FreeCAD 1.0 vs 1.1.0dev beginners tutorial #10: External projection geometry new tool

After 4 Release Candidate versions of FreeCAD 1.0 we now have it as the current stable version and a new update is in development, the FreeCAD 1.1.0Dev. In the new update an interesting feature of Sketcher workbench is available. In this video you will see you we can use it to create geometry's from solid edges without needing to recreate the edges from scratch using Sketcher geometry tools.

Watched this with enjoyment from start to finish. I'm also exprimenting with external geometry and i really did got confused during pad operations when i first started using this tool, because i didn't know that free cad treats external geometry as real geometry after using that new tool. I first thought it was a bug, but as a matter of fact, it's a timer saver feature. Previously we had to use binder and then to import external geometry and to trace over it. This is much more simpler now. Nice video!

You only needed to use a binder if you're referencing something from another body. If whatever you're referencing is in the same body, you only need the import external geometry tool.

@@haysoos123 That's true, i covered only one case in my comment, but still that doesn't change the fact you would have to trace new geometry over the imported geometry again even in case where we are not using binder, so this new projection tool is a big improvement in the workflow. But i think it has one big flaw. It cannot project geometry that is part of another body. Not sure if thats done on purpose by design or they actually plan adding it later. Cheers!

In FreeCAD 1.10 dev in Preferences - Sketcher - General - make sure 'Always add external geometry as reference' is not checked for the instructions in this video to work. Great tutorial as usual - thank you OffsetCAD!

This is equivalent to Convert Entities in Solidworks. Hopefully the devs will make the Offset tool equally easy to use. I want to use Freecad more often but it's 2025 and I have been using Convert Entities since Solidworks 2011. Like and Subscribed because I learned how to use a new tool and I enjoyed watching how you solved the problem when hollowing the part.
