I realize that I have already commented on this song, but I'm going to do it again. An unimpeachable masterpiece. Deserves a billion views. And, by God, I shalln't rest until it has them.
Every time a car drives past I think it's you Every time somebody laughs I think it's you You changed your number and my phonebook's such a mess But I can't bear to cross your name out yet Each time the doorbell rings it might be you Each letter the postman brings might be from you I made a fool of myself yet once again A boy who's been this cruel looks for others to share the blame Somebody told me you went to work down south As far away as you can from my big mouth I bumped into Jane and she told me to drop dead Oh she's not to blame, I know exactly what I said Every time a car drives past I think it's you Every time somebody laughs I think it's you Every time a car drives past I think it's you Every time somebody laughs I think it's you
This song embodies the feeling of my first and only heartbreak. If only things could have been different, there's nothing like your first love, alas he said he never felt how I felt. I met my husband and love of my life soon after and I'm so thankful I'll never have to feel that kind of heartbreak again.
About 1987 I've listened to John Peels music at BFBS and bought the album (vinyl) afterwards and later the George Best + CD too - still in my "favourite records" selection! Greetings from Berlin
Excellent B-Side from the best EP the Weddoes ever did: "Nobody's twisting your Arm" 12" from 1988. 4 Tracks, 4 Hits. My copy is totally played out, so often I put it on the record player in those days.
American here. David Gedge is an unsung hero. This song is absolutely perfect.

Every time somebody laughs I think it's you
You changed your number and my phonebook's such a mess
But I can't bear to cross your name out yet
Each time the doorbell rings it might be you
Each letter the postman brings might be from you
I made a fool of myself yet once again
A boy who's been this cruel looks for others to share the blame
Somebody told me you went to work down south
As far away as you can from my big mouth
I bumped into Jane and she told me to drop dead
Oh she's not to blame, I know exactly what I said
Every time a car drives past I think it's you
Every time somebody laughs I think it's you

Any one still listening to this classic
and are they still together?
Heard them play in a park in Bradford one of the best days of my life
Saw them play last week, well 'him & current version of TWP', great as ever, long may he/they continue...
Was that Lister Park in 1988 when a load of folk got in the lake?
Yes they tour regularly … usually doing an album anniversary tour and still effing brilliant
4 minutes of phenomenal indie guitarpop magic..amazing lyrics too.
Song is an absolute beast. Fantastic in every way.

Should be listed near the top of the annals of songs about "Unrequited Love ". Great Wedds song.
Not sure its unrequited.....sounds like he had the girl and blew it.
Excellent B-Side from the best EP the Weddoes ever did: "Nobody's twisting your Arm" 12" from 1988. 4 Tracks, 4 Hits. My copy is totally played out, so often I put it on the record player in those days.
