I was confused when they said they had another engine, then proceeded to build Up a separate engine, with apparently different length pushrods? Having a back up engine normally means it’s ready to go, not a block and components that needs to be assembled at 2 AM while experimenting with seemingly random changes. The oil system modifications makes sense, but whose bright idea was it to change the pushrod length to the point where the engine wouldn’t even make compression?
Anyways, impressive work all around in spite of the confusing aspects. Why such a short time to get things ready? Maybe they just got the idea to compete in pikes Peak a few weeks before the event? With all that stress, rushed and exhausted crew, I would have waited till next year and done it with plenty of practice and confidence. Also a few miles on the odometer/racetrack so you know it’s reliable?
That’s probably why I’m not setting any records LOL
I’m not at the end of the video yet, maybe they just had such a crazy and great idea that they win in spite of all the hardships. Can’t wait to find out! If they don’t do it this year, I’m excited to see what happens next year.

Yeah. I've been in that situation before, only with race boats. There is no substitute for getting the build done about a month before the event, and having time to work out the bugs. Don't try to build the fastest machine possible the first time out. Just build something that will go the distance.

@Karl with a K Jesus, youre delusional. In order to amass the wealth needed to fund this, hard work is imperative. The idea that they must not have worked hard because they now have time to live their dream is flawed in every possible way. One that has been able to collect wealth, if over one or multiple generations, adds more value to society than the average worker. Considering that hes not multi billionaire out of touch with life, the most likely conclusion on how wealth was amassed is through entrepreneurship. It adds to society in various ways, ranging from innovation, more tax income to the government, to creating workplaces, most likely decreasing unemployment to an extent. There are so many factors you refuse to consider due to your narrow view dictated by jealousy and a lack of understanding.

What a joke! I’ve never seen such ignorance from what are supposed to be professional car guys. The first engine failure with them wondering why the engine wouldn’t turn over was ridiculous. Anyone with any experience would’ve figured right away that it was major internal damage. Trying to turn it over with a 5 foot cheater bar was one of the dumbest things I’ve seen. If you can’t turn it over with a standard 1/2 inch breaker bar then it should be obvious. Oil starvation would also be an obvious reason on any engine in those conditions. I mean it’s crazy they wasted all that time and money with such little knowledge. And then the second engine had no compression because of the wrong pushrods? That’s even more ridiculous! Who builds an engine and then doesn’t at least turn it over by hand to verify it turns over with compression? Unbelievable! I can’t believe the stupid mistakes that would only be made by complete amateurs. I can’t believe the huge waste of money and time because of the lack of experience or just plain ignorance. WOW! What a disgrace! Might as well have been the three stooges in there.

it is a very good looking car for something like this. my thought , the oil pan that was taken off looks like it holds 2 quarts at best. the narrow channel in he pan looks to be good at keeping oil where it needs to be in turns, but not hills. i've only had one diesel an 01 duramax which takes 2.5 gallons of oil. with that tiny oil pan, i really think that the engine just does not have enough capacity to keep constant oil flow. hope they get it figured out.

Being well versed in powersmoke, powerjoke,powernope/hope 6.0ltr diesel engine: WHY? I cannot fathom the choice to use that engine. They're horribly and notoriously prone to failure for so so sooooooo many reasons. I truly hate these engines and that is because I've worked on them for ,days, weeks and now years. They are the worst, bar none.
Cummins, duramax (peppered with their own issues) hell a little Gallumparo Isuzu are all better engines. Moving on from the "why" I cannot help but laugh and feel bad for you guys all at once. "Electrical problems " he said..... SHOCKER. THE FICM,TCM,ECM coms and system are so fkn awful. That said and moving forward, you guys built a cool car. It could be FAST ASF if you ever get the powerjoke kinks worked out and I hope you do. Best wishes, Godspeed, & Good luck.

15min in; Wow, it truly is a Powerstroke build. It doesn't work. Should've used an actual commercial Diesel, like a Cummins. Seriously, outside of F-650s, F-750s, and Blue Bird Schoolbuses, does the Powerstroke have any other medium-duty truck applications? Meanwhile the same Cummins engine you find in Dodge Rams, is in Freightliner medium duty trucks, Farm Tractors, Bulldozers, Backhoes, Excavators, there might even be a forklift with the current model engine, etc. Different sized injectors and turbos per application, but still the same base motor. Like there's a reason people use Cummins Diesels for their monster builds, and it's not Mopar.

  • @daviddroescher

I'll start with I am thoroughly enjoying the impressive show you put on with frank. Now the car is totally together you can focus on the motor. And ther other weak leaks that show up in the long chain of success. Only lady luck can say whether you are hafe way or just around the corner.
Needs 1 more smaller stage of turbo for down low/ mid range rpm. Guessing ~1000hp 2k tq a pair of Garrett g660s =1 s375
also a manual valve body or Allison 1000 medium duity programs for better rpm control. ( tcc locked at 25mph unlock at 15 it held my 7k lb ¾t coming down pikes peak in manual mode only using the brakes in the hairpins up top)
Long time on the brakes then bang? Data logs? banks idash or similar if your current ecm dose not already do it.

Well now I feel like a challenge has been issued.
I was already planning on building a dual rear wheel '71 - '74 Plymouth Satellite, and since I wanted to stay Mopar I was going to go Cummins, but now I feel like I need to pay some homage to the R32 - R34 Skyline and make it AWD, as well.
The extra width should provide plenty of room for aero improvements. Maybe I'll make it look like a hypothetical 1971 Plymouth Superbird. Dually. Diesel. Yeah, OK, that one petered out pretty fast at the end... ;)

I feel like the driver can´t properly judge when to brake, like he brakes waaay before the turn and goes around corners in a way that feels as it´s his first time to the track. I am probably wrong but I just feel this way. Also HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO BREAK A DIESEL ENGINE? those things are by design much stronger than gasoline engines lol. I guess if you had prepared the car properly at least you would have arrived at the finish line. At least you now have experience in what not to do xd, next time will surely be better ;)

What are the specs of that Engine.
I find it a bad choice for chasing a record.
For a race car It very heavy of an engine.
Something like Mercedes OM606 With a DieselMaken Tune 500Hp 750 Nm torque at half the weight would kill that on the track unless its a 800-900 Hp tune.
Also its a Straight six 3 liter has unrivaled reliability and Gets to 500hp on Stock internals. Much more narrow and much more reliable than a powerstroke.

Hopefully the next motor won't be another 6.0 PowerJoke, knowing it's lack luster reputation. How about the 6.4 PowerStroke, or will it not fit? If that's the case then what's wrong with a Cummins? IDK but for God sake damn near any diesel out there is a better choice than a 6.0 Powerstroke...

Good documentary, one which begs several questions: #1) Why the 6.0 versus the 6.7 chosen? #2) Was the latest 10 speed transmission used? #3) With a massive an engine up front, and in a 2wd vehicle, understeer will be a major issue. So, why wasn't a mid engine design chosen? #4) Has the cause of failure at the same point been identified? If yes, WHAT is it? (Given failure occurred at the same location, one might guess that the air pressure/density is a factor affecting fuel pressure/delivery or a MAP programming issue.)

An amazing car. The crew must have had the most exhausting fun ever to build and run this. But the car looks like they applied the Idea of the engineers of the 1989 Audi 90 IMSA GTO. Becasue they had to stick to a "Mass Produced Car" and found that by regulation they only need the roof panel to be original like the series. What I want to say is that this GTR does not look like a GTR, except the grill.

I might be even more frustrated than you guys.
Remember that to finish first you first have to finish.
Your weak link is obvious. Choose a proven power plant. Banks Duramax or OM648 will get you what you're seeking. Would already have done. Either way, for the twists and turns of pikes peak, you're boosting way too late and over fuelling most of the time. Very much looks like a tractor pulling setup. All that smoke should tell you that it's been done way wrong. The stresses the engine internals are made to endure in its current setup are simply unsustainable as you have proven yourself. Change to a different setup or change the engine type, ideally both.

So I don't know about anything prior to this video..but... the issues about going uphill instead of "flat" like a drag racer to me doesn't seem as much of an issue as Up AND Left and right. I've raced cars at PIR with looong sweepers that, if you starved it of oil, you were gonna lunch it. Do you have a telemetry of oil pressure and temp? Did you, or were you allowed to, use an accusump? Did you, or are you allowed to, use that with/and/or/without a dry sump? Was the 2nd failure also oil starvation? Anyhow if you solve those problems and retain sponsorship/funding for next year you'll whack the record so hard it won't know what hit it.
