MY RIDING STORY: HOW I BECAME A HORSE TRAINER

  • The culmination of 15+ years worth of experiences with horses. This is no where near all of the horses that I’ve had in my life but these are (most of) the horses that helped build me.
It’s not been an easy journey - I’ve learned just about everything the hard way. I learned heartbreak at an early age and how to keep going even when everything sucked.
Although some of these horses gave me a run for my money, I’m so thankful for each and every one of them and the lessons that they had to teach me.
I hope you guys enjoy this video and learning about my experiences with horses. As you’ll see, I had a rather unconventional upbringing with horses and I didn’t have anyone to set me on the right path for a good portion of my life. Some of it is kind of embarrassing because of the way I learned but this is my story and I somehow made it work.
Thank you guys so much for being so patient for this video - It wasn’t an easy one to film. Enjoy!
    -Stephanie

I feel so bad for you Stephanie. Big G seemed like the one in a million. He may not have been perfect but you two seemed happy together. I’m glad you have what you have now because you more than deserve it.
I’m definitely hoping to get a horse something like Big G one day .

Dude, when you started tearing up, I just wanted to hug you. Like no one should have to see their animal pass away and it’s something that stays with you forever. I love you and your videos and I can see you still struggle with this and I feel for you. I struggle with mental illness, and I hit my lowest point when my first service dog passed away. We care about our horses and animals and it’s not easy to let them go. Love from NY❤️

This is literally so inspirational. I am lucky enough to ride at a very privileged show barn. However, riding at these places comes with some other down falls. Of course I’m lucky enough to have professional hunter and jumper riders teaching me but my family will never buy or lease a horse for me. I begged for over 5 years now and I have never gotten one. It’s hard because you see younger kids and other people living the dream you wish to have. It makes me feel very discouraged and I have sometimes felt like I’m not worthy or wanted there. It’s hard. I let jealousy get to me sometimes. However over the years I had one trainer come into my life and he changed the game. He taught me all the things I needed to move forward this year. He taught me framing, deep course work, and how to actually ride. The things is he may seem like every other trainer but he believed in me so much. He always told me he loved to teach me and said I would be the next show rider at my barn. Those little things made me feel so brave and confident. He always told me he was just like me as a kid. Didn’t own a horse once in is career and he is training young horses undersaddle and everything. You just need that one person in your life to change the game and he was the one. Luckily I also had the pony that changed my life too. To anyone who actually read this comment and you are in the same place I am. Don’t give up. Just wait. It’s going to get better and your dream will come true. You will have the one horse and trainer that changes the game. Don’t worry. You are worthy even though you don’t spend thousands of dollars a month. Keep going! The best riders are the ones who don’t get it handed to them. You get more joy from the work you put into it. Just don’t give up, If I believe in you, you should too 😊

I’m the same, well not exactly. I’ve been riding since I was 9. I’m 11 now. But, seeing my friends all get horses. Makes me feel a little bit hurtful inside. Like there living the life I feel ill never get. It really hits you hard. Ever since I started riding, I did research 24/7. Horses, are my passion, literally my whole life. Sometimes I dream of the day I get one. Still dreaming on 🙍🏼‍♀️

Same! I’m pretty similar. I live in San Francisco...so land here is already very expensive (I mean out house is like 2M...and it’s a normal sized family house (not trying to brag just showing how expensive everything is here). The barn I go to is 125 for a hour long GROUP lesson...so I can only do 1 lesson and week and have been told I will never lease or own (as long as it’s my parents paying for it). I see so many people get horses and it makes me feel like I will NEVER get those thing. Luckily this Saturday I’m trying a new barn where I will get to ride twice a week...but still. I started riding when I was 8, I’m 13 now (but really only been doing weekly lessons for a year)(my first 4 years but bareback at a sleepaway camp, but I still learned ALOT from that). Anyways, I’m very glad I can ride but I totally get you!

I have a similar riding story to you and it gives me hope that I can possibly make it in the horse world. I just graduated high school, but I started riding around nine and did all of the western stuff. My parents bought me a little 15yo quarter horse mare that I produced myself and got to jump. Then they got me an ottb I definitely was not ready for but taught me tons. I never had a steady trainer, but had one that taught me an insane amount and I wished I was still training with her. My goal is to become a trainer and ride as many horses as I can, and I really resonated with your story. You are an idol I’ve really looked up to for a while, and I’m really thankful you made this video! I’m over in Iowa, but I really wished I was closer, let me know if you’re looking for a live in working student 😅!

As someone who has been on the verge of giving up on riding the past few months, this gave me a lot of hope :') I've had a very similar riding "journey" (lmao my first "horse" was a 2-month-old foal... talk about learning everything the hard way 😶) and most of the time I feel so lost and inadequate compared to people I've riden with because I've never had the finacial backing or consistent instruction to pursue anything more than what I've done. The past few months have been particullarly hard, and most days I don't even want to keep riding. Seeing someone who's not only had to learn every thing the hard way, but also remained so resilent after so much tragedy just.. really makes my heart full and fills me with a little more hope. Thanks for making this video Stephanie, you've given me a few more reasons to not throw in the towel just yet ❤

I can completely understand how difficult putting down your best friend is. I tried out a horse this month, and fell in love. He was super sweet nothing spooked him. He became my next best friend. The day we were going to buy him, we got the vets out for the vetting. He turned out to have a significant heart murmur. He had to be put down.
I am still super upset about it, and I didn't even fully own him. My thoughts and prayers go with you.

When I was 15 I was bought two wonderful horses but my mum was alcoholic and there was just no way of keeping them. Losing horses is so hard. I had to put down my heart horse Jack when I was 10. He got spooked at the boarding facility late at night and broke through the fencing and got hit by a car. We tried everything to save him, I was there when they had to put him down. Although I have moved on and have other horses I have yet to find a horse as amazing as him. He was only 8 would’ve been still here today.

My heart breaks for you. You lost your horse and your trainer. I am so sorry. I know as a kid, losing a horse is a devastating, heart wrenching process that is not fair. I lost my first horse when I was 8 and since she was a lesson horse, I found out when I showed up for my lesson. I wasn't sure I would ride again after that. I cried, I prayed, I asked for her back.
I have dealt with two more horses after that one who had to be euthanized and one who won't stop colicking for one reason or another. I am taking another break because it is so emotionally draining and hurtful when this happens. I feel hopeless. Stephanie, I am so sorry and my heart goes out to you. You have started so many horses and I'm sure your rough period after Big G, is something that would happen to a lot of us if we experienced that during such a milestone time in our lives. I'm glad you stuck with it. You participate in this sport and genuinely care for the animals which is why I do it too. I hope you have come to peace with this situation; you seem emotionally detached from it which is a good thing. I am glad to know that you are teaching littles to be like you.

Wow, I wish my parents would buy me a horse! 😂 I know that your parents buying you an inexperienced horse at such a young age worked out for you in the grand scheme of things, and it could’ve gone horribly, but that doesn’t stop me from wanting to train a horse!
I just went through losing a lesson horse that I rode, and that I was very close to. Luckily my trainer doesn’t sugarcoat things, and told me exactly what happened, why, and what’s going to happen next. Slowly I’ve come to understand that sometimes these things happen, especially when the animal has an underlying issue, which this horse had. He was an OTTB and his digestive tract aged too fast, and wasn’t strong enough to pull through a bad case of colic. I’m sorry that you had to see that, luckily, I didn’t have the choice to be there.
This video, all of your others, and you yourself have inspired me so much, I didn’t know how to do things, and move up the ranks until you made everything make sense. I literally want to become something very close to what you’ve become. You’re amazing! 😍❤️🤩💕
Also, this might not be a very popular video, but could you make a video on what to wear to different types of shows? Human, tack, and horse. I am a hunter, but I don’t show. I might soon though, and I kinda want to know from someone other than my trainer (who never gives a straight answer) what the difference is between hunter and jumper, and is a flat class different than an over-fences class? I’m just overall confused about shows, and I think that some other people are too. I’m also on the West Coast of the USA, so it will probably be a bit different from where you are, but I’ll be fine with FINALLY getting an answer. You don’t have you do it, of course not. Whatever makes you happy!
Love from the West Coast!!!! Hope you’re doing well ❤️❤️❤️

LoL your story when you are 9 is very familiar. My cousin and I rode my brother in law's sister's unhandled horse. She bought him unbroken and sent him to a trainer for 30 days. When she got this horse back he was missing front teeth, so the trainer wasn't nice to him. She rode him but not a lot. He would give her trouble. We rode him barebacked with only his halter.

When you have a mom you is a advanced rider there is no way you can get her to buy you a horse when you just started riding or even when you move up to ride the advanced horses at your barn

That is exactly how I learnt to ride I ride her pony and she gives me “private lessons” we are both 13 and every weekend I would go and ride except I went to pony club for one day and her Shetland was being sassy so I fell off and the instructor yelled at me so I have never been back 😐but now I have a Welsh pony and a thoroughbred and hoping to get another one for Christmas “ I’m begging my parents” I love hearing peoples stories 🙂

Hi. I watch your videos so much & love them. I want to lease a horse soon, I ride next week. I also want to become an equine surgeon when I grow up & want to incorporate horses in my life a lot. Thank u for your spirit & letting me thing your horses were mine.
P.S. I am begging mom mom to lease a horse. She understands why but it is lot of money plus I still need lessons so even more money.

I am sorry. At my barn we just lost a horse from that happening. The story goes that he was out in the field and got his foot stuck in the railing. The feeders saw him got him out and got him in. He was bleeding like crazy and the cut was so bad you could see his bone. So they got him on the trailer and took him to the vet. The vet said that he was in a lot of pain and will not be able to ride again. So she made the hardest Decision of her life. She put him down. It was the hardest thing to learn that. I learned it in the worst way possible. I really miss him. R.i.p tony a off the track thoroughbred.

I’m in the same scenario at the beginning because I got my horse that’s five and got a year training and I’m 11 but I’ve been riding for three years so I sort of know a lot I don’t know

    • @gachaeris9732
      @gachaeris9732 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Just saying getting a 5 year old that has a year of training at 11 years can be very dangerous especially when you’ve only been riding for three years
