Discover Crete: Sacred Juktas Hill

✎ Mount Juktas with an altitude of 811m. is located about 15km. from Heraklion. The ridge forms the head of an old man looking at the Cretan sky. This image made the ancient Cretan soon believe that the father of the gods, Zeus, was buried there. This myth continued in Greek and Roman times, where the name of Jupiter (Zeus), named the hill Juktas.
On this important mountain, the Minoans built two sanctuaries, one at Anemospilia at an altitude of 440m. on the northern slope and the second on the highest peak of the mountain. The sanctuary of Anemospilia was discovered in 1979 by G. and E. Sakellarakis and dates from the time of the second palaces (17th century BC).
In Vathipetro, on the foot of Juktas hill, a complete complex of grape pressing and must collection was found. It is the oldest surviving press in the world, part of the great per-Greek and Greek tradition in the construction of wine presses, many of which were carved into rocks.
