  • Splitting and combining is a great way to manage your hive population. In this video ISU Extension and Outreach Entomologist Randall Cass and Postdoctoral Research Assistant Ashley St. Clair demonstrate how to combine hives, do a walk away split and an easy split.

Oh my God best video I've ever seen on splitting and combining hives. Strait to the point and no BS. Thanks a million.

I live in the Pacific Northwest, zone 7a. I just had a queen die on one of my hives. Is it a good idea to combine in winter? Right now our daily highs are around 55 f. My plan would be to put the deep brood box on the bottom of the queen right colony and the super on top of the queen right colony, both separated by paper. This would keep the queen right colony together with two brood boxes on the bottom and two supers on the top. Should I combine them or just let the queenless hive die off over winter? Both hives are full of bees and winter stores.

Thank you for the great video. I have a weaker colony , western with 3 frames of bees, larvae and capped cells present so I know I have a queen. This weak hive has a queen that has been through 2 winters in Seattle. I just bought a Nuc with 5 frames full of bees and capped cells. Should I strengthen the weaker colony from the new nuc/ stronger hive? Thank you

My recommendation is to make sure that the weak hive still has a queen - eggs are a stronger sign of queen presence than capped brood. One way to strengthen the weaker colony would be to move brood frames from the strong colony to the weaker one.
