The original A-340 version was introduced in 1993, and since that introduction date, three additional versions have been made available. The B-777 original variation was introduced in 1995. Extended range variations and a longer fuselage versions were available in 2004 and 2006. Both of these aircraft (A-340 & B-777) have proven to be reliably serviceable, but the big difference is in the power plants. It takes four of the power plants to provide the needed thrust propulsion for the A-340's, but only two of the more powerful GE-90's for propelling the B-777's very robust and steadily serviceable twin engine long range aircraft. I'm believing the A-340 could have been propelled with just two of the more powerful GE90's had Airbus opted for their use. Hence, the brand new twin engine A-350, which is just beginning to enter service. It appears on the horizon, the twin engine concept seems to be the way forward, rather than the four engine concept. I'm believing the B-777 is a more lasting and serviceable aircraft for the airline industry.
No, it doesnt take 4. The A340 had 4 so it didn't need ETOPS certification. It couldve easily operated with 2 engines. 4 engines is more redundant, while 2 is more economical.
