  • www.londonwingchun.co.uk/wing-... ► Wing Chun uses the technique of Man Sao for various reasons that relates well to self defence. The term literally translates as ‘Questioning’ arm, but is often referred to as the ‘Inquisitive’ arm of Wing Chun. Man Sao is often thought of as the guard hand of Wing Chun. Contrary to this miss understanding Man Sao is not typically a guard as in other martial arts.
Guard hands in other martial arts or boxing are typically a technique of protecting the head or body from the attackers punches. The idea being that the arms stay close to the head in order to prevent strikes landing. In Wing Chun, the idea is not necessarily a way of blocking punches. Instead, Man Sao in Wing Chun is a technique of moving between offensive and defensive action. The shape is a method of obtaining a link or a contact (referred to in Wing Chun as a Bridge) between two bodies. It is simply a method of seeking and/or establishing contact with an attacker.
We discuss why this technique is important to control distance to your attacker, and how this technique can be used to set up a Wing Chun Chain Punches for Self Defence (also watch • A Beginners Guide to W... ). Remember, the purpose of Man Sao is to bridge contact with an attacker in order to control that person’s movement, space, and distance. The next video will cover how to use the Man Sao Wing Chun technique to set up a a trap by using a probing technique.

The whole concept in Wing Chun this to bridge the gap not keep your distance if you keep your distance you will lose but if you bridge the gap dominate the center line and protect your Centerline then Wing Chun can evolve

This is a very good explanation. I was afraid to use man sao before because it seems to make me feel vulnerable but you highlight that it's a live and responsive position and not static.

good explanation most people dont understand the difference between the form and learning structure and the actual use of that structure during an encounter. IMHO spot in explination

I see your point. I just want to sat you have the perfect body for Traditional Wing Chun. Tall thin and long reach is advantageous. But so is footwork. I'm not sure how many different type of footwork you teach. We in Cheung style do not slide our feet ..ever ..and when we block we pivot step and face the point of contact on the block. So if the opponent throws a right punch , I pivot step with left Bil Sau, face the point of contact and simultaneously right Wing chun bunch to jaw. We call the knife hand a Wu sau, but honestly I take a boxing stance because the Wu Sau is a dead give away that I know wing chun.

Nice one as always. But I find that the voice volume of the series are a bit too small. Is it possible to fix that? If so, the video will be even better!

What if the person was blind? Would wing chun still be affective?
