@@SimUKReviews You're welcome. The thing about simmers and simming that these devs are missing is that I go hardcore into a sim for months at a time, then suddenly I move on to another. only to eventually come back to it again. It's only the subscription model that's making me think twice about getting this. I spent hours in the old ship simulator extremes going between Dover and Calais reverse docking the ferry and I quite enjoyed it and I'm sure I would enjoy playing with large ships again. First time I've seen that intro with the ship and plane and that's a pretty cool intro.

At this stage of early access all they seem to have done is strip down their complex simulator version and imported the assets from extremes, it even feels the same as extremes apart from realism of controlling is improved. other than that i cant see how this stands out, oh yes that's right there's no other competition out there. I really hope this isn't another extremes where they market a possible great sim with up to date graphics but then release a terrible looking mediocre sim, yes they win on realism and controls but so far for me this is just extremes with a monthly cost. :(

After the first announcement I was really excited for this sim. Until they revealed, that it would be subscription based. The plague of our times. Like many other I play a lot of different sim, if I find the time at all. I’m heavily invested in DCS. Not only time-, but money wise. I think their business model is way smarter. The base game for free and paid airframes and maps. The stuff is absolutely worth it.
I understand why developers go the subscription route. A predictable constant cash flow is nice to have, but at least in my case, they don’t get any cash flow at all.
I think the DCS model could work really well for Nautis Home. Or just do what everybody else does, sell the game on steam and generate future income through DLC.
With the subscription, I see that thing..well..dead in the water.

    • @SimUKReviews

@@SimUKReviews I would say around 60€ for the base game, 20€ - 60€ per ship, depending on system depth and something similar for additional maps, depending on size and quality. Pretty much what is considered “normal” in the sim world.

I agree with you. Im totally against subscription based games. If they released ships similar to the way DCS does, theyd make their money. FS2020 does it the same way! Free base game with free base aircraft with premium aircraft for sale individually. I suspect people will opt into a one time 6 month sub, and ditch the game after that 6 months. They cant argue this is a realistic nautical game and it requires a paid sub because DCS is a REAL combat simulator with REAL 1:1 aircraft models and REAL missile systems and its FREE. The only thing you buy in DCS are the aircraft which are heafty yes but with the level of quality you get, its worth it. $60 USD for just an Apache gunship.

I have to agree with the comments here as well. Modern game design have already put forward a better model than subscriptions, though subscription is quite simple to implement. It's a shame because I'd love to just own this and be able to play it regardless of subscription fees, and support it with additional purchases down the line if it's feasible, like most modern simulators do today.

@@SimUKReviews As an American trucker who hauls shipping containers to our west coast, this would be interesting to try the other end of the supply chain. I for one hate online subscription models. I could see $20 a year plus purchasing a ship/harbor pack DLC, but it seems like a make work scheme to keep programmers paid after the sales slow down or dry up.
I could see $30 for off line version of game, maybe $40, then $20 a year. To include online multiplayer player, and for either real world weather data and prices to run ship as a business.
So, let’s say I load up a container ship in Los Angeles. Is load time real like 48hours, or 5 minutes? Once I exit the harbor and head to say, Oakland, CA of Tokyo Japan, is the transit real time or scaled time across a map to enter ports in real time? Same questions for storms enroute, random result or option to traverse it manually then fast travel to ports?

They make it look like you only need to create an account to play but when you start the sim, it says your "subscription" is not active and you have to pay a subscription to play. It's an absolute subscription garbage so i'm uninstalling it, and wishing them to go bankrupt. What a waste of time.

A small but significant thing to me is that the pricing isn't made readily available on the site without volunteering personal information, unless I'm missing something. It's certainly not prominently displayed. It doesn't change the value proposition of the product itself but it reather feels like the devs are looking to "rope me in", as it were, and that rather leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

@@SimUKReviews That's a really good question. If it were around CDN$60-80 and DLCs were in the CDN$20-$40 range (depending on what they include) I'd be in.
To be honest though for a one time purchase I'm not that price sensitive so if that had to be a bit higher to make it commercially viable I'd be onboard (pardon the pun!)
I might have to bite the bullet and do a one month just to try it out...that would probably help me refine my numbers.
If I compare to MSFS, the base game was around CDN$100 or $120 I think (Premium Deluxe) but since then I've probably spent a few thousand dollars on DLC over time. But it's all mine to play without ongoing costs. I could lose my job tomorrow and keep playing.
Similar for Train Sim World 3...I can't even remember what the base game cost but I've put hundreds of dollars into that game in DLC. Same idea with Train Simulator Classic and DCS to an extent.

I don't think the cost is high per se; as if you factor 70 dollars for the sim, plus say 50-100 dollars a year for DLCs, you end up spending these money anyway... But what kill it for me is the fact that I have to pay for something that I can't play if I don't pay, even after spending a ton of money on it.
If I spend 300 dollars on it, I want to keep playing what I paid for; instead with a subscription model, I have nothing to play, unless I pay more and more.
This works if this is something I use for work; say I pay for a subscription to use Visual studio or Unity or Photoshop or 3d Studio max, but this is a game, a hobby... So many people while willing to pay for their hobby, will think a lot before give away money for free to just have fun. Doesn't matter how accurate and perfect it is; I can buy MSFS for 100 dollars and a bunch of planes, and get DLCs but I own the bloody thing and can play as long as I want when I want, and if I don't want to buy more DLCs or get new updates, I can play the game for as long as my computer and OS are able to run it.

Do you have any other subscriptions? Plus it is only 6 during beta, will nearly double after that.
My concern is that it will die using a monthly subscription model.
      1,000 paying 10 a month = 120,000 year ... but will drop numbers quickly.
30,000 people paying 30 upfront and then paying again for DLC locations and you're looking at 900000 +

    • @kristianstaalby8499
      @kristianstaalby8499 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@SimUKReviews Your calculation of potential revenue seems to be based on arbitrary assumptions. While you estimate 1,000 people paying $10 a month, it's unclear how you arrived at this number. And, claiming that the numbers will drop quickly without any substantiating evidence weakens your argument.
Additionally, your proposal of having 30,000 people paying $30 upfront and then paying again for DLC locations might sound appealing from a revenue perspective, but it fails to consider the impact on the player base and the potential for alienating customers. Such a model could create a barrier for entry, leading to limited adoption and hindering the growth of the sim.
Instead, a subscription-based model can offer a sustainable revenue stream for ongoing development and support of the sim. By providing a lower monthly cost, it becomes accessible to a wider audience, ensuring a larger player base and fostering a healthier community. This, in turn, can lead to continued updates, improvements, and the availability of more DLC options.
Ultimately, the success of a subscription-based model depends on factors such as pricing, content quality, and the overall value proposition. It's crucial to assess these factors objectively and consider the long-term benefits rather than relying solely on assumptions and speculative figures.
      Thank you for reading.

Hi Kristian, I love a healthy respectful debate :-)
So let me get this clear; from your perspective as I see it:
Your Argument of Who can't afford the WRONG price & The Sim will DIE Without a subscription model is based on what.....? Nothing but pure speculation right.
I find it curious that you also argue: A subscription model will keep costs low and "in turn, can lead to continued updates, improvements, and the availability of more DLC options."

    • @kristianstaalby8499
      @kristianstaalby8499 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SimUKReviews
      Hello SimUKReviews. 🙂
You pointed out that my opening comment about who can't afford 6€ a month seemed speculative. You're right, I apologize for making assumptions without considering different financial situations. And yes, having DLC bundled with a subscription-model is "whack". I must have accidentally swapped my thermos for something stronger.
Now, let's delve into the comparison between subscription-based models and one-time payments using your numbers. You mentioned 1,000 subscribers paying $10 a month, which would result in $120,000 per year. While this might seem modest at first glance, it's crucial to consider the sustainability and longevity of this revenue stream. Subscription models offer a continuous and predictable income over an extended period, which allows for ongoing development and support. It also is a way to try-before-you-buy without committing with a large sump cost.
In contrast, you suggested a base price of $30 upfront for 30,000 users, ($900,000) followed by additional payments for DLC locations. While this upfront payment might provide an immediate cash injection, it's important to consider the potential drop-off in revenue after the initial sales. Additionally, relying solely on DLC purchases for future income can be uncertain, as it heavily relies on user adoption and willingness to make additional purchases. We also do not know what price they would charge for a one-time purchase, making the $30 a guesstimate at best.
A subscription-based model provides a more predictable and sustainable income stream, ensuring ongoing updates, improvements, and the availability of additional content. This stability allows the development team to plan for the future, invest in continuous enhancements, and provide a consistent experience for subscribers.
While a one-time payment model may seem enticing for some users who prefer an upfront cost, and the feeling of ownership, it can lead to challenges in long-term support and development. By adopting a subscription-based approach, Nautis HS can secure a reliable revenue stream, allowing for a more sustainable and consistent evolution of the sim.
Ultimately, as you said, our shared goal is to see Nautis HS thrive and improve. While we may have different perspectives on the business model, I find it important to consider the long-term viability and the ability to provide ongoing support to users. By implementing and keeping a subscription-based model, Nautis HS can, in my opinion, ensure a more stable future and continue delivering a high-quality experience for its dedicated community.

In my humble opinion, Vstep is all about waves, currents, charts and systems. Fair enough. But it's not fair enough for a consumer product that needs the immersion a physical simulator brings. Their sims always lack immersion. The simple thing of just walking the bridge and feeling like you're there. And my dismay comes from noticing that they're seemingly on the same engine as 10 years back with no attention focused on bringing that missing immersion to the table and that they're just re-using ship models from before. Virtual Sailor has mods with way more realistic ships and that's not asking for 100 USD per year. I don't have high hopes for this one and nothing I've seen or read makes me believe they're on the right track. Look at the simulators available these days. We have everything from Brewmaster to Tourist Bus Simulator, to Farming Simulator, titles that take immersion very very seriously. Vstep doesn't get it and I don't see that they ever will. Just my humble analysis. And as always when thinking the negative, I sincerely hope to be proven wrong!

I would use it for fun, on a casual basis. With that price, no I won't use this, even if it half as awesome as shown in the video.

@@SimUKReviews I have one subscription at 6,50 euro/month because the software is really special and with high impact on my play styles. But mostly 5 euro a month is really my max. That is 60 euro a year what I find is a good average cost of a game or tool. A game or tool must be VERY special to ask for more and for me to accept that. From what I have seen of Nautis, it looks great, but the price of 9,xx a month is in my opinion excessive. Certainly compared to other subscription based games and simulators. If the base price to buy it right out was above 50 euro I would not do it too. But be aware, this is totally my personal feeling and opinion, I fully understand that others find it a perfect price and such.

@@SimUKReviews seeing more videos about this sim, the more I’m convinced that the asked price is overvalued for a home sim. Excessive really. The graphics are not on par with current day expectations, no open world. Unless they do some extensive changes to both what they deliver and the piece this will never be a ‘go’ for me.

They made a mistake with having monthly subscription. Just make one time purchase, I dont care if its very expensive, but at least i can OWN a thing and have it for the rest of the time.

This model is far too rich for my blood. What a shame more people won't be able to experience this.
The number of months of gameplay I put into Ports of Call on the Amiga, 100% of the time manually docking... this looks like that on steroids. I'd love to play the sim and in VR it would be even crazier (dunno if VR is on the horizon, or if it can be tweaked-in). Sadly, it looks like I'll never get to do it.

I wish they would incorporate ocean liners from the past and present. It’s hard for me to get down with a game like this when there aren’t ships that I favor. Do you think they will ever incorporate ocean liners? I want to buy the game but I am not sure what I would use. The cruise ship looks good I guess. Can you make the transatlantic crossing on this game?
