Installing A Hopped Up Flathead Into The 1932 DeLorean Roadster

  • While there is a lot of work to preform on the DeLorean roadster, we need to figure out what transmission was run in the car in the past. When Matt purchased the car from Ron, the whole trunk was filled with 6 Lasalle transmission. A few of them were modified to fit in an early ford which makes you start to think if the car had one originally. Since we recently picked up a Weiand dressed flathead, it seems like a good time to test fit the engine and potential transmission.

    Number one lesson, NEVER throw away anything you find that goes with the car when you first get it!!!! LOVE that you strive to keep everything original!

    Impressive; Your ability to work on so many different projects at the same time. As cool as the 4-twos look, they are way too much carburation for a street driven flathead. Four carbs is really for an all out engine at Bonneville. Two is plenty for a nice ride around town. The sympathetic restoration makes a lot of sense too. If it gets to be too nice, you won't drive it much, and driving these cars is what it is all about.

    • @robbh.6505
      @robbh.6505 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thomas is spot on; not only is the 4 carb intake too much for the street, but/ w/ straight linkage,
      is very balky and prone to foul plugs. You will be much happier w/ the hi-rise dual carb. set-up,
      for drivability AND Performance. When properly tuned, they are equal to, and can even surpass
      the 3 and 4 carb setups. (And if you are going w/ the '39 trans. instead of the LaSalle, you will
      need a "softer touch on the loud pedal", if you want it to last.)

    Great job Matt.
    Two carbs are a lot less hassle tuning than 4 anyways so it's kinda fortunate you had to swap the headers.
    Altho the 4 carb header looked really cool.

    Ford 1 & 2 ton trucks had the big bolt patern to the block, but the trans was a 4 speed with a 4 bolt patern. Used one a long time ago to put a 55 ford overdrive behind a 46 flathead.

    I've never owned a car with multiple carbs, but I once owned an 1,600 cc Honda Valkyrie motorcycle with 6 carbs [one per cylinder]. Even with the fantastic Honda engineering, all those carbs had to be adjusted and synched on a regular basis. The benefit came just after the sun came up on a Sunday morning in July of 2001. After a thorough safety check and with reasonably new tires on the machine, I rode the 123 miles from the West-side entrance to Interstate 8 in Gila Bend, Arizona to the Fortuna Road exit in Yuma in 53 minutes. At times I slowed to 120. At other times I hit 5th gear redline at 143, but my average speed that day was 139.25 mph. The pavement was maybe three years old, and without many flaws. I never saw a cop and, amazingly, I didn't pass any Westbound cars. I had an old-school police-style windshield, or I might have gone faster. With maybe four square inches of rubber on the road and a water-cooled 6 that "hummed" at speed, the world was almost completely silent. It felt like I was flying an airplane. I tell this story because anyone who loves a high-perforance car, motorcycle, plane or machine of any kind seeks a similar experience. That was the best. I have never experienced anything like it, before or since.
