  • Hi friends - updating this caption almost 10 years since we published this video. This was a video we had to complete as part of a course project in our first year of social work. The requirements made this video very short. Please be kind in the comments as this was likely our very first role play of our bachelor of social work, and these two social workers are very skilled social workers today 10 years later :) I would opt to take this video down, but it seems it may be used somewhere as part of a courses content? So I am just adding some context - good luck in your studies!

Some of the parts in this video are really great. It could have been better if the social service worker could validate the client's feelings especially right after the confidentiality part.

Interviewer seems like she is rushing through the assessment. I would feel as though she’s just checking boxes and not concerned about my well-being.

I am just in school for SSW but what I notice is the lack of empathy from the social worker. The clients feelings were never validated, or heard.

I feel as though when constantly asking, “is there anything else “, it can make the other person feel rushed. Preferably, I think the social worker should have asked the client in advance what were her areas of concern and what she hopes to achieve from her visit. Additionally, I would have elaborated more about what options were available. Lastly, I would have said more to make her feel encouraged... Although the social worker was very friendly, I observed little effort to develop a client-worker relationship. It was more service oriented (informational). Was her assessment standard practice, or are there various ways of conducting one depending on the agency or unique circumstances?

yes, I agree with you because I would have asked the client what was her concerns. It is important to build a relationship with the client and the Social worker should listen to the client. The Client repeats" does not want to go back to her sister house she wants to be in a all girls home permanently.

Personally I think a great social worker should be calm and speak calmly all that hyper over the top energy would make me angry calm down ask questions slower there's way too much stimulation in this video.
SW should have made the call for housing also it felt like the SW was trying to get her numbers in for the month. Had that been my SW I would have walked out feeling hopeless. She was so rushed "ok right great we can get together next week c-ya bye" back to my fancy life anything else you want to talk to about
Client: I dont feel well I might ..
SW: Good we can make a DR appt female DR is there anything else
Client: I need to get out of my sist...
SW: we will help you no worries ok bye
    That was bad

I felt similar, she jumped up and tht startled me, especilly if its the first time a client is meeting you and you've protective about your space.

Overall it was a great interview with snippets of areas needing improvements. it was rushed, lack of empathy, no warmth or comfort. Seemed like the social worker was there but really didn't want to be there.

The interview was rushed with lack of empathy. She did a great job identifying client’s immediate needs however I did not see a connection develop between CM and CL. I heard the strenghths based perspective used once maybe twice, when the CL had been doing great managing her sobriety throughout all the obstacles and challenges without support.
CL mentioned struggling with social anxiety, she seemed nervous during the interview-speaking quietly and she was taking short quick breaths and she seemed fearful of where she was going to live. These life situations are predictors of what could become depression and anxiety if she is not already struggling with these. I would have like to see CM ask more about how she was feeling to assess need for mental health services. MH services would be a great support for her to help her navigate through her challenges.
