    Boron carbide did it's job, there's a reason it's been used for armor for over 50 years.
    I recommend using UMWPE to reduce weight for the back material. It also will significantly improve chances of catching the slug.

    • @CrashMakerspace
      @CrashMakerspace  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +112

      I'm using a high density Fiberglass on the rear which so far, it's very light and super hard. But I want to make a video of direct comparisons across weight, thickness, deformation, etc for UWHMPE / KV / FG / CF / KV+CF / Basalt for a nice summation of each

    • @generalbakedpotato6150
      @generalbakedpotato6150 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +29

      @CrashMakerspace Generally speaking fiberglass is really good for backface deformation and is cheap. But really heavy compared with everything else. It's also not great against armor piercing projectiles.
      UHWPE is also harder to work with due to how slick it is and resistant to soaking just as a warning.

    • @Fgway
      @Fgway 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      As far as anecdotes go, the best performance I've seen in video (lately) is a plate of titanium inside a slab of umwpe. There's something about the composite of materials and how they react to energy together. I estimate this video maker will arrive on the principle of whatever is going with that... If he hasn't already

    • @inthedark65
      @inthedark65 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      @@Fgway so a lot of armor uses uhwmpe for its deformation properties to absorb energy. the titanium plate acts as the "hard" strike surface to take the brunt of the force. but depending on the titanium alloy your using titanium also has amazing deformation properties. so if you match the right alloy with uhwmpe both materials will act in unison to absorb the energy into the plate. but even with that plate. the thing that plagues non steel plate body armor is multi hit. if you get hit multiple time in a close proximity ones going through. but steel plate armor has the weight and spauling problem.

    • @generalbakedpotato6150

There is also a few unique processes in production that we see which I'm unsure of the scalability for.

    Nice video! A few tips:
    1. You could try to adjust the surface of the plate. Don't make it smooth, put small hexagonal pyramids on top. This will help to divert the momentum of the bullets so that they don't hit the plate at a 90° angle. You could even include these pyramids inside the plate.
    2. When shooting the plate, you should always shoot them at an 90° angle. Shooting at a plate on the ground while standing while increase the effective thickness that the bullet will hav eto pass through, which is kinda cheating a bit.
    3. Beware of ricochets of the smaller rounds.
    Great work!

    The next step i'd say is impact dispersion - a good way to test is to use "impact indicators/shock sensor" stickers, a method i'd try first is actually balloons/pouches filled with oobleck (imo, ideally you'd want to make a non-newtonian fluid act like a gel when "liquid" and compresses locally on induced stress at the shortest possible interval due to ballistic projectile velocity), the ballistic properties of oobleck are somewhat documented here on youtube, but i have a feeling it will act pretty solid (heh) as a shock absorber

  • @ChurchoftheIgnorati
    @ChurchoftheIgnorati หลายเดือนก่อน

    Just an idea... Take that interesting lattice structure though have it 3D printed in hexagons, with 7 holes each. Then sew them together with high tensile steel wire through the centre hole and you have something quite similar to strips of chainmail which should be quite flexible. You can then sew these strips together with another wire through the outside holes to create panels or even a fitted garment. Mix up some polyborondimethylsiloxane ( the constituent material of silly putty or bouncy putty) in a polyurethane foam and soak the hexagonal chainmail in it while the foam forms and you should have a sort of super-oobleck non newtonian sponge. So if those sheets are 4mm thick, have a couple of extra mm either side of this foam gunk. Hence when a bullet hits the rotational effect on the metal hexagons will be strongly resisted both forwards and backwards. Therefore transferring much of the energy away from the direction of impact and also to adjacent hegagons, which would also rotate. Come to think of it you could also melt glass onto the rear side such that it drips through the remaining holes, then quench it to form something akin to Prince Rupert Drops and tempered steel. Course these would shatter if impacted however as it would be contained within the super-oobleck foam even the tiny shards should be both contained and provide resistance. Sort of a combination of chainmail and the plastic armour applied to WW2 merchant ships, only with a super-oobleck replacing the bitumen and tempered glass shards replacing the stone chips. Might even work better with 4 sided hexagons, as the larger the piece being hit the greater the moment of rotational force which would be resisted exponentially by the super-oobleck foam gunk. Hence a hit on one part would produce a ripple of rotational force around the wearer, dissipating much of the energy. Would also look verily cool.
