Ruth Gipps was an English composer and oboist born in 1921. Her Quintet for Oboe, Clarinet, Violin, Viola, and Cello, written in 1958, is a charming and lyrical work that showcases Gipps' gift for melody and her skill in writing for chamber ensembles. The piece is structured in three movements, with the first featuring a pastoral and serene opening that gradually builds to a lively and playful section. The second movement is introspective and melancholic, with a haunting oboe solo at its center. The final movement is a joyful and dance-like romp that brings the work to a satisfying conclusion.
