SBAC = Society of British Aircraft Constructors. The good thing about this kit is that it is of the prototype with the wing fences further towards the wing-roots. I'm sure it was the Hawk I would have built as a kid.

By the 70s SBAC had been changed to mean Society of British Aerospace Companies.
I remember the kit being criticised in-period BECAUSE it depicted the prototype and not the production version.

@@EricIrl Yes, the wing fence is in a different place for a start. Still, it is a collector's item now.

The Matchbox Hawk was a Purple Range (Series 1) kit, while the Airfix version was Series 3, and a lot more expensive. Matchbox later did a single-seat Hawk 200 version, which kept the original wing sprue, but included a new fuselage sprue. A new kit, but they only need one new mould.

Hawks with the 30mm aden cannon was a last ditch defence aircraft in RAF strike command in the 80s.

bought a Hawk in a job lot recently but its got decals for a British or Finnish version so may be a different kit , boxes were in quite poor condition but kits seem ok

I'd have thought 'red and white' would have been the standard plastic colours!

peter - the box did have a yellowish tinge to the artwork. i remember the kit featured a 'hole' in the fuselage top - the feature was OK, but a blanked out hole would have been better - interestingly the instructions show that the hole needed to be open but i'm almost certain the one i bought featured this hole already cleared.,
now, i'm fairly certain that the airfix hawk came out around the same time [as it became available at my local shop] and this was much more detailed, i was becoming more discerning and was starting to buy airfix again [mrca, tomcat, marauder etc].
i can't recall paying much attention to instructions on matchbox kits as they were all very simple and followed an almost standardised build - the lack of weapons etc contributed to this.

Hi Alan, I had to have a long think...🤔 I reckon my favourites were the F4M Phantom, Harrier & I really liked the little Humber Mk2 armoured car! They were not really the best kits but just fun to build. 😬

...But I also liked the Wellington, B-25 Mitchell, Corsair & Tomcat...🤔
