I pruned my first Palm trees earlier this year. Being from the cold North it was quite a departure from the trees we see up here. I had fun pruning but those thorns were sharp, surprised you weren’t wearing gloves. Thanks for making this video!
Palms have fronds, not branches. but, glad you mentioned to leave the yellowing lowest fronds as they translocate the nutrients upward toward the newly erupting fronds.
great video. Can you please tell me how do I keep an Areca palm (in Florida, outdoors in ground) from growing too tall? I can't find any videos about that Thank you so much!
I live in a 55+ community in Florida and most of the landscapers here cut everything off and only leave a couple of frons sticking straight up. I dont like the look of only a couple of frons left so I do my own and use this method but I feel like I'm out of place ...lol.
If the palm is self-shedding, you can wait. If the palm is not self-shedding and you prefer green fronds, you can trim now. The browning and yellowing fronds are getting ready to turn, so the palm is taking the nutrients within those fronds and distributing them to other areas of the tree. Cutting prematurely can interrupt this process. Sometimes it is best to practice patience and let Mother Nature do her work.
Thanks! You can prune in the springtime, when fronds are brown or when the tree needs a clean up (think: brown fronds, dried fruit stalks). Be sure to determine whether your palm tree needs to be pruned or whether it is self-shedding. If your palm tree needs a little clean up, you can mostly do that any time of the year, just be sure to keep it between 9 and 3! If your palm is self-shedding, wait for the fronds to turn brown completely before removing them - they will either fall or will come off with a gentle pull. Hope this helps!
The seed pod is the way of the palm tree flowering. It is a sign of maturity and health. Realistically, it doesn't matter if you prefer to cut the seed pod prior to opening, during or after. The seed pod attracts insects like ants and bees because of the sweet nectar emitted from the flowering process. It is personal preference to cut them off or leave them, but in general, it does not affect the palm tree.
@@BigEarthSupply I can picture 9-3 at 1 foot above ground, 2 feet above ground or 4 feet above ground. 9-3 just means it’s not trimmed lopsided, it says nothing about the level.
@@rodralph824 look at a circular clock and cut it in half starting from the 9 o clock and finishing at 3 o clock. the shape of the clock that remains is an exact "half-circle". that is what the top of the palm tree should look like after it's trimmed. There should be no fronds hanging below the 9-3 horizontal line. i.imgur.com/r6XfCCZ.png
Palm(trees) don't have branches! And you are correct... You shouldn't remove fonds over the 9-3 line, or horizontal line as default... Unless you have fonds that are with some sort of symptoms, usually lack of nutrients. Nice explanation, except the branch part. 😅
Erm... do you mean frond? Its evident it wasn't a typo because you repeated the ignorance. Also, branch is very acceptable colloquially when speaking about trees ir even shrubs. If you're going to correct someone like a proper Nancy, perhaps you should do a little research yourself, yeah?
Yes, you're correct - some trim that way because they like it, while others do a hurricane because they don't know any better! The 9 to 3 rule is the safest way to trim a palm to avoid over trimming, which stresses out the tree and invites in pests and disease.
This woman makes a mess of the tree When you prune a Phonix Palm you pull down frond and cut as close as possible to the trunk using a small sharp saw not shears. This will leave you a palm that looks noble and not scraggly as her trees look.
that date is looking beautiful. Also, look at that amazing bizzy in the background.

You found the easter egg in the video! Thanks for watching.
I think that is a pigmy date palm and the spines hurt for at leas a week, never heard of the 9 / 3 rule. Thanks for the tip.
Yes, you are so right- They hurt when they get you! You're welcome. Glad you found it useful.
I don't know what you mean by the 9-3 rule
It's not clear to me
Do you have any videos showing pruning of a european fan palm?

Hi there one question if the seed is still find and the ants like to eat it is possible to cut the seed and won't affect the palm tree?

OK 9-3.I know what 9-3 means on a clock but what the hell does that mean for trimming? 9-3 where??
PICTURE IT: If draw a straight line across the palm tree and imagine that is 9 to 3, then anything that hangs below gets trimmed.

Can you explain what is the 9-3 method? How the 9-3 apply to palm? Does it mean one branch is opposite to the other? ….???
Does the 9-3 rule apply to pindo palms too?
