This video shows the process for how to install a SoundTraxx Tsunami 2 TSU-N18 DCC decoder into a N Scale Kato EMD P42DC Genesis locomotive using a Wutter Vehicles & Details WVD Next 18 Adapter Board. The P42 is mostly indistinguishable from the P40, and the adapter board is made to work with F Units as well as the F40-PH line of locomotives from Kato.
Along the way, we make the ditch lights separately controllable, and program them to flash alternately when the horn is sounded, just like the prototypes do. We also install independently operable front and rear marker lights.
This is the second part of my long distance Amtrak train build, in honor of Amtrak's 50th anniversary. In the next episode, we'll add interior lighting to the coaches as well as rear marker lights for the last car in the train.
Special thanks to Alvin Ho of Wutter Vehicles and Details for the WVD Next 18 Adapter Board, and also to SoundTraxx for providing the TSU-N18 decoder that was used in the making of this program.

Thank you for sharing your upgrades John. The additional lighting turned out great. I do agree that sliver or chrome paint would do a better job at preventing the light leakage without compromising the light intensity

The key to soldering is prep. Always clean with some scotch brite and use flux, that's it.

Thanks for sharing! The TSU-KN1 is also a practical alternative but this installation is also good in case the user wants to switch to an ESU Micro decoder in the future. The TSU-N18 I have a feeling will also be a hit with Scaletrains and Rapido N scale installs.

I cannot find the third installment of this series in you video list. Can you post a link to the video as I am also instaling lighting in my passenger cars and would like to see how you did it. Thanks!

Hi Anthony that is still under development. I have one of the cars lit up but have not decided if I want to light all of them the same way. There are also kits by Kato that are pretty easy to use, and the cars come with the electrical pickups installed from the factory. If you're looking for an easy way to light em up that's the one.
