Her parents liked me her kid was nice and everything was going good and than one day I was helping her move her sister across town when she told me it was over. When I asked why she said two reasons..she was had been seeing an older guy (30) who made more money than I did at the time and was thus a better provider. The second reason was I worked too much and she wanted someone more available. After helping her sister move her stuff I drove away without making a scene and did not date a single mom again until I was 28. Married her and was with her for 9 years and divorced her. Now married to a women who has no kids and we have been together happily for 10 years and going strong.

@@theender664 Back in 1966, when I was four years old, my parents had a bitter divorce, and my
mother argued that she should have custody of us kids. My father asked how she would support three kids, and she replied, “I’ll get a job.” To which my father retorted, “who’d hire you?” At that time my father was an engineer working at GE in the Plastics division, the very same division Jack Welch came up through to eventually become CEO. Well, my mother did win custody, as was the norm in that era, and my father was ordered to pay $60 per week in child support ($20 per kid). In the years that followed, with just her high school diploma, my mother took all manner of jobs, anything she could get. She cleaned houses, sold Avon, worked in the office pool for Berkshire Life Insurance, decorated wedding cakes, hung wall paper, the list goes on.
And then one day, in 1972, with her name in the files of Kelly Girl (the old name for Kelly Temporary Services) she got called up to fill in for a secretary who was going on maternity leave. A six week assignment, secretary to a technician, at GE Plastics Division. She reluctantly took the assignment, knowing she’d be passing my father in the hallways. But kids gotta eat.
Six weeks goes by and the woman she was subbing for decides not to return, to stay home with her new child. They gave the job to my mom full time.
Six months later her boss, the technician, gets a promotion. GE had a policy of hiring from within, and when they asked him who in the department should replace him in his technician role, he said, give the job to my secretary, she already knows it. And so they did, and saved money in the process when she refused to have a secretary of her own.
Over the course of the next 9+ years she rose through the ranks, her and her high school diploma, to a marketing engineer role, a higher rank than my father, with more responsibility and more pay. She didn’t mind so much passing him in the hall anymore.
And at ten years and a day, having shown him exactly who’d hire her, she took her partial pension and joined two other engineers to go off and start up a new company.
Equality of opportunity allowed my mother to rise beyond anyone’s expectations at a time when women were seen as second-class citizens. And by her example she showed her three boys that women are fully equally capable to tackle any task or career in which they apply themselves.
Oh, and she never asked for a cost of living raise to that, wholly inadequate, child support. That never entered her mind.
So why tell this story? Because money was a daily concern in our household as I grew up. I learned every facet of how to save it, stretch it, grow it, and what to spend on and what to not spend on. All these years later, with just a high school diploma, I’m a multimillionaire. Thanks for leading the way, mom.
She wasn't horrible at all. Just wise.

The first time I was young and dumb and thought it was just me but I tried again and it was the same. @SpaghettiandSauce But that is the case with most women anyway, not just with her or with single moms. It's never about _you,_ it's about what you can do for her and the very moment your usefulness is over, so is the marriage or the relationship. Hell, this is even the true reason why a man can't have a platonic relationship/friendship with a woman. It's not because men always still want to sleep with female friends, it's because men will sooner or later learn the hard way that they will be (ab)used as service provider and that the very moment he is in need of her help, she will vanish from his life.

I remember hearing this on television years ago about a 7yr old boy who hated the fact that his mother divorced his father and married a new man who the boy didn't like. This mischievous boy tried to rectify this by pinching his arms and deliberately slamming one of his arms with a door to put bruises on himself to show his father when he had visitation time with his son. The boy rolled up his sleeves and told his dad this is what mom's new husband did to me. Well the boy's father is now serving life in prison for killing his mother's new husband and after hearing all the evidence in court and after the boy fessed up in court as to what really happened. Daddy must feel like a fool.

But when it comes to discipline and setting boundaries it's always "you're not my father:. I just worry about the exceptions a little. I'm sure there's a small minority of single mothers who got that way because their man died trying to save an old lady from a burning building or something. Genuine widows don't deserve to be lumped in with the rest of them.
Sadly, I'm not sure I'd date one with that life's story out of concern that it would be a lie.

@@ailius1520 There are exceptions to every rule. But there is a reason something is a rule and something else is an exception. You have to be able to take in all the information and use sound judgment before connecting yourself to someone. My ex-wife cheated on me, ruined my credit, funneled money to her secret account behind my back, walked away and left me in a ton of debt before I even understood what happened. 8 years later, you couldn't recognize her from any other single mother. Most women have a hard time being accountable for their actions. Ex-wife is still out there acting like her divorce just "happened" and she is a good catch waiting for the right man. She is a demon. It is up to her suitor to find out the truth and not just jump in because he believes blindly that she is the exception.

Let me share one facet of dating a single mom that they never tell you: I recently broke it off with a single mom I'd dated for four years, and had bonded pretty deeply with her daughter. I took her to school functions, taught her to ride a bicycle, and paid financially for so many things-not bio Dad, not Mom, me. Despite this, I got told multiple times some version of "you're not her father, she doesn't have to listen to you." You're not Dad. You have no rights, and any relationship you build with her child(ren) can be taken away no matter how much you've invested emotionally or financially. It tore me to pieces. I'll never date a single mom ever again, knowing that if things don't work out I get double the pain from the breakup; it's not worth it. Learn from my experience, gentlemen, unless you like being a disposable ATM with zero parental rights should things go south.

First of all, you chose every action which has nothing to do with the mom. Secondly, the type of person you chose in terms of the things they said to you is also a reflection of you. You have a real cautionary tale in terms of dynamics dating a mom, but you chose who you chose and that's on you. It doesn't reflect every other single Mom. Choose someone that understands your value.

Basically oh, you have no control over the kids. Kids come first and the kids were allowed to misbehave and you can't do anything about it.
If you form an emotional attachment to the kids, you have no right. You can raise the kids from the age of two years old t o the age of 15 and then never see them again.
And the likelihood of second relationships failing is much higher than the likelihood of first relationships failing and women are more likely to end the relationship. So you basically giving yourself and over 50% chance that you're going to have your heart ripped out after a few years of misery.
And if she has kids by multiple men than you really need to watch out because she's going to cheat on you. I saw that happen with two friends during my life.
And it's very likely they will never love you for you as a person but only you as a provider for their financial needs. So they're much more likely to leave you if you fall on Hard Times.

I read “I am unwilling to recognize my relationship mistakes/poor choices because something great (kids) came out of it”. I love kids, I really do. But unless you specifically planned for their father to not be in the picture then something(s) went wrong and failing to examine that means a huge learning experience is lost.

My dad married a single mom. In that time he showed this women so much love and patience that it made me angry because he showed none of this for my mom. I grew to know her for 10 years. I grew up with her 11 month old child and I love him like a brother because.... he is my brother. For 8 years my family fought against his father who molested him for full custody. 8 YEARS!!! After my dad sold all his assets and blead tooth and nail to provide for his wife and provide freedom to a child that shared zero blood to him they won! Finally they could live a life were they could just be a family and it looked like it was going to be smooth sailing. But 2 weeks after the court case was done she ran away with her son. I haven't seen them since.... my brother calls me on messenger now sad that he is alone and legally we can't do anything and our heart aches. So remind me again on the advantages of marrying a single parent? I can't find one.

I dated 2 single mothers back in the day. The Simping Days. Never again. There is always drama. The drama isn't always the kids or her- it's the baby daddy who feels territorial even though he's supposedly "Moved On". The worst part is that she entertains it because he's left an emotional imprint on this woman. She talks bad about him all the time but entertains his shenanigans.
