Thanks for posting this video.. I found this video sometime last year but couldn't see the dancers close up. So .. Really pleased to find this. I love the vibe of northern soul .. Wish I was there. Let vibe flow.
its good to see the northern scene still ticking on and every one having agreat time ! life can be to serious at times .Stephen is a good dancer . But James the Best dancer by far !
they havent slipped a bit... i was in this comp and was in the final 8, and it was hard getting that far... the comp lasted 9 records ! they havent slipped, they were fucked and im sure you would be to... all us young soulies are the new generation and wouldnt change it for the world, both these lads are good friends of mine and the best dancers i know :) ... KTF
The young lad is good and is getting it and so it should be ,and i hope many more young bloods come along and keep the scene going ,But The guy with the shirt for me %100 without doubt .You could see he gets all the vibe probly going back to his teens and it shows ,, Dont Keep the Faith Share it . STF
Neither are great dancers when you look at videos of the original NS dancers. The lad in blue is mostly doing set pieces and doesn't seem to show any feeling at all but the one in the white shirt is really feeling the groove and is more natural
James is far better than anyone I've seen in the old videos. Much more style and musicality. Too many people living on nostalgia, missing the fact that Northern Soul has changed and there are many dancers who've taken it way beyond what was being done at Wigan
Those knocking the young lad in blue, should take a look at him on some more recent videos. Fantastic spins, great floor work, great rhythm. I went to Wigan from 77 on and now he'd be up with the best. So, give him a break, he was learning his craft and he's now a credit to himself and Northern Soul.
KevinK: We only have this clip to judge them on. I wasn't knocking him I was just giving my opinion of his performance.......as no doubt the judges did
GOOD MOVES, I COULDNT DO NONE OF THEM MOVES, BUT I SHUFFLE AND FEEL THE GROOVE AND ALSO LOOK PRETTY COOL, DO THEY HAVE A COMPETITION FOR THE OVER 60S ?
Have to comment. The guy in the white shirt wins hands down! The chap in the foreground no rhythm just old tricks and probably dances the same to every track.
Leave the kids alone you grumpy old farts . It's evolution . If this is what helps keep our sounds alive today and tomorrow then thats it . No it's not like back in the day with bags and vests but lets be honest it was never really a good look though eh . . Move on
This is only my own personal view . I’m not a fan of dancing competitions . I’ve watched many in my time and due to the (clicks) that go hand in hand with any scene wheels within wheels work and I’ve seen far better dancers not make the final . Also people dance from how it makes them feel from within and if your not of a certain status within the scene you have more chance of winning the lottery with a 12 month old ticket than being chosen to stay on the floor . I’ve never ever tried to enter a competition as it sets people apart from others on the scene and I thought the northern soul scene was for all those who love or like the music . People dance from there inner soul if you feel the grove . Also compétions deprive others of valuable dancing time which is why you pay to go to an event . The scene is about unity not them and us 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶❤️🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶✊️
James Whitehead. Best dancer on the scene. How he never won this dance-off that night is a Travesty. Absolutely pissed it. He was the best dancer there the whole weekend by a MILE.
Nobody did splits an back drops to The Epitome of Sound, spins yeah but the acrobatics looks contrived and do not suit the tune at all. These young dancers seem to think if they're not rolling all over the floor they're not doing it right.
yeah it seems to be the parents who want to live their lives through their kids getting them into the scene . i dont think there is anything wrong but its not what it was all about . you had to be there at the time
i agree not the best by a long way ...but lets not forget, it was the music that mattered not how good you were with your feret...long may it live, keep the faith
I think you have to take into account the performance enhancing power of speed. I've seen mediocre footballers look very good on speed. Same thing with NS dancing. I danced a lot in the 70s in discos down south but regret never having taken the trip to Wigan to test myself against the best there. I think I missed my true calling. Would have loved it.
I've danced to music most of my life and would say that neither of them are any good at dancing IMO. You either have rhythm or you haven't. It's natural . You're born with it . You can't somehow learn, or teach it. It's something within. Feel...that...groove!
I,ll be taking that crown off you i,m affraid ...I,m old skool but still dance all night ...plus i,m cool as ...look out for a little bald chap coming to claim whats now rightly my crown ... blackpool tower it is then !!!!!
Dead right there matey.. but they are keeping the scene going, so fair play to them. Just wish they would try and put some more footwork into their dancing, then they would be Brilliant..... We are slightly jealous because we might be a bit old to dance as long as they do.. I am sixty this year and can still do a bit, but no where near as long as they can.. Still my Partner and her family still like to watch me moving.... KTF
my dad and unlce went to wigan casino when they were young ans my unlce tam got voted the best dancer.. travelled down from edinburg most weekends.. my old man said the young guys good but not as good as half the older guys theses days.. keep tryin
if they are the best you know you need to get yourself out there and see what your missing, who ever judged this did,nt have a clue and why on earth then needed 9 rounds to pick a winner,i might have to come out of retirement so name the place matie
One winner only - the guy in the blue has headphones on and is listening to something that I can't hear....the guy in the white has been modelling himself on my own dancefloor arrogance....................Dave Bevan Stroud.
The so called ' northern soul scene' has got so CHAVVY. It's so obvious the poor kid's parents have forced this music and style of dance upon him. Let the kid breathe and discover something new for himself...just the way youth culture is meant to be. Yes, respect to the kid...but I bet he'd rather be somewhere else.I could never have imagined the original mods or soulies in the late 1960s or early 1970s being in a club with their parents.Something's not right...something's just not right.
I actually ( bit pissed and at the last minute! ) decided to enter a year later or was it this one? ...anyway ,, it got to about 40 odd then a load of Scots got in my corner and pointed for me to go through ... Thanks where ever you are ...God Bless Ye!....then the Lanyard went on... Alas it wasn't About expressing each Record , it was about ( Dubious ) acrobatics ....and crap dancing in between. I was near 50 then but still spinned and kept up for 3 records ...I have to say the choice of 45' s where SHITE ...." I'm the Man" was one ..what the Fuck are you supposed to do to that ! ...? Beats all wrong IMO . You know the feeling when you will Not ...no matter how good you are At something and How many endorse what your doing ....you just will NOT go any further....thats What it was like .... The best part of Blackpool for me was in The lower level ...Black sheets on the walls ,,,"Wang Dang Doodle " & Lets Go Baby Where the Action is" Smart dressers and Ska RnB all randomly Played ...Sound system was awful ... But the atmos was superb. Sorry ....Never again ...but it Was an experience of sorts ! And that Ruddy Lanyard ...got in the way 200Kid .
How cheesy I understand young uns getting into the scene as I'am into it myself always thought dance comps are naff and It pisses me off with people putting dance moves in when there not even in time to the music or to the dance break ffs
It is more of a hop skip and a jump than northern soul dancing, the acrobatics are ok, but the footwork is very poor and sloppy. The guy at the back is more of a ballet or figure skater type dancer. Back in the glory days of the Casino they would have been ridiculed, for that effort.

Wow, the man in the white shirt is impressive. Got a really good rythm going and kept it up.
SO BEAUTIFUL X
its good to see the northern scene still ticking on and every one having agreat time !
life can be to serious at times .Stephen is a good dancer . But James the Best dancer by far !
brilliant thank you for posting takes me back

To many people living in the past { Wigan Torch etc 1970s } Welcome to the 2016 James Whitehead is a fantastic dancer with a style of his own !!
Is this classed as good in soul circles cos they look pretty average..?
The young lad is good and is getting it and so it should be ,and i hope many more young bloods come along and keep the scene going ,But The guy with the shirt for me %100 without doubt .You could see he gets all the vibe probly going back to his teens and it shows ,, Dont Keep the Faith Share it . James Whitehead Won that hands down !! Far better dancer !!!!!!!!!!
Favoloso! Bravo Stephen, bless you! from an old Modette :)
I've never eally understood the need for dance comps. There - I said it!
Exhausting and nerve racking for the youngsters. If you love Soul dancing .. you're already a winner.
great dancing. well done to both of them. ktf
Both are are very
good dancers
fair play to um,, wish i was that young again, northern will never die...
The lad in white better moves own style .like it
I could watch James Whitehead all day.....✊🏻
Neither are great dancers when you look at videos of the original NS dancers. The lad in blue is mostly doing set pieces and doesn't seem to show any feeling at all but the one in the white shirt is really feeling the groove and is more natural
Hahaha, James Whitehead in the white, only the best Northern Soul dancer of all time, but "neither are great dancers"😂

fab dancing the more i see the videos the more im hooked, would love to be able to dance like that .
its not about how good you are its about the music

DO THEY HAVE A COMPETITION FOR THE OVER 60S ?
That's awesome!!!
Both great dancers, prefer the guy in white shirt if I'm honest. Wigan casino is gone but fair play to young soulies KTF... 😊✊
Have to comment. The guy in the white shirt wins hands down! The chap in the foreground no rhythm just old tricks and probably dances the same to every track.
what gaz said
BETTER FOOTWORK BY THE LAD IN THE LIGHT TOP THOUGH
Ciao from Torino, Italia by rockstaff
If this is the quality of Northern in a dance competition..RIP northern dancing.
that's how i dance when im pissed
Leave the kids alone you grumpy old farts . It's evolution . If this is what helps keep our sounds alive today and tomorrow then thats it . No it's not like back in the day with bags and vests but lets be honest it was never really a good look though eh . . Move on
how did this young man win? those moves are his best shot I guess ,but come on now-have you seen dancers at the torch in 1970?
This is only my own personal view .

did you upload to be included in a possible tv prog (one day in britain ) ?
the moves r there but were,s the soul brothers??????????
Dancing by numbers and out of time.To busy trying to look good, 70's mediocre dancers, me included, would have wiped the floor with them.
+Peter Bottomley Agree Pete, but with some numbers missing... lol shite.
would ye, aye?
yeah it seems to be the parents who want to live their lives through their kids getting them into the scene . i dont think there is anything wrong but its not what it was all about . you had to be there at the time
thx but this isnt the same one.several more to come.ktf
Reyt dancer in white shirt x
i agree not the best by a long way ...but lets not forget, it was the music that mattered not how good you were with your feret...long may it live, keep the faith
didn't look like a good year for dancers, but for soul brother61 to assume all the dancers were from the North in Wigan would be a mistake
Great :)

The lad that won is good - but very generic.... James Whitehead smashes it ✊🏻☺️
spinning off spot, to much gymnastics, not enough footwork
me to mate i went to blackpool a few times loved it when the comp came on i went upstairs to carry on doing what I went for dancing
SIDE STEP SIDE STEP SHOW SOME RYTHYM AND FEELING FUCKIN BOLLOX APRECIATE THE MUSIC AND SHOW IT IN YOUR DANCING
?
Is this a joke?
Crap, no room for drop kicks and back flips in my opinion, best dancers don’t need them.
Neither are great dancer's where's the fire? Where's the passion?
the guys right, this is crap dancin' get with it......KTF old school...........
move on man.......bags and vests ffs lol

@@KeepTheFaith45 Very true, I just wish I could turn back time and relive my Wigan Casino days all over again.
ive seen dancers so so much better at every soul do ive been to.... bit of a joke really...
The most repatative dance in history..NS
This is not how northern should be. Competitions? Sorry this is wrong. So wrong!
🤣🤣🤣🙄😴
I’m sorry but I don’t understand what kind of dancing this is probably some of the most horrible stuff I’ve ever seen
Totally awful dancing... if in the early 70's would have laughed off the floor. if I saw them now would be the same very , very poor...
WOULD HAVE BEEN THROWN OF THE PIER
