I love when plants are resilient!
me too!! it’s comforting haha
Hi Joy and planty friends!
In terms of ferns, if you want to give it another go, I'd go for "footed" ferns. They tend to be hardier- Maidenhair is one of the types you'd likely want in self watering and maybe a cloche. I've had great luck with my Kangaroo paw fern (it's been veeerry tolerant of neglect), and a Bluestar fern (quite similar to the Kangaroo paw in terms of being a "footed" fern and can deal with a bit of neglect). In general, with the "footed" ferns, I've found that light tends to be the most important, shortly followed by water. Once you find the placement it likes, you've pretty much unlocked easy mode on them as long as you water them at a similar frequency as something like jungle cactus- I've got my ferns in a roughly 60% peat, 20% perlite and 20% chunky bark mix).
you make me want to try an Anthurium clarinervium 😬
that is so, so good to know!! thank you! I’m taking notes haha ✍️
I've given up on syngoniums, couldn't get rid of the mealie bugs. Every time I thought the plants were clean and all the yellowed leaves gone I would find more bugs. Aglaonemas have replaced them and they're so easy going.
I feel that! I definitely have lost a lot of my love for syngoniums over the years
Totally agree with the "footed fern" advice, I would also suggest asplenium, I have asp. Leslie and it's the easiest fern I've ever had.. it can go bone dry or be consistently moist, higher or lower light, it's just happy. I've never had a pest on it even if there were pests around. Not sure if it scratches the fern itch though, cause it looks more like a salad :D
Oh and my brandtianum has also been given one last chance to behave, otherwise it goes out of the house during spring!
ahh thank you for confirming that! it's pretty clear that not all ferns are created equal, lol. I just looked up the asp. leslie and it definitely resembles salad 😂😂
haha good grief about the brandtianum! I hope yours turns a corner, but they are hooligans, I swear
My Hoya bella is...struggling. I will definitely get a new one if/when this one croaks. And you should look into Holly fern! It is BEAUTIFUL and SUPER easy. I love mine so much.
oh noo! I hope it hangs on for you!!
I just looked up the holly fern and you are so right. it's beautiful!
@@sproutswithjoy AND SOOOOOOOO EASY!
I lost my fern cactus (selenicereus chrysocardum) and I miss it! It was 3 years old and nice and big and it got some kind of disgusting grey fungus on it. Waaah. Also my Rhipsalis Rhombea but it never would grow. Have mostly easy Philodendrons and am trying to think beyond the genus.
oh my goodness, I'm so sorry you lost your fern cactus! I absolutely love mine and I would be so sad if it died.
hey, easy philodendrons are great, but it's always fun to branch out and experiment.
All my pink variegated alocasia reverted! Not buying anymore 😂
Oh that is such a bummer! I don’t blame you haha
Try a Kangaroo Paw fern, mine is huge and I have owned it for over four years. I have tried so many Maidenhair ferns over the past forty years. I have never been successful for more than six months. I absolutely love them, so I will probably keep trying, sigh. They grew wild in my late father's shade house in San Diego, CA. The plant that I will replace this Spring is the Varigated Prayer plant.
that's a great suggestion! thank you!
oh my goodness, I can't imagine how gorgeous they would be out in the wild. wow!
I have 2 different clones of the Philo Dark Lord I got this past spring and they are different the way they are growing. One is going crazy and getting bigger leaves the other is puny and hasn't grown much.
that's fascinating! it's crazy how two plants of the same species can behave totally differently. genetics, I guess?? and I wonder if I just have a dud. lol.
@sproutswithjoy I'm going to let it finish growing this pole extension and start the next. When I chop it I'll have some cuttings . When I do I'll check to see if you want onen.oneness. we can do a plant trade
Get a kangaroo fern they are so much easier than a maidenhair fern.
Good luck with the maidenhair fern! I had one that I put into a kokedama but life got in the way and it shriveled into a few crispy stems 😬 it's so beautiful though-I would definitely get it again and put it into a terrarium!
thank you!!
ahh yes, I have heard they can honestly be so unforgiving, but they're so gorgeous that maybe it's worth the struggle 🫣
Good Morning ☀️ from Southern California ☕️
Good morning!! It must be quite early for you! 💕
I have totally given up on ferns except for my staghorn. I have two of them both supposed to be different verities?? I only have two anthuriums and neither of them are the velvet leaf types. I can not do the velvet leaf types. I have only had the two a few months and both are growing nicely so far. The only new plants I will consider buying now are Rhipsalis and possibly hoys. BUT I honestly think I have enough cool hoya. I have not had much success buying the "Rare" philodendrons from Walmart. I will not be buying them again. If a plant struggles for me then dies it goes on my no buy list immediately. I have more than enough pants that thrive for me. Even sending off as many plants as I have done in the last year it still took me 12 gallons of water to get them watered and there were a few that did not even need water.
I'm glad that you've gotten to a point in your plant journey where you've figured out what works for you and what doesn't! Rhipsalis and hoya are awesome.
@@sproutswithjoy Back in the early 70's when I first got into plants there did not seem to be the massive variety we now have to choose from. I did not even know the word hoya . Also online shopping was not available. No youtube plant videos to influence others. It is a lot easier to get too many plants now. So far I have been resisting. winter cold makes that easier.
Gm y’all
good morning! :)
