Had to come back here after the news. R.I.P to a HOF player and HUMAN. He epitomized the boston celtics, he WAS the boston celtics. Class and greatness on and off the court for sports and civil rights
What a great interview! Thanks for posting. I wish young boys could be exposed to men like these two. Intelligent, classy well dressed, interesting men. We need more in the world
Great guest and interviewer in his own right. His charisma and intellect shines so brightly he could have easily been a movie star or TV personality completely separate and unrelated to his legendary basketball career.
brilliant man bill russell. and still with us at 85, a black co-worker and i swapped books to read for a brief time. he gave me "red and me" which was a good read, great stories about russell's grandfather and father, both incredible men in the face of southern segregation. his father became part of the black migration to the west and north after world war II. russell clearly got the better of wilt chamberlain on the basketball court, but both were very bright and both were strong allies of the civil rights movement.
God he’s charming and not in the prepared grown in a lab affability of the modern day celebrity (not a fault to them, we’re the ones who’ve put everything under a microscope) I’m so glad he’s still kicking
If this was posted because I requested it, THANK YOU very much! Fantastic clip, love seeing athletes from yesteryear and hearing how interesting and well spoken they were.
That's not to say that athletes are meant to be uninteresting or thick - I mean that growing up in the 21st century, I usually only get to see them through their sporting highlights, not in interviews.
I've seen numerous documentaries about Bill Russel where they mention he was a very smart player and a smart man. You can see it in this interview. He's very quick witted and also introspective about things. He was a strong advocate for civil rights in the 60s, yet he spoke for himself and said he found the shows humorous and not offensive. He was an incredible athlete and a great man. RIP
Fellow Sixers fan, Bill’s the only Celtic I’d ever consider getting the jersey of, dudes beyond basketball as a person and personality, and one of my top 5 all time
As a young child, The Amos and Andy Show was very educational. The star King Fish was a self employed businessman, who always had an iron in the fire. All the characters had potent messages. Andy character was a cab driver he portray a reliable family man. Lighten play himself slow witted but he knew how with lightening speed to though off an opponent. Sapire the wife of King Fish, brought femininity to the show. She stayed out of King Fish's business but made sure he TCB. Amos character play K. F. sometime investor. He was a lady' man. The show was comedy with focus on business and family.
have nothing against the other celebs that were on this show but is this channel ever going to show the Dick Cavett shows where he interviews Jackie Gleason or Art Carney? How about any Honeymooners actors that were part of the main cast? These are rarities much like the other ones.
Bill Russell was a gansta in 2013 he was caught at the airport with a .38 caliber smith and Weston handgun and basically got told to get rid of it and go about your business.
I wonder how much money he was making at the height of his NBA career? A couple hundred thousand dollars for a single season's work maybe? Not that much? No doubt not even the best NBA player back then was being paid anything close to a seven figure amount for a single season's work.
wilt chamberlain became the first nba player to get $100,000 in 1965, bill reportedly demanded $100,001 which he got. about $800,000 in today's money. he became a player coach the next year and got $25,000 for that, how much he got along with playing isn't known, he did win a couple championships as player-coach.
The Celtics owe him for eternity. No player made a million a season, not even close. Nolan Ryan signed the first million a year contract in any sport, in 1980, and Magic Johnson signed a 25 year, 25 million dollar one in 1981. Look at what Magic and Bird did for the NBA in the 80s. They were getting paid much better, but they made an Air Jordan possible in the 90s, not unlike Bill and Wilt, for Kareem, or a Dr. J, in the 70s.
David Turner My memory for sports, and other pop culture trivia, is still with me. Though, I will admit to googling the years because I thought I might be getting them backwards, or that they both were in 80’. 🤣 My old brain isn’t as confident as it once was. I did find a couple cool factoids I hadn’t remembered. Dave Parker was actually the first to sign a contract for what seemed like more than a million a year, but the contract(Pirates) never actually paid him a million a season. That one is a whole story itself, about reading the fine print, and the drug use at the time. Second one was the first million dollar contract, was actually Bobby Hull, who signed a ten year, one-million dollar contract in 1972, for the Winnipeg Jets.

Bill Russell was always the man.
Bill Russell is such a legend. Respect
“Fine line between a groove and a rut.” That is a good approach to sense of humour.
Damn Mr. William Russell ladies and gentlemen. Brotha is sharper than a straight razor.

IF YOURE DEPRESSED JUST LISTEN TO BILL LAUGH...GUARANTEED TO FIX IT...
Big respect for Mr. Bill Russell.
I love watching your interviews. Intelligent, quick, but also patient. You were a friend to communication.
Well Said

Wow! Fantastic interview. Really interesting line "it's a fine line between a groove and a rut."

Bill Russell is so witty, yet not in an attackeful way. Just pushing you in the right direction.

Rest In Peace Bill Russell ❤️❤️❤️.
Wow first time hearing Bill Russell when he was younger, so much different now
Russell had a reputation for being introverted.
"Squeeze them togeteher you get one and a half candidates"
damn, I'd love to see this Bill Russel hosted talk show!
Bill's laugh almost makes me forget I'm a 76ers fan.
Fellow Sixers fan, Bill’s the only Celtic I’d ever consider getting the jersey of, dudes beyond basketball as a person and personality, and one of my top 5 all time
Ah yes The Celtics always kickin 76ers ass back in the 60s (beside 66-67)
The great bill russell wud be a winner in any era
no doubt about it
Russell is *_giving it_* to Cavett.
Pause
Imagine you see Bill Russell walking down the street with those pants on in 2020. Double cheeked up on a Thursday afternoon, hella ass

I like this cat
“Yes you heard that…I spread the rumor myself” 🤣🤣
I think I’m gonna move to Nebraska
dude weedlmao
why is this awkward and natural at the same time
The host doesn't seem to mind or avoid awkward silences, so it feels more human and less perfect
That's how it was back then..it's almost as if they're not aware of the awkwardness, or just don't care.
He became the Seattle SuperSonics coach a year later.
Russell coached the Sonics, Nets in NJ, the Clippers worked in the front office, a national treasure. One the GOAT.

If bill Russell would of been younger like in his 40's in 2019 😂 he would've have smoke weed, hell he would of got his own strain....😂😂😎

Should have given the word Vietnam.

It goes Russell _then_ Chamberlain. 11 > 2.
