Please note that these posts do NOT necessarily reflect the official forecasts of the National Hurricane Center (NHC), and should not be interpreted as such. While tropical storms exist in the Atlantic, official NHC information is available at www.hurricanes.gov. Please refer to the NHC when making decisions, and heed the advisories and evacuation statements of your local National Weather Service Office and emergency management officials.
Dr. Levi Cowan creates videos and blogs pertaining to tropical cyclones, primarily hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean. Posts occasionally concern other, non-tropical weather events around the world. Dr. Cowan has a Ph.D. in meteorology from Florida State University.
I find your information most reliable. I think it would be interesting to see a complete case study on this hurricane, studying its history from beginning to end, to include the severe flooding in the Appalachians. I think you are the only one capable of doing such a thing around here
Just upgraded to a category 3 with 120 mph winds...please everyone stay safe
NHC just issued an update now saying 125mph max winds. Looks like Helene is trying her hardest to break Cat 4
@@caffeinatedtrouble It's now a minimal Cat 4 (130 mph). Wouldn't be surprising to see it reach 140 mph by the time landfall occurs.
140/941 now
@@CxrsonYo It broke Cat 4 :(
These reports are the best!
Thank you !
Thank you Dr. Levi and everyone stay safe!
Hello Levi
I have been watching for you to come online I really do appreciate you.
Praying for all of us🙏
Have a bless evening Levi ❤
Thank you sir. You are a voice of calm.
Fort Myers, FL here stay safe everyone!!!
I'm in Lehigh, just lost power and the gusts are only 40-50. Hoping it's just a transformer and it gets back on today
Destin here... grey and rainy. Breeze is a blowing.
How bad is the surge?
I'm in Tallahassee. Stay safe yall.
Hope you're is a safe location! Sending prayers from central FL
Hoping the best for you!
You stay safe too!
Please stay safe everyone.
And thank you Dr Cowen, from south Mississippi.
My brother just sent me your link, Levi. Thank you for doing this. I'm right over the fl line in ga and I'm a lil freaked out
I've been listening to Levi's forecasts since he started this channel, you can trust what he says. In fact, it's the only source I use. During Irma I was following what Levi said and he was saying that we should go to a shelter in my area. I was ready to go to the shelter and my county's emergency management said that it wasn't necessary. We stayed home because of what the EM said and I regretted staying home, it was horrible in my area (Kissimmee) just like Levi had said.
Thank you
Just went cat 3 as this video dropped.
110 is still cat 2
@@zachary8257it’s 120 mph or 105 kt that’s cat 3
Yeah recon supports a cat 3 120 mph
Please don't eat the cats.
@@seeharvester Is that supposed to be funny?
It's officially a CAT4, Hunter aircraft has now find max sustained winds of 130mph (215kmh) valid for 620EDT
I'm guessing it'll have maximum sustained winds of 140 mph by the time landfall occurs.
Thank you very much ❤❤❤
There was coverage on the 6 pm ABC Orlando WFTV coverage with a reporter in St. Marks in the Big Bend area near expected landfall where Mandatory Evacuation had been ordered earlier today. There were people in homes & on docked boats who were refusing to leave. Sheriff's deputies were going home to home & checking all the boats, telling residents if they were refusing to evacuate, to take a permanent marker & write their full name & date of birth on their legs to make it easier to identify them after the hurricane 🌀 came through‼️Also to let their next of kin know that they were not evacuating so they wouldn't be surprised to receive notification from the authorities that they didn't survive the most powerful hurricane to hit that area since the 1850s 😢
I’m in Camden county Georgia, I can see some wind coming albeit it will be strong at night. Be safe!
THANK YOU!!
...From Gainesville with love
Thanks.
Thank you, Levi
Clearwater Beach here. Thank you for the update.
Also Clearwater. Stay safe near the water!! On a lighter note, I've heard this one and the last one ppl have seen surfers!
Great data! Stay safe friends and family in Florida and Georgia.
Dr. COWAN THANK YOU!
Mr. Tidbits is there a way ppl may contribute to your profession? You're the best at this, honestly.
I've been following Levi Cowan since 2009. He was incredible even before he started college! But he couldn't do what he does without NOAA and certain international scientific organizations and communities. NOAA needs to keep its funding. I'm usually disgusted by any political comments on this channel, so please forgive me for this: one critical way to contribute is to follow developments in our government that could affect NOAA, let your representatives in Congress know how you feel, and vote accordingly.
forevermorenon- There is a link just under the vid where he says you can support him.
I only discovered Levi 2-3 years ago here on YT, def. the best and most complete summarized and up-to-date hurricane coverage, not to mention he is very easy to listen to.
I have never seen any "political" comments on his vids, just positive ones from his fans. However, I do know who I will be voting for. NOAA is one government agency that DOES need to be funded, but there are many that do not.
The good news is,
this thing is still moving forward and has not turned or wobbled 🌀
if it suddenly stopped moving that would be a catastrophe ! ☝️🤠
A blustery 55 in FL Keys - 1520 hrs.
Thank you Dr. Cowan! You're explanations are excellent 🤩
Treasure hunting on the beach is about to improve.
Shark's teeth hunting too
The wind field from this storm is huge. The fact that even Miami is getting TS-force gusts is quite something. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it.
Seen a few 50 mph gusts here in NW Broward but only when a feeder bands rotates up from the south. We've had maybe two or three strong squalls push thru but these are very quick moving. In between its been dry and breezy with winds in the mid 20s.
I notice recently that the big bend region of florida or regions just outside of it are hit by quite a few storms recently,I think potentially Herlene,Debby just this year alone and Idaelia from last year.Keep safe everyone
In the Tampa Bay region.... I've noticed that too. I keep thinking it's coming to us and it narrowly misses. I've heard of some type of superstition ppl have around here but can't remember what it is. Just that it's spared us for a hundred years!
Lake city here. We are braced but I know ill be working all night and tomorrow too.
They say the water can get 15-20 feet high water going into top of Florida.
Im north of Tampa. Starting to get very windy at times
Thank you again. Such a blessing!
Thanks for the information. You are top notch.
I'm in Kissimmee and there's wind gusts but not bad (at least now at 4:25pm on Thu, Sept. 26).
I've been having a lot of work debunking conspiracy theories on the NC floods. You do mention the possibility of a lot of rainfall all the way into Georgia and the Appalachians, but from this video I take it that even you would have been caught by surprise by the extreme outcome. What's your analysis of the impact of Helene?
Also interested to know
Daytona Beach area just light rain here ☔ praying for everyone in the part of the storm 🌀thanks for the update🙏
I just lost power in Lehigh, FL (just east, inland of ft myers). We only getting small 50mph gusts with a couple outer bands -
Here in port Charlotte on the Cape Haze side lots of wind gusts. Hope its out of here soon. Just days from Ian anniversary. No thanks 😊❤
thanks!
Great video! Population counts in that area are quite low. But God Bless everyone in the path...
Helene is now Category 4 with 215 km/h winds. That's 130 mph for the Americans living in its path.
Cottondale FL, Jackson County FL 🐬
Thanks Levi! 💜🌀
Good luck from Ocala, Fl 😁
Let's goooooo tidbits time!
Lol right? Esp while we all still have power.
Nokomis (just north of Venice) getting strong TS winds with gusts and lots of rain now. Earlier today had winds but not much rain. Everything started escalating here as the storm passed north of our latitude. Very little rain or thunder up until this point. Good luck fellow Floridians.
Damn man sorry Florida but I’m so glad this thing isn’t coming to Louisiana my house came so close to flooding on the last one and another manager at work that lives by the canal got a bunch of water and sewage in her house.
Awaiting the arrival...been a very quiet day here south of Tallahassee. Many people are saying we are going to missed again. We shall see.
In north port 🙏🏼 so far so good
Why isn't the dry air from the low over MS being sucked into this storm?
PRAYERS 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
There are still people in mobile homes along the St. Marks River refusing to leave. There will be loss of life tonight.
Cat 4 now as the eye approaches land. Stay safe, everyone!
And promptly upgraded to category 3
Can’t click fast enough
I know, right? The news is nothing compared to these
I live near Savannah ga! Am I going to get hurricane winds gust ?
Im really worried about Georgia. We have Never had hurricane. We just have gotten tropical storm only.
They say its going to be catastrophic ❤
I think we'll be alright
@@deedlefish You will have a lot of yard debris. Count on it.
Are you in South Georgia?
Nice
Looks like it's going to miss us yet again. Levi, what keeps storm away from this particular spot? Is it the topography? Can't even get a rain band.
Do you mean Tampa Bay?
This aged badly...
PENSACOLA PRAYING FOR Y'ALL
Cat 4 now 8:20 edt.
Project 2025 is a conservative policy proposal that aims to significantly restructure the federal government. While specific details can vary depending on the version of the project, it generally proposes:
* Shrinking the federal government: This includes reducing the size of federal agencies, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which oversees the National Hurricane Center.
* Privatizing government services: Project 2025 often suggests privatizing some or all of NOAA's operations, including hurricane forecasting.
Critics of Project 2025 argue that these changes could jeopardize critical climate research and disaster preparedness efforts. Hurricane forecasting is a complex task that requires significant resources, expertise, and access to advanced technology. Privatizing these services could lead to a decline in the quality and reliability of forecasts, potentially putting lives and property at risk.
While Project 2025 has not been implemented, the debate over its potential impacts on hurricane forecasting highlights the importance of maintaining strong federal support for climate science and disaster preparedness.
They want to eliminate NOAA and also FEMA. Don't elect these idiots!
Most of the country is in drought, points north are in severe drought. Hope this storm helps ease some of this up.
Well....standing water isn't exactly ideal but...
What is brewing next week in the gulf according to your website? A monster😮😮😮😮
Seriously? EDIT went to his site and looked up upcoming storms. Saw several. Which one? it Def coming to the Gulf?
We have and will have more wind in St Pete than Tallahassee will have. It will be fairly calm in Tallahassee. Cedar Key, however, could see up to 84mph gusts around 11pm tonight, however. 55 mph wind speed.
Strong gusts in CF, some tree damage already
I noticed looking at the satellites around 1 pm CDT, that Helene emitted a shockwave, it was easiest to see on the water vapor. Seems like after this the storm had a large pressure drop. I last saw this with Ian in 2022. Do these shockwaves mean anything in particular, or are they just more visible due to larger storm mass and higher resolution imagery? My meteorology Alma Matar is FSU as well, and they got hit hard by tornadoes earlier this year. My heart goes out to everyone in this situation right now, always seems like there's gotta be one more hurricane "banger" as the season wanes.
Plenty of free sailboats will be on fb marketplace and Craigslist in the big bend area next month.
Hurricanes distribute wealth lol
😂
Well on that note.... my husband works on sailboats. So, if you have a "gently used" one in need of repair hit me up.😂😂😂
If is gonna be a cat 3, espect a cat 4.
Madison county , Fl
Just raining in Sarasota
Does anyone know how large the eye is?
🙏🙏🙏
Thanks Levi. I really hope the naysayers who were poopooing the early warnings on this storm stopped shooting off their mouths and actually started preparing. I'm amazed so many people said this was going to be "a big nothing burger" when meteorologists were warning that conditions were ripe for not only formation of a tropical system, but a major hurricane and rapid intensification. The size of this storm has taken a lot of people by surprise. Hoping for the best for all my friends in Florida and Georgia today. Take care!
People are going to keep saying nothing burger and when they cry to the Federal government for financial assistance they're going to be told they're getting Nothing, Burger.
4 or 5
Looks like we do this again in 8-10 dqys....:
Let's pray not❤
Where?
What is storm name behind it?

Looks like maybe somebody dropped some chemicals on it or something
Saint Petersburg here and is really bad

This hurricane looks as big as Katrina! 😮
It's giving me irma vibes
@@jenridge7768 I’m in northern Florida, close to the GA line in the path of the hurricane! This could be my last comment. 😞
@@alvaroq2024I'll speak of you

I have a question why is it when Florida get a a hurricane is cat 3 or 4 is catastrophic or whenever anyone else get it is not catastrophic i don't get it .this is not Florida first hurricane and it won't be the last
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... Yeah
@@neilpatrickhairless lol yeah what ???
People… get outta there PLEASE!
At this point, it's not safe to get out of anywhere. Unless you're traveling to a local shelter or neighbor down the street (esp in a trailer), IT IS TOO LATE. The best thing to do is prepare. It's VERY unsafe to travel. I'm on the west coast but South of the eye and it was bad this morning. Please don't travel.
@@LazySusan. true... but when I posted this 3 hrs ago, they could.
@@kathleencarpentier3397 I just wanted to make sure no one went out. Nothing against you whatsoever. There's probably lots of out of state college kids at FSU and I just don't want them to leave the house. I understand you had the best intentions. It's very bad just here in the Tampa Bay area. I can't believe we still have power.
@@LazySusan. many ppl are praying for Floridian's safety. Take care.
💯💯❤❤🙏🙏
Cat 3 Hurricane at 125
Tid
This thing is cat 4 at least
Not a fan of the term "Double Barreled" when describing this thing. 😬 Eeeek.... I think we should be fine where we are (just flooding). But concerned for you all up in Tallahassee. Stay safe.
Please join threads. We quit twitter months ago but want to keep up on the storm. We no longer have Twitter/X. Please add more socials!
I post my videos on Threads but it's tough to post on more than the 5 places I already do. I settled on X for some of my more frequent technical posts because that's where most of the weather community lives
@Tropical-Tidbits Thanks for another great video, Levi! I was tired of the same thing on local Orlando TV stations continuing coverage & came to TT where I can always depend on you for the most accurate info. Can't imagine all the beautiful big trees all around Tallahassee standing up to a Cat 4 or high Cat 3 hurricane‼️It's so beautiful up there! Praying 🙏 for all those who have & will be effected by Helene 🙏🤍✝️
@@Tropical-Tidbits thanks for all your hard work. I always come to you when there’s a hurricane.
Thanks for the video. Praying for everyone in the path of this storm. Hello friends. Every day we see more and more evidence that normal isn't coming back! Jesus Christ is! Get saved today! Read 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, Romans 10:9-10, Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 3:22-28, Romans 5:8-9, Ephesians 1:13-14. Rapture any day now! Come Lord Jesus! Amen!!!!!!!
