I am in the middle of reading Alan Morinis' first book, called Climbing Jacob's ladder. I am enjoying reading it very much, as it is written with such clarity, intelligence, and humility. one thing, however, that i do question, is the idea that Judaism has only recently been about the inner world. in my experience at least, that is not the case at all. just took at the talk on the Torah portion given by Rabbis in Orthodox synagogues everywhere. The Torah itself, after all, is the ultimate book of mussar. Plus, let us not forget the earlier chapters of the Rambam's Mishna Torah, or other classic works such as Duties of the Heart, Palm Tree of Devorah, and Path of the Just. True, that they were written centuries ago, but so was the Torah, the Talmud, and our Siddur, which is certainly filled with reflections on our inner life. Yes, they are all old works, but any good Rabbi brings these works to life, plus reading them on their own, even as translations into English, have an abundance of material on the inner life
Thank you for telling your story. I am enjoying rereading the Mussar books you have written. If you write future Mussar books I will be sure to buy and read them.
May the doors swing open wide so the light can shine on more and more. Thank you for sharing a bit of your story.
