      @@janetwilhelm4435 Hi Janet 🙋 I am also a huge Syd fan from Illinois. I have most of his recordings on CD but I don't recall ever hearing this one before so I thought I would check it out and I saw your little comment. I too have been fascinated with Syd ever since I first heard Pink Floyd back in the 70s. Over the last year or two I have pulled up many live bootlegs of Pink Floyd with Sid still in the band. I hope you have heard these already being a fan like you are. Peace ✌️

    An important point to make about Syd: A lot of those around him wanted to point fingers of blame at others, perhaps to assuage their own guilt. Pete Jenner talked about the “messianic acid freaks” at the Cromwell Rd flat (as if he didn’t understand who lived there). The family blamed Waters, as he was two years older and the impetus for him turning “professional” and dropping out of art school. At the end of the day, though, Syd was responsible for Syd, and the master of his fate. He was a “messianic acid freak.” He read Burroughs and Leary and, fell into that mentality. He was an intellectual, mystic artist. His first girlfriend said, long before Floyd and the rest, he was known around Cambridge as “Syd the Beat.” His real group of friends from Cambridge were all same, and they were the ones who set the atmosphere at the Cromwell Road flat.

    Fantastic Recording! I went to the Cambridge Corn Exchange to see Gilbert O'Sullivan about 12 or so years ago. Great place for Concerts, lots of history there. Thanks for posting this Groovy Audio Recording! 🕘Number 9

    But who is Syd & who is Fred?
    It's hard for me to tell, but I gather the background drone guitar is Syd and Fred Frith is the loose jazz lead

      I am almost certain that is correct. And not always easy to distinguish between that back fill guitar and the bass. I can at times, but lose it other times.

    The healthy Syd Barett was creative. Unfortunately he had the wrong friends. Pink Floyd and Syd were a good match. The Piper... was a good record. His sister Rosmarie once said: His bad times started with Pink Floyd... I think his bad times started with the shared flat that Syd lived in... He hangs out with junkies too much... His two solo records should have been recorded with Pink Floyd, they would have been better musically... Drugs ruin your life. I'm interested in how Syd lived with his illness... Did he ever have therapy???

    Would anyone know if it was Syd on the lead guitar, with all those odd riffs, or is he in the background?
    Also, do we think Syd would have had his shaved head by this point??

    • @blackbirdpiggies

      Unfortunately, it is questionable if Syd is playing here at all. He was a guest at this gig by Last Minute Put Together Boogie Band but was not on stage the whole show. Likely if he was playing, its not on lead. In my mind, Syd is chugging along here, digging the rhythm and adding color.
      This is before Syd shaved his head bald.

      Syd’s not playing lead, Fred Frith is. Fred Frith sounds a lot like Syd Barrett, though. I highly recommend checking out his albums with Henry Cow and others.

    Syd really lost his talent to drugs at this stage. You can hear, it in the music. The out-of-date phycadellic style and lack of any kind of flow. Not hard to see how he went completely off the rails then cold turkey thereafter. Even when clean, the damage was already done. Such a shame.

      I see you've bought and taken the official Pink Floyd story about Barrett completely to heart. I love Floyd too, Waters is a brilliant lyricist, but I don't believe his version about Syd at ALL. He says it to ease his humanitarian conscience. I believe he performed a 'coup de grace' and became the bands ostensible leader. Sad, but true and ultimately great. But I'll never swallow the 'Syd flipped out' story. Syd was an artist with no interest in the media fops he saw them becoming. But none of us can ever know for sure

    • @psychedelicpiper999
      @psychedelicpiper999 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Fred Frith is the one playing in the “outdated”, according to you, psychedelic style. He’s enjoyed a long prolific and successful career since then, while still continuing to play psychedelic/avant-garde experimental rock.
      Syd’s actually the one playing a straightforward blues riff in the background.
