I was blessed to have a grandmother who supported herself and two kids by becoming a “women’s’ tailor”. I would also add “designer”. Being tought by her and having been in 4H I learned a lot of this in elementary school. However, that said I admit I know I had a great advantage. Thanks so much for teaching this, Crystal! There were a few points I had forgotten so I am glad for the reminder! Great job, my dear!
Great video Crystal! Thanks! Never planned to make wearables because i was concerned about how to make it big enough being i am a big girl. Now i may give it a go!
I’ve been trying for a looong time to get started on a sweater, but I had no idea how to make a pattern I like work to cover my big girl size. I have hope!
I was so afraid for some reason to make a cardigan. I finally decided to try it. I choose the ugliest color green yarn that you’ve ever seen, because never in a million years did I think that it would turn out perfect. Well guess what. I took my time & followed the directions, and it came out perfectly. I encourage you to give it a try. Just don’t make the same mistake that I did. Plan on your cardigan/ wearable to come out perfect & use a beautiful yarn or at least color that you love. I now have a perfect sweater that I will never wear because of my color choice. I put so much time into this piece that I literally put a stitch marker in every stitch of the cuff to make sure that my stitches lined up. Go for it , pick a color that you love, and wear your beautiful crocheted piece proudly.
While I love making hats and blankets, I really want to make my own sweater, but had no idea how to fit it to myself. This is brilliant, Crystal ! And just because there are many other crochet youtubers, your amazing skills are a blessing to all and you will always be needed. You're a cool, sweet lady and thank you for everything. 😎❤
Hi Crystal! I've never made a wearable other than a cocoon cardigan granny square out of fear of it being too hard and you have made it seem so much easier! Thank you so much! 💖
To do such a personal video must have felt a little... vulnerable (?) As women we are told so much about our bodies: gain a pound, lose one (as you very sadly know). I'd just like to say that I am sitting here - so incredibly grateful - I follow a *woman like you Crystal.
No wonder it's such a pain for you to figure out sizes for all bodies. You explained it perfectly. Very informative. Luckily, I'm your size so I can skip the math. Yay! 🤩
Wahoo!!! I’m first!!! So kind of you to do this for us! This just proves what we’ve always known, you’re a crochet magician!! I love this idea- this way we can get more of your patterns- taking the responsibility of adjusting the size on our own- I’d rather have your designs- and adjust
Thank you very much, Crystal. You made so much sense, I never would have thought about the drop shoulder and cuff in the calculations. I will do a smaller version for my granddaughter's dolls to give me the practices until I get the maths right. You are so perfect and never put yourself down. My old school teacher used to tell me off with negativity always remember, you are perfect in your own way and you can only do your best best. So keep doing what you do you are PERFECT XXX
Hi Crystal. Thank you so much for this. Once again, stepping out of the box and filling a need I haven't seen anyone else meeting. Very empowering. Teaching us to fish for ourselves! I am encouraged to give this system a go. I'll be watching your upcoming sweaters to find one to make.
Thank you so much for this video. This is exactly what i been needing. This was alot of help because every cardigan I've made has either come out too small or too big becausei just followed the pattern. I'm short and chunky and the patterns don't fit me. With the information you give in this video i feel confident i can now custom one to fit me. Thank you!!
Wearables have been the forbidden fruit for me. I just have no understanding of how you make all the pieces come together and I didn't have the energy to "eventually figure it out". Thank you. Thank you for putting yourself out there to try to help us all take a bite of the apple! :)
THIS is what i've been looking for for ages! It's going to make it so much easier for me to tailor patterns to my unique body or make a design of my own. Thank you Crystal, this might be the most useful video of yours for me. Much appreciated!
Crystal! Thank you so much for this. It helped me so much to understand what needs to be done to size something for me! I so appreciate your explanation! You are AMAZING (whether you believe it or not, that is how I see you)!
Wow 🤯! You mean I have been too afraid to try crocheting a wearable and it was this simple. I would only steer towards a written pattern/tutorial in fear that my garment wouldn’t fit. Thank you so very much for being a true teacher of crochet. I love all of your videos and even answer/ laugh along with you. 😂 My fur babies even like to watch when they hear your fur babies chime in during the tutorials. I can’t begin to say thank you for all of the hard work, dedication, and positive support you’ve been able to show so many! ❤
Crystal, this is so kind and generous of you to take the time out to explain how we can customize our project and how to take the measurements. I understood what you explained pretty well. You are a wonderful teacher. Your encouraging personality and your patience is remarkable ❤❤I’m a seasoned sewer from 9th grade (many moons ago)!!! The very 1st thing I made was a lined suit w/ zipper, skirt, and jacket. Back then you could made your own buttonholes.I took lessons and learned on my mother’s old Singer sewing Machine. I love cardigans, just like my early sewing days I practiced. Now I WANT TO CONQUER THIS. I AM GOING TO GET IT. THANK YOU SO MUCH CRYSTAL. You really are a beautiful person 😊. gayle
You did a great job explaining this Crystal, thank you!!! You teach us to have confidence in what we are making, please give yourself that same grace-you’re a wonderful teacher💜💜💜
You're amazing!!! I'm new to crocheting and I just absolutely love the way you teach and I love that you give exact instructions for beginners like me thank you 🧶🧶🙏🏻
Crystal, I’m trying not to purchase anymore yarn until I use most of what I already have. So I’ve been resizing some of your tutorial patterns based on the yarn weight I have on hand by playing around with the hook size or adding or subtracting the stitch multiple. I have crocheted for many many many years but only a few clothing pieces. This past year or so I’ve made at least 6 or more. Your tutorials are incredibly helpful and your positivity inspiring. When you say “I know you can do it…”, it’s the encouragement needed to challenge myself. When you offer suggestions on where and how to change up a pattern it helps to bring out creativity. This additional information helps to put words and order to what’s going on in my head while altering patterns. When I diagram a pattern it’s easier for me to follow, it’s more like half diagram and half my crochet shorthand 😊. In other words thank you!
Crystal! You have explained this so perfectly! I'm so excited to put this information to use. I wish I could find the words.. you have opened up a whole new world of creating for me! First you taught me crochet way beyond what I figured out on my own. Second, and most important maybe, you made me believe that I CAN DO IT even when it is intimidating.. now you have handed this tutorial to me and I'm a way that I easily understand!!! There is no way to thank you enough. You are an awesome lady and a wonderful teacher 🤎💚🤎
I was a dressmaker in London before the kids. You got it all dead right!!!! I never liked how the printed patterns turned out. Some of my designs were good some awful, but I did learn Thanks Crystal, you made it so easy. Regards from London
I can understand completely what you are teaching me and I am 76. You got this girl. Thank you so much. I have made two of your sweaters and working on 2 more. One for my 17 year old grandson which I may rethink after this. I am on the back panel but I may be an inch off. I will see.
Sometimes it's easier to do it than say it, but you did a good job getting the concepts across. Now your beginner crocheters will need to see each style (pullover, open front) in action with the drawing to help put it all together. You're good at this - those numbers make my head spin! I'm so glad I can just do it and not think about anything more than how many inches around I want to make it.
Thank you for showing us how to do measurements on clothes. Love your channel , you explain everything so clearly . Five years ago I found your channel and all your tutorials. ❤️
This is AMAZING!. All the things I've always wondered and spent hours looking for right here in one place and explained just how I can understand...THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART. The creative wheels are turning !!!!
Crystal I said 2024 is the year I am going to start making wearable for myself & others 👍🏻Thank you for trying to make creating & adjusting items to fit our bodies! ❤️❤️
This is a very helpful tutorial. I have learned these things over the years by watching your tutorials, sometimes multiple times. I still get it wrong sometimes, but most of the time, my wearables fit now. I attribute that to your teaching skills and watching so many of your videos.
Thank you Crystal! This will come in handy , soon, for me, since my sister asked me to make her a sweater . It’s my first attempt making a cardigan . 😊🧶🙏💫
Thank you, Thank you. You explained it perfectly. I’m a Big Woman, my bust is 44” and you explained it very well. I would add stitches and hopefully it would work. Now I can actually see how to do it. Your the best in what you can do with yarn.
Thank you for this very helpful tutorial. I know you arent comfortable with having your measurements out there but i truly appreciate you helping us to work out how to measure.
I like your method Crystal!!!! It is sooooo important to know the size you should be crocheting the clothing items you crochet...I learned the hard way. Thank you for sharing!!!❤❤❤
Oh Crystal. Your tutorials are so valuable. This tutorials will open all of the people eyes to learn how to make any garment in reality. Thank you. Blessings
What a great teacher/crochet mentor you are. Thank you. I have been crocheting for 55 years and never made a sweater. Now I can give it a try!! Thank yoy!!
Although I am very bad at math, yet if I greatly apply myself to this teaching it will open a whole lot of opportunities for designing my own patterns. Thank you for sharing this because actually you don’t have to but being a good teacher, you do. To each his own. It all goes to how much we as individuals want to learn. A lot of note taking for sure. And for me personally going through this teaching countless times until I “get it. Thanks
I so needed this, because I've had to frog a whole sweater and wanted to cry because it was way too big. Any wearable training you can provide is greatly appreciated by me. I normally just follow the size I think I need with the pattern measurements given but I had the one I had to frog and one that the sleeves look like they are for a gorilla they almost hang to the floor. Thank you. You are my absolute favorite teacher! 🍎🍎
😮Great video you explained it clearly what you did and how you got your sizes. Explained positive ease clearly and the fact that you need to leave a neck opening and leave room for ribbing. Thank you for this awesome tutorial.
I can't wait to make a custom fit wearable. I'm going to watch this video everyday to keep it in my TH-cam library. I'm working on next year's Christmas blanket gifts, and then I will make something for me. Good job Crystal. I hate math, but I understood what you said.
Crystal, I've been crocheting since I was 9 years old . I never crocheted tops, did everything else. Thank you, I learned something to night. Thank you. I've been thinking of crocheting tops. I hate the stores saying one size and its not. Thank you. You have explained how to figure it out easy. Great teacher. Thank you very much, Crystal. Oh, I thought you were about 5 ft 9 inches tall. I'm 5ft 1in
Thanks Crystal. I have been crocheting since I was 9 years old but no one had ever explained this to me before. Now I can make things for my granddaughters as well as myself. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
This is so good! Thank you for this… I’m just starting to really into crocheting clothes and not everyone does a general sizing. They crochet for themselves and leave us to figure it out. This helped me with a pattern I just found to try so thanks again! You’ve taught us to fish so we can eat for life, Crystal!!!❤
THANK YOU ☺️THANK YOU THANK YOU ☺️THANK YOU THANK YOU ☺️THANK YOU 🙌☺️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I really appreciate the time you spent to explain this! It’s extremely helpful!! 😊❤❤
I found your explanation extremely helpful. I had never heard of positive ease. Thanks for this video. I will be using this when I make my next wearable.
Thanks for taking the time to explain how to modify for bigger or smaller. My sisters will enjoy that since some of the things I made for them were way to big
Crystal, thank you for this video ❤! I wish I would have had this video a long time ago, it would have saved me stress and time. Now I feel much better about creating and tailoring wearables to my body. I can't thank you enough for taking the time to explain😊. Have a wonderful day 💗
Thank you so so much for this!!! You explained this so well! And i loved that you had multiple examples! You are an awesome teacher Crystal! I measured and drew my little stick person just like yours! Now on to make the Grandpa sweater!!! Thank you!!
WOW that made sense to me and I don't make wearables yet. However, I did many years ago make clothes and had to think about the positive ease. Good job explaining the "how to".
Hi Crystal Thank you for your wonderful explanation of measurements. I understood everything in your explanation. I just watched it now, however I will rewatch this video tomorrow so that I can write down the actual details of your explanation. I truly greatly appreciate that you not only took the time to explain how to measure ourselves, but that you also added the extra video of the grandpa sweater. I’m sorry if I got the name wrong. I did watch the live repeat where we were all begging for both of these tutorials. Thank you so much. I’m going to make this cardigan, but in a 4 wgt yarn now that I know how to measure properly. Any other time I’ve made a wearable I held my breath and prayed that it was correct. Have a great evening.
That made complete sense to me and now I finally understand how it’s all worked out which I have had problems with trying to adjust clothing to my body because as you said it we are all different sizes even if you wear the same size your shape or measurements can be very different. Thank you so much for doing this for us and all the help you give I really couldn’t do this without your guidance 🤗
Crystal this was indeed helpful. I haven’t made a wearable garment yet, but it’s on my 2024 bucket list. I am definitely going to make a sweater soon. I want to try both a pull over and a cardigan. I was able to follow this video pretty well and was super impressed that you put it together so quickly after it came up during the live. Wow! I was a little lost when talking about the neck opening. That is likely because I have not actually made a garment yet. I appreciate having this video. After I decide on the pattern for me and watch this video a couple of times I think I will get it. If there is anyway you can explain the neck opening in a visual way, using a sweater, it might be clearer to me. If you can’t, no worries. I will use what you have provided and figure it out. Again, I really, really appreciate you.
Look at you!!! We talk about things in your chat and BAM Crystal comes through!!! We love you ❤
Michi Exactly my thoughts! ❤
You do not suck at explaining! I love how you explain things in multiple ways for all of us to be able to understand. Thank you, again.

I just bought some natural fiber, hand dyed yarns for a sweater today. I am happy you did this video.

What great info ....I could never get this by reading it in a book....thank you so much so glad I found you. You are a great teacher 😊
I've never made one shaped, but I will try. Thank you for sharing and I have this saved in a special place to keep on hand.
WOW that made sense to me and I don't make wearables yet. However, I did many years ago make clothes and had to think about the positive ease. Good job explaining the "how to".
Hi Crystal
Thank you for your wonderful explanation of measurements.
THIS IS AWESOME. NOW I CAN ADJUST IT TO MY MEASUREMENTS. THANKS, CRYSTAL 🙏🏼❤
Thank you for being a teacher
You are a fabulous teacher! Thank you! I am not confident in attempting a personal sweater. ❤
WOW, so technical yet SO helpful!!!
This is great! I was looking for a simple explanation of creating a cardigan. I don't crochet cardigans but I knit them and will use this..thank you!
This will be very useful, thank you Crystal 💕
Fabulous! Thanks so much for helping me and others to learn! Have a blessed day
That made complete sense to me and now I finally understand how it’s all worked out which I have had problems with trying to adjust clothing to my body because as you said it we are all different sizes even if you wear the same size your shape or measurements can be very different. Thank you so much for doing this for us and all the help you give I really couldn’t do this without your guidance 🤗
this is actually a really good explanation. Although I wish I was your size - it would make life a lot easier!
Perfect timing! I am, now, comfortable enough to attend making clothing for myself and have wondered how to get started. Thank you so much!
