The Temple of Debod is an original Egyptian temple that is located in the Parque del Cuartel de la Montaña in Madrid. It was built in the 2nd century BC. C. and has a peculiar story behind it that takes us on a trip to Aswan.
It was originally located on the northern border of Lower Nubia, 16 kilometers from the city of Aswan. King Adijalamani of Meroe built a small chapel dedicated to the gods Amun de Debod and Isis de Filé on the remains of an ancient sanctuary.
The Adijalamani chapel is the heart of the temple, which was later expanded by King Ptolemy VI and his successor, Ptolemy VIII. When Rome conquered Egypt, two pylons, a processional way and a terrace were built.
The construction of the Aswan High Dam in 1960 would mean its loss under water, so it was donated to Spain thanks to the contributions made by the country to save the heritage affected by the dam.
In 1970, the 1,359 boxes containing the 1,724 blocks were carried down the Nile River to the port of Alexandria. From there they were taken to Valencia on the steamer Benisa, and deposited in the Cuartel de la Montaña site in June of that same year.
Its reconstruction posed a great challenge for Spain, since only a plan of the monument was delivered, a sketch of the elevations with a numbering of the situation of the blocks and photographs without any written reference.
The first work undertaken was the erection of a stone base to isolate the original slabs from the ground.
It can be visited for free almost every day of the year, and it is a visit that can last between 10 and 15 minutes. It is also worth enjoying the views from the park that surrounds it, and you can even easily go to the Parque del Oeste and different points in the center of Madrid.
