    in my program we use terms like 'pregnant people' 'mestruating people', 'people with uteruses', 'birthing persons' and terms like this! It felt awkward changing language at first but now it comes naturally to me and it is so important!
    We always use the term 'catch' babies instead of 'deliver' since that is more empowering to the birthing individual who did all the work!

    • @RachelSouthard
      @RachelSouthard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yay!! Thanks for mentioning all this!!:)
      Personally, I don’t like the word “catching” and probably will never use that. It sounds really chaotic and barbaric, and as if there’s no skill involved with delivering. Complete personal opinion, but yeah. 😁

    “Pregnant people” is a good always a good term. Reproductive health/wellness, sexual health, obstetric care, gynecological care, etc. i think it’s good to use a combination of these terms thought your personal statement depending on each sentence you use them in! I would reach out when the time comes to a trans/NB/GNC individual to read the statement as well to see if they can offer additional insight

    Loved your last lil segment on inclusivity. As a queer person with vaginal/uterus/pelvic dysfunction it’s so frustrating to have everything compared to the heteronormative woman’s experience. I’m gay so there’s no chance I’m pregnant but the number of times I’ve had to really spell it out for doctors really amazes me in 2022. Glad to see the next gen of practitioners are embracing intersectionality 🏳️‍🌈

    I say sexual&reproductive, or gynecological health! When working with gender hormone therapy, we refer to that as gender affirming care. Working at Planned Parenthood (where we have many diverse pts of all gender identities), these are all pretty standard terms to use (and the ones we were trained to use upon hiring ). Hope that helps!

    I love how much you think about the feelings and perspectives of others when you talked about the best, most inclusive terminology for OB/GYN. I have met OB/GYNs who seem to treat women as human incubators and prioritize their ability to carry a fetus above who they are as a human being, and I love that you do not think that way at all. You will be a great OB/GYN!

    as a female presenting nonbinary person thats premed, idk it made me tear up hearing someone thinking about language and what that affect can have on inclusivity! in my day to day life, Ill say people with vaginas or people with a penis, but I know that isnt the most professional sounding phrase. I wish more folks thought about this, and id be so interested to know what language people use in OBGYN to be more inclusive.

  • @_moonstonecoven
    @_moonstonecoven 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I love how you're taking everyone into consideration and working to be inclusive in your language. After thinking about it, I would probably suggest just saying "obstetric and gynecological health". It doesn't assume gender, reproductive status or ability, and is straight to the point. If you are a person who requires obstetric or gynecological services, you fall under that umbrella. Nice and inclusive. I'm interested to hear what you end up going with; it's a topic I haven't given as much thought to as I probably should.
    As always, great video! Can't wait to see what you're up to in next week's vlog!

Been working a lot on the ambulance and as a telemonitor technician. Thank you for your weekly videos. Take time for yourself ❤ only advice I have is to work out in the morning if you can. I notice that you seem stressed out about not going to the gym and it being too late. I find that getting the workout done early truly makes the day a whole lot better and I can get more done. I'm up at the gym as early as 5am sometimes and it honestly feels awesome but going to bed early is essential. Keep up the hard work girl!!

    ik this video is like over a month old, im behind on youtube, but idc. my life has been crzay recently and ive been going through a lot and i also havent watched your videos in a while, so today i decided to catch up on your content and everytime i do, im reminded how much i admire you and how much comfort you and your videos bring me. i want to go into the medical field hen i graduate and i really really admire your drive, your passion, the way your eyes light up when you talk abt medicine, especially ob gyn, and when you give random med facts and explain stuff. i really really hope that some day, when i choose my specialty, i have that same drive towards it. i dont think you know how much i (and i know so many more feel the same way) admire and appreciate how real you are. i feel like a lot of people, content creators, tend to only show the good in their lifes. but thats not the case with you, you show us both sides, you talk abt mental health, youre helping break the stigma, you let us know we're not alone... and of course, we know you dont show us everything, but what you do show is worth a lot. so yeah, i just wanted to say thank you, thank you for being someone i can admire and look up to and make my days better and thank you for giving me a reaosn to stay.

    It’s certain that if one thinks “woman’s health” means “pregnancy and reproduction” it won’t be inclusive. But since woman’s health and the word “woman” in general means so much more than reproduction, motherhood, femininity and heterosexuality, we’re good with using it.
    As it is already including (therefore inclusive) of all the people born women.
    And if we do not use the word, I want to see the word “man” being as debated, discussed, questioned and, frankly, erased as the word (and the history of) women is at the moment.
    Only women give and die giving birth. Only women need abortions. Only them go to jail in countries where abortions are illegal. In these countries, only women go to prison when they have a miscarriage... It’s only happening to women. It breaks my heart when women don’t even want to use the word that used to describe their sisters who died before them, oppressed because of our biology.
    The word woman is not the problem, the problem is all the stories we tell about the word and what it means to be a woman. It’s the false, misogynistic representations we have of it and all the unwritten and the untold history of women that is the problem.
    To see it erased everywhere shows me the level of hatred toward women and honestly, it’s making me so depressed and it’s killing me softly.

    • @RachelSouthard
      @RachelSouthard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Saying “woman” assumes gender identity, which varies amongst individuals. I think you missed the main point of using words that are inclusive.

    Hi Rachel! I’m starting M3 with OB this month and your OB videos have made me SO excited for my first rotation!!! I love how you brought up inclusive language at the end. I think it depends on what we’re talking about and whom we’re talking to! “Reproductive health” can work if it’s relevant to pregnancy, “family planning” if you want to include abortion in the pregnancy umbrella, “sexual health” if you’re talking about anything sex-related, or even just the words “obstetrics” & “gynecology” if you have a more scientific audience! The “-ologies” and body parts themselves aren’t inherently gendered so sometimes it works to just say what you’re actually referring to (“people with vaginas”). I’ve heard OBs use “pregnant people,” “gestational parent,” “carrying parent,” and “people who can get pregnant” all in different contexts when relevant to include everyone with uteruses. I think Mama Dr. Jones has made some videos about inclusive OB language!

    Can I also ask, I want to potentially do Research with one specific Doctor for my Masters in Genetics Counseling. Should I address the doctor by name, or should I just discuss my area of interest (one of the questions on the PS asks us about our areas of interest for Research) and also I am not sure where to discuss my Speaking experience (I have spoke on a YA panel at 3 Kabuki Conferences as well as with her once to Medical students and will be doing that again next Fall) so not sure if that should go in a section where I discuss "other relevant information" or if I should include that with my interest on Kabuki Research since it has to do at least somewhat with why I am interested in it. She is one of the few doctors that does Research on Kabuki which is a passion of mine because that is my Genetic Syndrome (and the doctor I would want to do Research with is actually MY personal doctor). I feel like I am overthinking it (and cannot even apply yet because I have to get my Prerequisite classes done first) But I do not want to come across as too forward.

    How about a funny random story? So, my daughter - who is 21 months - goes to my stepsister in-laws house a couple nights a month for “auntie sleepovers.” Last night, she went up to my stepsister in law’s dog (whom she adores), pointed to the dog’s butt, and exclaimed “butt!” She’s the funniest kid! If you put on music, she’ll dance around and shake her hips and giggle up a storm. When ever life gets weird, think of a dancing toddler!

The fact that I now have to be so careful in identifying what I have to not offend others is really getting out of hand with this generation. I do love your videos, but be who you are! You shouldn’t feel uncomfortable just because some people in your following want you to become more “inclusive”.

      Thank God somebody said this, this is out of control chaos. Identify and live your life how you want but biology is biology and it’s rooted in science. There’s literally no such thing as pregnant people.

      Quite a few people aren’t happy about this, but this is how I see it-I respect everyone. How they see themselves, how they feel, who they are, etc.
      the best patient care can be provided if your patient feels safe, comfortable, they can be themselves and not withhold information from you due to fear or judgement, etc.
      OBGYN is a field that is very personal and you’re dealing with very private information and a very private region of the body.
      This language embraces everyone, and does absolutely zero harm.

    • @St_r_i_v_e
      @St_r_i_v_e 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RachelSouthard I agree, but in life, you will never make everyone happy. You can try your best to not be biased when it comes to your care and not judge. But at the end of the day, this field is what it is. We have body parts that need to be taken care of and they have to be called what science has defined them by, that is not to shoot down someone’s belief. No one is saying they can’t define who they are, but point blank if you see an Ob/gyn you have vital organs that need to be taken care of and those organs have names. I have been in healthcare for 13 years and never have I ever seen such a pull and drag about what science says and what the facts are.

      @@RachelSouthard you are so sweet Rachel and I sympathize and respect with how you are trying to navigate the language. However you talk about feelings and that there is no harm with accommodating these things but there is harm that is being done to “Women” in regards to certain aspects of all this. I’m a female Latino and in high school but my older sister is in college and lost her partial scholarship in volleyball to a trans woman/girl on the team, also the trans community has attempted to take over/change our Spanish speaking language because it’s based on gendered language. I could go on about how some of these things effect women, I love your channel but you can’t say there is no harm to accommodating them at their every whim, hopefully at some point this stuff never moves to the point where you or someone you care about is affected.

    Great vlog! We are absolutely in a transition of how we talk about OB/gyn. More inclusive language could include things like birthing people/person, talking about systems like calling it gynecology and obstetrics instead of women's health. I'm so glad that we are thinking about how we can make sure our patients (or, for me, future patients) can feel most comfortable with our language. Mama doctor jones and Dr. Jennifer Lincoln have some good Tik toks on the subject, but I don't know if they have whole videos on the topic.

The third year MD is not easy omg I'm starting surgery rotation soon. Your attitude and vlogs help me survive my studies 🥰 so many times it was so hard and thanks to you and my mom 🥰I'm still studying 📖 . Always love your videos! But to answer your question, I remember talking about this in my maternal and child’s health class. A lot of our language was addressing the current anatomy that a person has. So…“people assigned female” or even saying “person who has a cervix”. “Well-woman exams” would be “sexual health screening” or “cervical screening.” And even saying, pregnant person instead of pregnant woman. Language is important- im glad you’re paying attn to it :) wish you the best!

    I had a full day of clinical skills and OMM, and I’m studying for my anatomy quiz tomorrow!! I’m a first year osteopathic medical student, and I watched your videos all through applying to school, and your videos throughout your clinical rotations have been really getting me through the trenches of first year. It reminds me that there’s exciting things to come! I love how much you love OB-GYN!

    Ahh Rachel! You make me more and more excited about OBGYN and I cannot wait for third year rotations. I’m shadowing some OBGYNs this summer so who knows what I end up learning/doing!!! On the note of inclusivity, I’m pretty sure gynecological health is the way to go. But you definitely can’t go wrong with using a variety of terms! You’ve got this!

    I am at a crucial point in my program where I need to propose my dissertation in the next month so that I can apply for internship at the end of the year and be one step closer to finishing my PhD. There are a lot of days of stress and worry about if I can get it done, but watching your vlogs helps me feel rejuvenated for another week so that I can keep living my dreams and making them reality!

    You're so right about the 'women's health' thing as a term. How do you make that fully inclusive without it taking up half a page? Not even saying people with two X chromosomes works since XXX and XY are valid chromosome combos for being born with female parts. XY females do exist and are usually not entirely fertile. I had an awesome biology teacher in secondary school years ago (with that I mean over a decade ago) who taught us this because he just loved these kind of random parts. He also off handedly mentioned gender dysphoria during the same chapter, which was about genetics. His lessons were great. He had the same passion for his teaching that you seem to have for OB/GYN plus a bit of a wacky personality and it showed.
    I think I'd go be a gynecologist as well if I had the stress resilience you need to both study medicine and work in the field. I can't deal with stress well and the pandemic has made it worse. Wish me luck in finding a suitable job :). I'm just lucky I don't have to look with US standards because I wouldn't be able to hold down a full time job and here it's actually common to have a parttime one and you can live comfortably from it.

    Hi! I love your videos! Do you think you could talk a little about how you stayed motivated as a pre-med. I find that a lot of people in my major (physiotherapy) and me really wanted mes school (but got rejected), and now we’re finding it hard to know if we really want medicine. I’m in Quebec by the way, so the path is different. I feel so confused with my future, and I don’t know if I’m trying to convince myself that I don’t want medicine because I don’t believe in myself as much (also scared of being rejected again).

    Having a roller coaster of a day but your vlogs always make me feel better!!! Even though I’m from NZ which has only 2 medical schools within the entire country and the way our system works towards becoming a MD is a bit different, I love watching your videos and getting excited for what the possible future may include 🥰 watching your passion of OBGYN makes me tear up a little, as it’s great to see someone just enjoy something to the fullest.
    I… actually failed my last year of high school because of mental health related and (at the time) undiagnosed ADHD related problems. It’s only when my mum encouraged me to take a health science course after hs that I realised I truly wanted to go to medical school, but I never thought I’d be capable enough to. I got my first test result back and I got a mark of 100%!!! So I am extremely happy with that, but also extremely scared that despite this course being a course you take to get into uni that when the University sees my application for pre-med that they’ll just see my last year high school results and I won’t get in. But I will keep on trying! I hope you have a wonderful day - you deserve it! :)
