    Joking in a second language really is something you have to work on if you want to master it. Nikolaj seems to be misunderstood a lot in interviews when he's joking, even with him speaking such a fine english. Must be the nature of scandinavian irony that does'nt translate quite as well as he thinks.

    • @overthewebb
      @overthewebb 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      He translated well to us Brits who use sarcasm as humour as do you guys in Norway and Scandinavian countries. It's only Americans who don't get this humour. Us Brtis and I'm Scottish, we are similar people, we have the same ancestry and humour imo.

    • @treydrier3169

      Skavlan (the interviewer, who suggested english) is Norwegian though. Perhaps a bit confusing this to foreigners because Scandinavians talk to each other in each others respective languages. This might confuse people thinking there is just one language spoken.

    • @Innoz1337
      @Innoz1337 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Danish Norwegian and Swedish are roughly the same langauge with different dialect, roughly..
      The written language is more similar than the pronunciation of the words.
      The pronunciation can get so wildly different it's like a different language, but in general the norse understand each other if they talk very slowly amongst each other..

      Don't know about Nikolaj, but you're definitely kidding here. "Subtlety" and "Game of Thrones" are two things that cannot even be mentioned in the same sentence, and any subtext and character arcs that can be found in the show are only there because the show runners couldn't be bothered to do any work and lifted them wholesale from the books, all the while completely missing the point of what Martin was going for.

    • @tosvus
      @tosvus ปีที่แล้ว

      Most times I've heard that used like "smacking your lips" after putting on lipbalm/lipstick though. Also, in anticipation of eating, rather than actually making the sound when eating. I think we just use more detailed terms, like slurping, but lack the overall term that translates more precise to its Scandinavian counterparts. There could be some obscure word nobody uses though, the english language has an insane number of words compared to most others.

      phombuspucker Ah, but 'smaske' specifically and only means 'smaske' which is that specific type of lip smacking. Smacking in English can mean many different things so usually you'd say 'lip smacking' and even then that has to cover a few different types of lip smacking. Usually English is much more verbose and Danish is the one lacking the verbage for translation, but weirdly enough not with lip smacking. We've really got our linguistics priorities right eh?

    Really like this guy and not just for GOT but all the other movies he has been in, he's really an exceptional actor. I only wish I could talk or even understand all these different languages that it seems like everyone in the Scandinavian Countries know. If the wife ever passes, I'm moving that way... (She hates it over there and I don't believe in divorce)

    I find it fascinating how when he acts as Jaime he speaks English with zero accent yet naturally he still does. I wonder if he could talk like Jaime in real life if he wanted to. Like can he flip it on like a switch

    • @av9706
      @av9706 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes usually acting coaches on set help the non native speakers actors to master and do the perfect accent. You do it everyday before shooting a scene but it's great!
