Since the coronavirus lockdown I've noticed our horses are much more laid back and attentive towards us. Fortunately we have land so we are not restricted in how much time we spend with them. I wonder if the fact we can't do much and there's no rush to work them is giving us the chance to just "be" with them. It's nice :)
(Okay we weren't saying that a few nights ago when we had to repair fencing (In the dark!) they had broken through to reach gorse bushes)
Just an aside, our 9 month old labradoodle has never learnt to sit on command until recently. We have other dogs so are not new to large pups. Do you think humans are being more relaxed about how they approach things or can our non-human friends sense the change at this time?
I love that you are making these videos! My horse (and I) got a bad reputation pretty early on and even more so when I stopped listening to the traditional way of doing things. We were pretty much the odd ones out at every yard. But I took it as a blessing because we started to figure this out for ourselves. Now I'm no longer phased by the horse politics (me and chance have been together 13years, he was 2 and I was 17) but when I was younger i used to find it difficult. Hopefully with you offering this alternative understanding and encouraging an open mind, more people will be able to experience real communication with horses. Really awesome to see 💜

WarwickSchiller I would consider it negative reinforcement. The removal of the pressure strengthened the response you were seeking.
@@sactopyrshep There was no pressure. The flag wasn't an aversive, it drew his attention toward it. That very reason is why I drug it across in front of him on the ground, to show people it's not negative reinforcement. The clicker people tell me that for it be negative reinforcement, there needs to be an aversive. The dictionary says aversive is "something that cause a strong dislike or aversion". There were neither of these two in this.
WarwickSchiller there are only two ways to reinforce or strengthen or get more of a behavior. When the organism chooses to do more of the chosen behavior and that results in good things added that is positive reinforcement. If the animal chooses to do more of the target behavior after something is removed that is negative reinforcement. The organism determines what is reinforcing.
@@WarwickSchiller It is so interesting how we are all seeking the absolute best way for our horses to happy in a human environment. Once the ego is put aside, good things can really start to happen:-) This was a great piece of video.

Learning so much about the importance of connection. Working with a horse that was abused and I think that your approach through connection is the only way to help him to trust humans again. Very slow process but very rewarding. Please continue to post videos ... True treasures and encouragement!

thank you that was good education for me i have a yearling i had for sence he was 4 month old but i been training him seen then he like to buck at me at meal time and dumbly stand where i put his food . Yoshimotto but i want him to stop rebelling at me and listen when i ask him to stay away or step a side or if i ask anything like walk he buck at me at meal time he buck at me sometime can you help tell me in a video what i should do and his mom was very badly abuse as well as he was before me and my mom rescue them i what to train his mom to ride but she is so afraid of whip of any kind she will attack anyone by running over them or stomping them or biting them or pulling them around what can i do to teacher her she not going to get hurt by a whip anymore i can get on her back but that it . if i don't get off she will help me off her self for trying to ride her she has buck my mom off her she has a bond with me and not a full bond with my mom can you show a video to help me out Please !!!!!!!
First get familiar with the concepts of pressure and release. When a horse behaves in a dangerous way, correct him so that the message is crystal clear: that is not allowed. The way to get a horse to move out of the way is to make him uncomfortable (pressure) and to stop doing what makes him uncomfortable once he does what u want (release). Bucking can be a release of energy and not a big deal if he does what you ask. However if you ask something and he responds by kicking at you and ignoring the command it’s disrespect and you need to correct that (slapping him in the butt with a long rein or something has worked for me). Rick gore has some pretty good videos on that stuff if you haven’t found what you’re looking for here
