I noticed that you used a whistle to alert people on the ground that you are landing! First time I noticed that. I think you have sold me on this device. It’s compact and apparently very well thought out. Very nice. I look forward to your future videos when we all come back to life. Take care.
Thanks! Yes, flying has definitely been postponed for a time. Besides most trail sites and Torrey being closed, not great to all cluster at a launch site no matter how much we think we can social distance. The whistle rule at Torrey is as fickle as the weather. On the orientation video and on the posted rules outside the clubhouse, it says that a whistle is to be used when launching, when RC's are present, going through the "window" and when landing to alert other pilots and people on the ground. It is a SAFETY tool. But look at any videos and you'll be challenged to hear anything except maybe when RC's are present because they get pissed if you don't and they will let you know. And you do not want to get hit by one of those (they can get very large). Right after two pilots collided last year, the rule was really enforced for maybe a month or two, and then seemed to be slowly forgotten again. I even had an argument with an instructor that couldn't understand why I WAS blowing my whistle! When I brought up their video and printed rules he just kind of glared at me, said it was only for RC's and walked away. He is not an instructor at this time so I don't know what the students are being told now. Over the last 2=3 years, I have seen two pilots collide at landing, near misses, wings not coming down when someone is landing, tourists being scared and a few barely missing pilots when crossing the pathway (they cannot hear our wings!) OK, so I guess this is a bit of a rant :-) BUT I was a CFI for a time and safety was all about not allowing a chain of bad events to even get started. And skills has never completely prevented an accident from happening. Sadly, the general aviation pilots I knew that died where all experienced pilots and the accidents were all due to complacency at the wrong time. The last time I flew Torrey there were about 10 pilots in the air including tandems and I'd be hard pressed to say I heard any consistent whistling on take off, landings, going through the window, or even when the RC's were there. So, I just go ahead and blow my whistle just in case it does make another pilot, RC'er or student look up and know that I am there and possibly save either of us from a bad day. On a more positive note, I will definitely look forward to more thermal time with the Syride vario! Thanks once more...and sorry again for the rant!
Nice review (and the other in-depth on the table review) thanks... I'm curious, the whistle I hear at 1:33, is that a warning to others that you are landing?
Yes...it is supposed to alert people (tourists and visitors walking around) and other pilots on the ground that you are in the "window" and when crowded one can even yell "landing". BUT this has become very lax over time and even when crowded it has become rarely enforced or utilized..that is until there is an accident. It can get very crowded at Torrey (especially when the tandem pilots are giving rides) and something to be very aware of as pilots and wings fly around very silently! However, the most recent accident happened when there were only 2 pilots in the air! Never assume you are alone up there or that people see you trying to land...at least at Torrey. Thanks for watching!
Is Tory staying open? Either way, sorry to hear you're making the choice to stand down for a while. Only 3 days in, I couldn't take another day of the 4 walls and the boob tube, so I got in about a :90 min beach flight. A steady 10 knot laminar onshore, allowed for a minimal risk takeoff and landing. I think a lot of people that were out, were just seeking something normal and familiar. I waved to hundreds of people today (a way higher percentage than usual) as I flew along the Florida coast. I met several others, while keeping our social distances of course, that were just emotional train wrecks. People need normalcy. Stay safe.
Don't know if Torrey is doing anything different. Last I heard they were business as usual. I made the decision myself as I have to also think about my wife and co-workers. It's OK really because I can still hike, bike, run and go for a hike and fly. I plan on kiting at the parks when I can. Right now many people are having incredible disruption in their lives including illness and worse. I hope the US can escape with minimal disruption but I fear we are about 2-3 weeks behind Europe. Hope that's not the case. But for now, I'm OK with a new normal for a time if it means less overall illness. I also fear for doctors, nurses, and other health workers as they are at the front lines of this. If they are overwhelmed or become ill, then they may not be available to help those most in need. As ER and medical people always say, "prepare for the worst and really hope for the best". Believe it or not, I really am an optimist. Take care!
@@loums52 Sadly, I am still using varios that don't let you change the battery. It's annoying that we have no other options. These days they sell us electronics for $400 and we end up tossing them in the garbage. I am afraid to buy an $800 GPS Vario. I don't fly cross country, so I don't need one. I am trying to find a vario that will allow battery replacement. Blue Skies!
I have three varios: Flymaster( No gps), Ascent (screen went blank) waste of $350. and I tossed the little blue one, name unknown, in the garbage after the battery died.

I have come to dislike GPS Varios that won't allow a battery change.
Thanks for watching. What have you been using?
