We have a new XLine, WHAT A HUGE UPGRADE from the previous gen. We love ours. The ride is way sportier than the last version (a plus for us), the turbo motor is so much faster than the last gen v6 (at CO altitude), and the transmission is so much faster and smoother (than the last gen), and the interior is a big step up from the last gen as well. IMO the new gen is 5x better than the last gen we had. I mean i wont be offroading our Xline like this, but overall a huge upgrade for Kia SUVs The Kia Dealership said the '23 telluride will get the new sorento interior. The Sorento has surpassed the Telluride in tech for '22
We have an EX that we got for just over $30k, 2021 February. It does great in the snow, relatively deep snow too. Does fine on dirt or rutted roads. Tires are pretty bad stock for anything other than that. Its plenty fast with a very full load, and the safety combined with lane keep and adaptive cruise make it a great road trip machine. Also gets pretty solid MPG too if you drive it right. It just isnt made for much more than that.
Not surprised. This is the same trail Nathan just cake walked with the Honda Passport and it was covered in snow! Kia AWD system matched with DCT still sucks.
The last gen (2016-2020) was FAR more capable off road, surprisingly so. The traditional 8 automatic speed with the dymamax AWD system and V6 engine was a perfect drive train setup.
If you really want to take the Sorento offroad without breaking anything, the first gen is your best bet. They may not look very cool but it's probably the only body on frame Sorento before they went to unibody for the next generation.
@@damilolaakanni yes 1st gen was a real 4x4 not an AWD and where king of offroad inside Kia line up.. 2nd gen was a crap... 3rd gen V6 AWD lacked of ground clearance but was capable of some soft offroading , specially the 2019 when they upgrade from 6 spd to 8 spd tranny... 4th gen have dual clutch, witch is NOT for offrading anyhow... where the 3rd gen was a kinda "do it all" meaning average in everything but can do all (no Kevin, you cannot do rockcrawling in this), the 4th gen is mostly an asphalt vehicule but city folks won't crap their pant hitting a dirt road (wich ISN'T offroading) at 60... It's a very nice onroad family hauler. It's not an offroad vehicle. Get a Jeep if you need that. 99% of these will never go offroad and Kia knows this so it suits their target market just fine.
I was skeptical that videos from tumbleweed would be as good as those filmed on real trails. But this was incredible, Tommy really went for it. Fantastic job gentlemen.
I had a 2008 Sorento and it was body on frame V6 actual 4wd. It was a really good vehicle. Kia should have kept the body on frame setup for the Sorento.
Its ironic that the Sorento (and its original off-road capabilities) was the car that introduced Kia to mainstream America. Unfortunately, times changed and its off-road prowess waned over the years. These days the masses are more concerned with on-road comfort and Kia had to adapt or lose sales.
You’ve done 99.9% more off-road in this Vehicle, then All the Soccer Mom’s that are buying these things at $5,000 over sticker! They do look nice though! Kia is killing it lately…..
DCT and CVT equipped vehicles are now off my wish list. That is until somebody can prove to me that they are superior. Watching Tommy maneuver this Sorento around the Ranch, makes me wonder, " Did the folks at KIA have that kind of driving in mind when they designed this one?" From the looks of the tires that it's equipped with, I'd guess, not.
DCT's are fantastic.....for the road. They're the single best type of transmission in terms of performance and sportiness. They just suck off road. If you spend the vast majority of your time on road then there's no reason not to get a DCT.
I have a sorrento and use off road quite a bit. I put Falken mud and snow tires on instead of whatever goofy tires this guy is using and seriously I'm surprised how much off road traction I get.
Lets remember that KIA is the one that placed an X-Line badge on the car. At $43,000, you have to expect someone will want to compare it to a V6 Cherokee.
Please get the hybrid out there I’m very curious. I put Yokohama all terrains on mine and it handles the Michigan snow well but never took it legit off road.
As a 2021 Kia Sorento sx prestige xline owner I love it. Now I do live in Los Angeles and don’t do much off reading so it’s mainly for regular roads and every day driving but we love it. I love the look and the sportiness. It’s just been good. Only thing is I wish I had more trunk space but other then that not much to complain about. I would recommend to a family. Fun to drive for me. It was my first SUV but if I was to change it would just be because I want more space so what do y’all recommend?
You guys are awesome. Your new adventure will make you dominate truck and car reviews. Tumbleweed- put the money into the test track and you will reap the benefits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This might be a stupid idea, but just to keep some scratches at bay have you guys thought about applying some painters tape to the chins of these things? Just for sandy pits like this.
The lack of off-road capability is literally the only thing making me lean towards a Bronco/Jeep as opposed to a Kia/Hyundai. Other than that they are killing it.
Apparently X-Line in Kia means off road looks, and the upcoming Sportage X-Pro will be the offroad trim. We will see if that is actually really effective. This is like their current GT (is sporty) and GT-Line (looks sporty)
I don't understand the point of all these video's of trying to treat an SUV like a Wrangler. Who in their right mind would drive this vehicle over these obstacles?? 99.9 % of people will NEVER attempt something like this, nor should they. Driving on slick icy or snowy roads is probably the closest anybody will come to utilizing the AWD capabilities of this vehicle. A trip to the grocery store rarely involves smoking the dual clutch to the point that you can smell it!
The "point" is truth in advertising. The car come with off-road modes. What does that mean to you? This way you know -- for sure -- what you're getting for your money, and what its really capable of when it refers to off-road. The point it, you're now a better informed buyer.
Love the shows. Moved to Denver just to be close. Sounds good anyway. Please!, please!, please! do a show or series on plug in electric vehicles. I think the world missed the boat with the all electric car and the answer was there all along. Don't need to dig up the earth to make larger batteries, 90% of operation would be electric. Don't need to install fancy chargers in the home and don't need charging stations all over. What's wrong with America?? You could be the ones to break the story! See you in the mountains.

yes and no... the AWD will respond the same, so no on term of that, but yes in the end is always a question of torque available vs friction coef... even if you put a real 4x4 low gear full lock vs a 0 friction coef... it will stay there spinning like hell... so having more friction is always better and will change the outcome but the ways the AWD works won't change... the delay and the weel spin will stay there,
Isn't the DCT a wet clutch type? I suspect you are smelling the brakes as the AWD system tries to bias torque to the wheel with more grip on each axle. This is clearly a vehicle designed for on road use. Kia wanted a piece of the expanding "adventurer" market and did what they could to make this more off road capable, which is to say not a lot. Ths is NOT an off-road vehicle. However, this look like a great vehicle for most people who want to camp in a state forest a couple times a year, and commute to work or soccer practice the other 363 days. Considering those tires the AWD and traction control systems do a pretty decent job in the situations where you had opposite corners unloaded.
DCT is definitely a wet clutch. So you’re right when you put he’s smelling brakes. The DCT is a massive letdown for this vehicle. Last generation was far more capable than this year.
Wife loves her Sorento and that car is the reason I bought a Santa Cruz as a daily. Thing is fasted and more efficient than the trail hawk I had with the 5.7. Although I do miss the air suspension
I want a hybrid AWD. I don't need luxury, just the space and to save on gas, which as of March of 2022 here in SoCal is $6. Plus, I drive mostly city, so a hybrid us a must plus I don't want dual clutch, since for bumper to bumper traffic suck.
The hybrids uses a conventional 6-speed automatics. So that's for sure. Just keep in mind that the plug-in hybrid only get superior fuel economy while it operates in electric configuration.
