There's so much meaning and vulnerability and honesty, and it's quite moving. Thrice is such an incredible band, there's always been that level of depth from them, be it their early work or their most recent work. I find it to be unmatched by most other bands, they're really unlike any other.
    On a sort of tangent, Seether did an excellent cover of Thrice's "Black Honey". It's worth checking out whether or not you do a reaction to it.

  • @dustofnations
    @dustofnations 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    While Dustin's faith is definitely injected to many of the songs on Vheissu and albums after, you need to consider the classical works that play lots on influence too. Think back to The Illusion of Safety, where we see references in songs like A Subtle Dagger, Under A Killing Moon, and even more on-the-nose references like The Red Death. Fast-forward and we get references to works like Macbeth, the story of Daedalus (twice in the entire body of work, for those not paying attention). So what's my point?
    I think while the Christian influence is there, it'd be presumptuous to call Thrice a Christian band.
    Also, just for a Kudos bar, don't forget we've even gotten a few DBZ references too because we were ALL tuned into Toonami during those afternoons (omg) over 20 years ago 😬

  • @bryanf1091
    @bryanf1091 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    They finally did it! This is what I've been waiting for. Hell yea! Thanks Ayo! I think every Thrice fan here was waiting for 6:08. Such a powerful part in such a powerful song.
    Thrice was kind of the opposite of the scene they were coming from. Back then, it was so easy to label yourself "Christian" as a post-hardcore band, and get a huge following. Thrice, while having massively Christian influences never once considered themselves a Christian band.
    Another fun fact, here are the lyrics to the bridge of this song, that Dustin cut from the actual release;
    "Though others fall away, I know I never will
    .
    I’ve stood by you before, I’m standing by you still.
    But if you’ll not permit my sword to speak, then what am I to do?
    I feel the shadows drain my courage, but in them I still follow you."
    I think it was awesome you guys picked up on the "but if you'll not permit my sword to speak" aspect of Peter.
