Very nice boat and video. I like the way you edited the video and didn't force the viewer to sit through all the "in between" stuff, like seeing the boat being rigged, or lengthy shots of the launching, etc. Good job. Thanks.
I am building my boat now completed the bulkheads and am making steady progress. am enjoying your vids very much hope to be sailing on the great south bay in ny by next year thanks Tom D
Very nice video. When I sail Enigma or Little Cruiser in windier conditions I often sit inside on the floor boards and more amidship which lower the center of gravity and allows the boat to sail more upright. Also when working hard to windward I slide my body weight more forward in the cabin which then forces the bow to ride deeper and cause the boat to point higher. Of course when running off the wind and surfing sitting towards the stern works just fine.
Wow She Sails Absolutely Beautifully........!!!!!!!!!!! Beautiful Boat and Beautiful Lines and with those Chine Runners She Sails Just So so Well.....!!!!!!! An Absolute Joy to see......!!!!!!!! Does She have to be healed over for the Chine runners to work and allow her to point up wind and does this work in light winds without enough wind to get her to heal over too.....????? Its Also Amazing how she got such little draft too can't be more than a few inches with the rudder up.....!!!!!!!! Such a Beautiful Video Sean and Such a Beautiful Boat too....!!!!!! Really Well Done......!!!!!!!! Thanks So much for sharing :) :) :) :) :)
Tommy...one of the beauties of this design is I did show you almost all the rigging! LOL it literally takes just minutes from road ready to ready to sail. :-)
I love the auto furling boom. What a fantastic idea. How does the ability to downhaul work - I would like to know what stops the sail from being pulled out by the wind and the downhaul tension.
MM LaFrance yes you can reef underway and do so from inside the cabin with the hatch closed if you want to. All the sail control lines are led inside. I no longer have the boat. If you google “Paradox sailboat” you’ll find videos from other owners of how it works. It’s very effective and once you master the process it is infinitely reefable and unreefable in seconds. Truly an amazing design by the boats designer Matt Layton
It would be interesting to have a potable water bladder inside the water tank. If you could fill the tank around the bladder as it empties to maintain the ballast bust still have the fresh water as a resource. First one to the Azors buys the beer.
Pete... I didn't build the boom....but yes it appears to be a bit long. Might look even longer when the sail is partially reefed which it is in almost all of this video. However...I think I can shave probably 10 to 12 inches off of it. I wanted to wait till I really sail the boat before cutting it off to make sure i am not missing something. :-)
It's a lug sail. If the tack (bottom front corner) of the sail ("tack") is forward of the mast, it's a "balanced lug". If the tack is in line with the mast, it's a "standing lug". Here, she's sailed heavily reefed and the sail appears to be not in its normal position. I'd call this a balanced lug as the tack is just forward of the mast.(Other versions of the lugsail also exist.)
Wow! nice job Sean, looks like your having fun! Try searching West Mersa Duck Punts on utube, traditional english gunning floats that sail using the same principals, no centerboard or rudder, just a steerign oar.
Why not have a small keel? Drag? Or maybe a wooden keel that can be installed on rough seas? Can you please give the pro’s and cons of not having keel on this small boat? Could you put a keel you could manually lower and raise as needed?
Dave... Thanks for the tip. I probably need to get forward also for tacking. It was difficult to get her around in the chop and wind but I bet getting weight forward will help. I will try that next time out. One thing that is a bummer was that it was close to 110...and being down inside was pretty warm! LOL
Actually, all that fresh water was sucked directly out the lake when the boat was launched....so it's really just going back where it came from...it wasn't drinking water. :-)

You’re missing the point. Everything about the design is to make leeboards, daggerboard, centerboard or keel unnecessary. There are many advantages to such a design. Winning the America’s Cup isn’t one.
I like the ratio & proportions of this boat & the rig. It is clear that it sails " on it's ear" half the time ie. excessively heeled. I would want to hike- out as a dinghy sailor...& I see you cannot do that. For the time & money involved I would build something else. No offense. We are all experimenters who choose to build boats!
+FlatlandMando The boat has chine logs that help it go to weather without needing a dagger board or centerboard. These need to be immersed to work, so it has to be heeled. It has ballast to keep from capsizing, and no need to work out your abs with hiking.

My thoughts exactly! Very FUN to watch! Enjoyed this video tremendously. Thank you!

What a fun sailboat to watch!
I would love to see it from the captains view!

Nice boat and Lindsey's music :)
that rolled reef works pretty well.. I'm impressed.
Great video. Enjoy...
Pete
Really good video, and a nicely built boat. I have a question about the boom: did you make it a little longer than designed, or is that standard?
This is an amazing sailboat. is it possible to get drawings that is used for building it? Also the rig is very well.
Put lee boards on each side, like the Dutch.
Why? It doesn’t need them
@@simproficient9621
Yes, it does.
Very impressive. The folding system on your boom looks interesting... And music is not that bad.
The lateral resistance must be generated by the generous rudder area,I have seen such ideas in old Venetian lug riggers
I love the auto furling boom. What a fantastic idea. How does the ability to downhaul work - I would like to know what stops the sail from being pulled out by the wind and the downhaul tension.
You’ve gotta keep halyard tension up as you roller furl it.
hove about x-Atlantik with it , you think its posible with som modyfikaisjen ???
Cool vid! I sail a lug rig but have never seen a roller furl reefing unit on a boom. How does that work? Can you adjust it as you sail?

The hull shape reminds me of a certain luxury cruiser (motorboat) that I have seen advertised in Afloat magazine
Yeah. The “Wally” boats. Good call.
merci
I would like to see this on a larger scale. The rig is so beautifully simple! Is there a name for this particular rig (pardon my ignorance)?
It's a lug sail. If the tack (bottom front corner) of the sail ("tack") is forward of the mast, it's a "balanced lug". If the tack is in line with the mast, it's a "standing lug". Yep that's right....the hull, chine runners, and rudder all work together to drive her to windward.
So does this sail a bit like a duck punt i.e. needs to be heeled to dig chine in?
Wow! nice job Sean, looks like your having fun! Try searching West Mersa Duck Punts on utube, traditional english gunning floats that sail using the same principals, no centerboard or rudder, just a steerign oar.
danoyes1 I’ll check em out. The Paradox was a fun boat. I no longer own her but I had a blast and even took her on the Texas 200.

+Sean Mulligan Oh snap, well said.
Yepp, the volume controls in the editing software.
Good morning, I'm Rodrigö, I live in Brazil on the beach, would you be able to donate me the plans to build my house, my dream of freedom, thank you
Yeah but without a keel you will just be blown sideways ... into the wind and tacking with no head way...

the balance on this boat looks horrible
Easy Aces well looks are deceiving. I sailed the Texas 200 in that boat and it blew people's minds with what it could do
Nah .. build a flicka 20. Much better...
