I mean, these are so cheap, and feel just as solid as a GBA.
I love the MIYOO a lot, it's no secret but I'm totally down to try something a little bigger or diffrent.
This is truly the golden age of portable gaming!! Never have we as consumers had so much choice and at such quality!

Really appreciate the in depth review covering the features and what it's capable of. Just bought mine today, so very anxious and hyped to get it, and start plugging away hours into classic RPGs to relive my youth. I'm 42, and I've been playing RPGs since the launch of Zelda on NES.
I got mine ordered about a week ago from keepretro and they said because of the Chinese new year holiday that it wont ship until February 15th. Who'd u order from if you don't mind my asking? I'm just trying to find out which outlet has the best turnaround time for getting the RG35XX quickest.
This awesome person named Black Seraph was able to load retro arch into the systems, its free and simple to install so I highly recommend putting it on your rg35xx if you want more settings to tinker with
i like how simple it is. once a CFW gets release, i would totally get one of these.

@JHRM hence why i said i would buy when a proper one comes out. i'm not choosing.
Current cfw with RetroArch has some issues of its own - it often crashes and the performance seems worse than the ofw.
There was an update to the ofw, which added a couple of scaling options, handling multidisc games etc.
I'm 49 yrs old.
This is the future for me. If you had told 17yr old me in 1992, that I'd be able to play every game I grew up with at home, in the arcade and all the games I missed out on for less than $100 on a portable device..... I'd of thought you were crazy.

far from happening. they know it will eventually get hacked. and like the other guy said, they're still using the classic games to cash in on their online services.
Just buy something similar to this. Load it with only 20 Gameboy games and there you have it.
Or buy an OG GameBoy and put in an Flash cart.
$60? That's is crazy cheap for a backlit GBA / SNES with a beautiful screen.
The cramped controls kills me, something like the ANBERNIC RG353P without analog sticks at $60 would be a buy for me.

This is what we needed, a true competitor for the Mayo Mini
I wanted a pocket sized handheld for PS1 and SNES RPGs. I tried to get a Miyoo but was never able to find them available at a decent price. I heard from several people that the Miyoo Mini likes to break if you drop it. I'm super clumsy have big hands, and work on a concrete floor all day, so I ended up grabbing the 35XX.
I simply ordered it for the rpgs as well. When I was younger I used to download a lot of emulators and Ron’s. Nowadays I feel like it’s gotten more difficult. That or my cpu skills have fallen off
@redgear4566 this was a great choice for older rpgs. I've played about 20% of chrono trigger since I upgraded the OS.
@@Surai00 classic. Hopefully you’ll be able to play chrono cross (ps1) on it as well. Storylines actually connect. Any forums or websites that you recommend for me when it comes to Roms and emulators? I also have an arcade stick that I used to use for mame on my laptop from long ago. The websites that I use to use have been sued/ banned.

I've been wanting to get started with emulation and handheld gaming as I have pretty much zero experience with emulations.
So for this price seems like a perfect way for me to dip my toes in and get started
Just ordered one very excited for this.
I just received mine yesterday. The form factor feels great. Sadly, I think the bar was really low on this one compared to the miyoo mini.
Pros:
* The speaker is decently loud
* The screen seems decent, bright & vivid
*It’s definitely pocketable, albeit not as much as the Miyoo Mini
* The purple is gorgeous
And now for the cons:
* The custom software is woefully inept, if you buy this you’ll join the ranks of those praying for custom Linux based firmware.
* The most egregious flaw: The renderer no matter what setting you choose looks like utter Sheeit. Trash. Poo in a tuxedo. I was so saddened by this.
* The performance of some emulation is fine, but most are slow Andy choppy, like PC Engine games have tons of frame drops and stutter. WHAT?!
* THe usb-c port is finicky about charging source like you can’t just take your MacBook Pro cable and charge it (to be fair the miyoo mini v1 is also finicky here - but the Retroid pocket 3 being android based works as expected)
Bottom Line:
I’ll keep mine in hopes that software updates and custom firmwares will alleviate most of my issues, but If i had to do it all again, I’d just cop a miyoo mini and hold out a while longer for this to get better software, or wait two weeks for a dozen other competitors and see if they have their heads on straight. Great review as always tho!
Update - the best setting for the graphics are “fast”, it’s playable and probably worth 40 bucks, but if you’re used to the gorgeous screen of the miyoo mini and how things rendered there this will disappoint with current firmware.

I tried a lot JRPG PS1 games and I would have to say most of the popular 3D ones will not run full speed. A lot of them struggle around 20-30 fps in crowded areas. Final Fantasy 7 has been playable for the most part but there's some slow downs here and there. I would stick with sprite based RPGs if you are looking to play PS1 rpgs.

I think the only reason you'd get this over the Miyoo Mini or the Anbernic RG280V is because of the ergonomics. But the only reason I like these dedicated handhelds is if they are small, otherwise I prefer to use my phone and a telescopic controller.

I grew up with the late70's, early 80's arcade. Does this handheld have all those? If not, what should I be looking for?
That is great for the price haha. I think I might stick with the RG351P though since that one has analogue sticks on them and I like the form factor better.

It's a pretty nice form factor. I was stunned though when I found out that you can dual boot the RG353P between Android and Linux! That had me sold!

I got the RG35xx last week and installed Garlic OS which makes it much better.
However, I wish that it was taller. With my big hands, it feels somewhat awkward to hold. I have concluded that handhelds, especially vertical ones, are hard to control accurately. I think that a horizontal portable game system would work much better.

@@dcarpenter85 yes perhaps 😉 There’s already a direct boot to Retroarch possible but it’s not really awesome. Let see what will happen in next months but I think that you have to buy a device for what it does and not for what it could do one day 😉

I'd recommend the Min UI front end, fixes a lot of the issues with the stock albeit it's very simple in design.

If you mean vertical styled ones I guess a powkiddy rgb20s or anbernics 351v or 353v but those are bigger. 353v is the closest on size to this one. Not as cheap though but still under the $100 mark.

I would love to buy Miyoo Mini but it's a nightmare to find it in stock, I hope that 35xx make the market more balanced.
And yeah, this OS just sucks, they should use community made OS out of the box, something more or less like Powkiddy did with RGB20s which IIRC uses a modified ArkOS.
But anyway, it has a pretty good performance for the price point.
Yep Miyoo's are unobtainable from reputable sellers.
You can have it everyday from the official seller. Just be there at the right time.

How do these custom linux firmwares work? Outside of gaming. Do you connect to Wifi? What's the underlying operating system? Do you update your programs? Can you access the command line? Can you set up OpenSSH Server? Can you watch videos, listen to music, do other stuff?

I love my steam deck but super NES games and below look awful on it. GameCube and Dreamcast look awesome though. I've loved the DMG look retro handheld and I've been wavering for a while, but I finally pulled the trigger on this one once I saw garlic OS running. I see this one becoming a big hit with its dedication to 32-bit and below consoles and nostalgic look.
Does it have an option to change aspect ratio? Many systems are 4:3-based sure, but GBA isn't and the footage was noticeably stretched vertically.

Looks like they not only copied the Miyoo Mini but also MiniUI. Which is a shame, they could have used OnionOS instead out of the box. I do not think it's better than the Mini, but seeing how it's constantly out of stock people could get this instead. I don't think it's a smartly designed device though, it was probably very rushed to meet the demands for the Mini, but they could have polished the software a bit instead to stand on it's own merit. For example the Miyoo lacks any network connectivity and therefore retro achievements. It already uses RetroArch as a backbone in the software so including a $2 WiFi module and making it Retro Achievements compatible or even including a scraper could have put it on the map instead of just being a chap copy of a hard to get fan-favorite.
I cant decide between this or Miyoo Mini plus. I don't care for WiFi but I really appreciate a good d-pad. I have big hands so the 35xx might be a better fit and has HDMI. The Miyoo has better OS with Onion OS but 35xx has Garlic OS I could upgrade to. Hmm.

Are the games already downloaded onto the device or is that something the buyer has to do? I would love to get this for the PS1 games alone I just wouldn't know how to put games on it.
most games already come preloaded. ps1 wise, cant expect the whole library to ne there

You can pay more to get it with a game loaded SD card, but unless you want Asian versions of said games, you're better off loading your own
i got mine without extra sd so the cheapest option and it have inside like 4000 games i believe on 64gb sd card.. ofcourse later you will replace all these with yours

I always preferred that wider unit over the later clamshell version or the GB and GBC before.

Question: Is there an option to save the place that I reached in the game? It means saving the last place I reached. I mean, if I played and reached a certain stage, can I save and exit the game and complete it on another day?
Seems quite limited as to what the OS offers right now. I'll wait and see if someone comes out with a custom firmware.
