A really good one and I always find it funny when people in this situation think they have to save the world from a fungus or parasite and then completely overlook the fact they are clearly infected as well, if not the only ones infected and it is making them think everyone else are the ones who are.
Well it makes sense, because the fungus or parasite is in charge of their brain, and it's making them see what it wants them to see. In the same way that some parasites can make mice seek out cats even though that's going to mean the mouse's death.
That’s what I thought; also can’t help but think that the fungus wants them to take people back to the dig site as a “sacrifice”, the fungus is eating them.
Very nice foreshadowing throughout the story with the fact that they themselves had also become infected thinking that they needed to "cleanse" the world in the end
I want to say they were the infected and that was the Fungus' purpose the infected brings the mycelium food in the form of fresh human flesh.....hmm..maybe
I know I am not alone in remembering that he also breathed in the fungi and it was more likely that he was seeing something that NO one else was. So my conclusion is that he and Penny were truly the only ones who were infected, and they had already begun their killing spree. Damn good twist! Although I do question about the government agents and whether they were also infected, or even really existed? It seems that they would’ve been there, and it’s more likely they were infected too, but where did they go? I’d enjoy a sequel to this, but I don’t expect one. Always great to see an upload from CreepsMcPasta! He chooses with careful consideration what stories he reads. And I tend to always like them. Keep them coming oh great one!!

Yes. Thar seems to be the conclusion everyone is drawing, including me. What graduate students decide so casually to kill two people- because of a possible infection..? Everything tasting sour, having to drink water, losing track of time, and feeling sick. Plus, they were the closest to the thread when it broke.
Eh, not really. It could certainly infect us, but insect nervous systems are very different, so it wouldn’t have the same effect. They don’t even have a neural cortex.

@@Kruhee That's interesting. We already have diseases that influence our behavior so I shouldn't be surprised that a fungus might effect us like that when I think about it. I don't think it will be a problem though if ants are smart enough to remove the infected insects we would notice a human with it.
This story kept me awake, it was so interesting… I had to hear the end! On waking, as thinking about the strange dream I had, I was instantly reminded of this strange story as the characters were in my dream in a coffee shop. I was too shy to bring up the DIG and sat there, hoping they’d tell me about their discoveries on its (orange thread) affects on humans… but they were acting like ‘bumbling idiots’, which is what I said before walking away! Soooo this real morning, I had to come back and re listen!! See how good YOU are?? Well done… I hope you’re here for a long time. Oh and by the way, your voice and accent are so easy to listen to … humble and gentlemanly!!! P.S… not sure if that’s a real word but it’s (dreamy)🤭🤗

Both main characters were Archaeologists working at a university, both believed that their finds should be in a museum, both searched for relics in their spare time and got into difficult and dangerous situations.
Yeah. Even if they hadn't been the ones infected from the start, any sane person in a situation like that would have automatically question whether or not their food had been tempered with to infect them. I mean, if they could put something in their colleague's food without being seen and their own food taste "funny", the logical conclusion would be that the colleagues could have done the same thing.

As soon as they both breathed in the ‘dust’ I had a feeling where it was going. Then when the two others started looking ‘off’ to them I figured it out. Good story, albeit kinda predictable, but good narration nonetheless.
