- Hello guys watermelon competition 2023. Some of the variety that I am growing this year is Sugar babies crimson, sweet jubilee , Charleston gray, Congo, and Carolina cross . I am also using Miracle grow potting mix and miracle grow soil to help with growing my watermelon this year. Best of luck to everyone!!!

Black love is powerful!
My Husband passes away suddenly on April 28th of this year. Losing him took a lot out of me. Especially since he was my first everything and my best friend for almost 47 years. But he raised the best watermelons ever!! But he used fish heads. He saved his fish heads. Would dig his hole a little deeper throw in the fish head with gardening lime. A little soil on the lime, then the seed. Then the other parts of the fish went in holes the same way under sweet potatoes vines and squash seeds. I never saw him use anything else to feed those three things. And he was known to have the best flavored vegetables. And all his melons was planted the same way. Our Sons and Sons in laws are helping me care for the gardens this year. If I continue to grow anything. I will continue to use the fish. He used to say " watermelons and figs is a Black man's best friend" 😉 Much success Cousins. Oh and I subscribed. Much Respect 🙇♀️

Question. I do composting, but I keep my composting pile w fruits/vegetables covered so I don't get unwanted critters. What discourages them from coming in and eating your good watermelon? Grow on my friend

I have a mango seedling I thought about using a watermelon to help to propagate better in soil. I have the seedling in water and I had made a mini greenhouse to root.

@@SupremeFamilyGarden I had some success last season. I grew some Japanese Silver Watermelons. Really sweet you should try if you haven’t already.
I grow mine in 45 gallon grow bags two in each. I would love to be apart of the challenge next year 😀

Awesome video. Its a bit late for me this year but would love to enter the competition in 2024. If I win would donate prize to a good cause. Also I am working on a solution to beat that annoying powdery mildew. Totally organic and any one make their own. Just came across this video today, I also use the miracale grow soil, it's the cheapest of the better soils. Due to injuries/ can't bend much I'm trying for the 1st. time to grow watermelons (everything) in pots and raised container beds, I have a few that I'm trying to growing vertical, Do you have any experience in container gardening, do you have any tips for it or a video? Miracle grow organic potting mix has worked wonders for our family. We actually grew tomatoes last year with no additional fertilizer and they were huge and very delicious.

Ant and critters are good for the soil. Organic food will have critters eating on them. You don't know this?

I expected more information on growing watermelons 🍉 for beginners. You didn’t cover a direct approach to growing melons; frequency of watering, need for fertilizer, harvesting. 🤔

I don't know how long you guys been farming but you are doing good and I am in Minnesota where the snow covers the ground. I like to farm but what do I do in this situation? I love all kinds of fruits because they are medicinals and have no side effects. Alex

I visited Jackson Mississippi a few years ago and there was an old man on the side of the road selling seeded watermelons. That was the best watermelon I’ve ever had in my life!

Great video fam. Have you tried diy drip irrigation using gallon milk jugs or water bottles as your carrier system? It saves water and time👍❤️. I want to get in that grow-off too,👍❤️!
Just found your channel, love the tips on growing watermelons. Sweetest Charleston Greys I ever grew I used goat manure. Will be trying the bananas and epsom salts. Last year my largest melon was 45#

Your watermelon patch is HUGE! We are planning to grow watermelon SUCCESSFULLY this year! I may have to try the tip about flipping the rinds over in the patch! Also the potassium and salt.... Imma try it on a couple!

My grandson's first "crop" is 4 Golden Midget watermelon plants. :D He's so excited. And, we decided on small fruit bc they'll be ready faster. 10 y.o. ...difficult to wait.

I just found your channel and subscribed. No watermelon growing this year in my garden but I’m excited to see the results for your watermelon grow off. I love to eat watermelon. If I had found you sooner I would’ve added it to my garden but i will just watch y’all lol😂. I do have more tomatoes than ever for this year in my garden and new veggies for me are sweet potatoes from slips I started so that was a big goal for me❤ this year!

THAT is my dream watermelon patch!! I grew Jubilee last year and I'll never grow it again 🤣 Those suckers were 65lb melons and huge. I couldn't give them away fast enough lol
Where did you buy your seeds from?
Ok not competing. I’m doing something different. I started with collards. Planted twenty plus varieties and let them all mix together. Now I am replanting and growing under subsistence conditions. No fertilizer very little water and mostly neglect. The strongest plants that survive go to seed. I collect and replant that seed. By three years they are adapting to my area and my growing methods. Then I’d start selecting for what traits I want and replant seeds from those plants and cull and eat plants I don’t want. After a while I have developed my own landrace that performs better any store bought seed. I tenatovely started that process this year with watermelon. Only have about five varieties for now. Will let them cross pollinate and grow out next year those seed and add in new varieties to the patch as well. Slower progress as my focus is the collard landrace at the moment. I’m also growing India kajari melons which taste like half cantaloupe and half honeydew mixed together in a small personal melon with thin skin and no rind so it’s all taste but won’t take abuse in commercial agriculture and transportation to stores so you have to grow your own to enjoy the flavor or go without. Best of luck with your competition. If you are curious about landrace there is a book out online by a guy named Lofthouse.

I started late but I can't wait. This is my first time growing watermelons. I'm excited. I know to get the black and gold bag next time.

I have heard that melons cross pollinate. Do you have issues with cross pollination in your melons? How far apart do you plant each variety?

When I grow them in pots I dig a hole in the ground and put the pots in the ground that keeps the pot from drying out quickly
Nice sunflowers. Let one get a lone root ball that's bigger than a basketball and it will get like 10 feet tall. Sunflowers are just a must for my little food farm.

I have to say that banana rotting down in a bucket also with some worm castings (what about some egg shells too?) & magnesium sulfate with the nitrogen from chop and drop, plus your miracle grow organics in ground (or smaller variety in pot) is some great info! I saw the difference you got going on as you have sand like I do here. Very helpful, y’all did great! Have to go see what Bobby and Broke have going on and Bull too, oh my lot of rib poking coming our way. lol

I'm going to get me some of that Miracle Grow Organics. I have a few Crimson Sweet plants that are still hanging in there. I wasn't expecting them to do nothing because our summers are typically pretty mild here.

First time watching, and now, a new subbie. 👍🏽 Thank you for this video! I’m growing 8 different varieties of melons this year. I actually started off with 10 , but the seeds for my Kajari melons, and my Golden Honeymoon melons were about 3 or 4 years old, and only one of them (Kajari) came up, and then it fizzled out shortly thereafter. 🤦🏽♀️ My mother can never understand why I always choose to grow so many different varieties of everything I plant, (onions, lettuce, edamame, etc.,) but in some cases, it’s just because I like trying new things. Thanks again. Looking forward to more tips.
