Dave, not sure if you had seen them back in the day, but Dr. Ken Norberg published a number of books called the “Hunters Almanac”. He was a big proponent of ground hunting in the mid 90’s on. I always seen a lot of deer close in back in the day on the ground. I had a pack stool, and would tuck up in some brush, or behind something to break up my sign. I’m mostly in a tree now, but those where fun times.
Great video, I'm reaching an age that makes climbing sketchy. I started ground hunting this year and have found it extremely difficult to get comfortable. I move way to much. This video has given me lots of ideas to implement. Thanks
Thanks for sharing. My seat will be here in about a week can’t wait. I hunt with a recurve from the ground. Love ground hunting. This will be my 6th year.
Great video! I'm a big fan of the Waldrop pac seat also. Funny thing, when you said you carry prunes, I thought great idea! I need to be regular too at my age! lol
I’m basically grounded now because of health reasons, I hunt with a longbow, would love to see some of your actual ground blinds set ups. Thanks for sharing all your skills
If we didn’t have to move to shoot all we’d need is back cover. Had a mature buck staring at me inside of 20 yds this morning and never spook. I was wide open but standing in front of a huge blowdown on the tree side of the root ball, wearing a navy jacket and orange hat scouting during the juvenile hunt. That pack chair is pretty cool.
Hey Dave great video. I was wondering if you did those B&W photos comparing the ASAT suit with the Cipher one? Looking at a something lighter then my burlap top and have been eye balling those two.
Thanks. I think both ASAT and Cipher leafy tops will work. I prefer the cipher over ASAT as I just think it blends a little better up close. Those strong black lines in ASAT to me stand out a bit more and i just dont see a lot of black like that in nature ( unless theres been a fire). But no, I just did some B&W with cipher and reg ghillie top. Also, the ASAT leafy IMO the colors are not an exact match to original ASAT suits... Looks more unnatural than the original colors. Might be a manufacturer/ material thing?
@@davetoms63 Thanks for the reply, makes sense. I was thinking the same thing about the ASAT leafy suit but was not sure on the cipher pattern. I like that cape idea, I did something similar with a boonie hat after being busted sitting still.
I was thinking of taking a few artificial Christmas 🎄 tree limbs to place in front of me while ground hunting and u can bend and shape the artificial tree limbs to suit you and it wouldn't be to hard to bundle up a few limbs and transport to the woods and through the woods ! Whats your thoughts on this ,?
I have a firm belief that deer have learned to recognize the curved brim of the modern camo baseball cap as a sign of danger (along with recognizing the face) .
@RedNeckRN frame is made with stiff wire and a carbon arrow. I attached some came netting I had, then add ghillie material. I have a video on it somewhere on yourube channel
Another great video Dave!! Looking forward to a video showing how you set up in the field. Do you have instruction videos on how to make the bow blind and guille cape? If not is it possible to make one?
I love them both.... But with a bad back i would think the Waldrops will give more support but im not a good judge as my back is one of few body parts still holding up. It sits a lot like a chair.
Try a 4-6” pine board 2-3’ long. Cover both sides with camo duct tape. A good cushion on the ground and a board leaning against a tree. Works amazingly for my back. And cheap.
@@davetoms63 I have tried the ground game for several years and learned some of this the hard way. the video is really good. I am in the middle of watching it now. Do you show where to get or how to make the head cape? That thing is awesome.
@@mitchellblount4896 I started a video but never finished it. I basically take a boonie hat, add some netting, then add in the yarn. One of these days I'll try to throw something together I just am terrible at filming and zero editing knowledge
This is GOLD! I'm a new hunter that's been busted several times on the ground. Think this is going to help tremendously!

Great system. I like that you are thinking outside of the box!
Great video, great podcast on Southern Outdoorsman. I had to stop by to see what a "Gila" suit was!
You look like a rockstar in that crazy cape.

Have you tried any of the Tidewe ground blinds?

No I like natural cover. Never liked blinds.
Most exciting to hunt from the ground with a decoy in Kansas .

Did you get the pac seat or the turkey seat those legs look low. I want to be as low to ground as possible
pac seat
Where and what kind of boonie hat comes with the webbing and where can the synthetic yarn be purchased?
Boonie hat was from Amazon. I bought the thread off a ghillie supplier but amazon carries it as well
Yarn u can purchase at Hobby lobby
How did you attach the yarn to the hat?
the hat had webbing already on it. but use shoe goo to attach netting to hat, very easy to do
Please do follow up. It is hard to find quality info on ground hunting from people who really know.
What is it you want me to cover?
