Great reading vlog! You've confirmed my interest in First Lie Wins - but you've also made me more interested in Shark Heart! I think weird books is one of the places our tastes diverge 😊 from your description and what I've heard others say, I think you're kind of right about it being a metaphor for being diagnosed with a disease - the way degenerative diseases are something people may feel almost completely in good health when diagnosed, and they slowly experience their body and/or mind changing, losing the functions it once had. Also possibly linked to disability, and the turning into animals representing the "otherness" that people are often labelled with. Intriguing!

I wasn't a fan of Shark Heart either. The funny thing is, I didn't mind the weirdness at all. I just didn't connect to it emotionally. I know I was supposed to feel sad, but I just didn't. I think I'm landing on a 3, because 2 usually means there was something I hated about it. And I didn't hate it- it just didn't make me feel anything other than intrigue about the physiological changes happening... 🤷‍♀️
(I was the same with We Spread too, lol)

Thanks for this video. I have First Lie Wins ready on my Kindle and I will be pushing it up the TBR now. I might give Check & Mate a chance because I am interested in chess -- but I do not generally read YA. You have helped confirm that I will not try Shark Heart -- not really into the weird. I appreciate your reviews.

I thought no one can know, was very average as well.. but Kate Alice Marshall is a really good writer, in my opinion. I think she would excel at contemporary fiction

I would read that from her for sure!!

I am very interested in First Lie Wins. I’ve read some of her YA romances. I’m interested to see what she does in a different genre!

I don’t think I’m going to read Bride, not my genre, but I’m excited to see reviews of it!

I agree with you about first lie wins. But I rated it a 2 star. I wanted to pick up no one can know but I’m a little nervous to now based on your thoughts.

Interesting! Well since we had different ratings on first lie wins, maybe it’ll be the same for no one can know and you’ll love it 🤣

I seem to have the dissenting opinion on Shark Heart. I gave it a 3.5

Check and Mate was one of my least fav books last year because of a lot of what you said. Their personalities were very YA but nothing else was. I wanted a true YA romance if it was marketed that way.

Yeah same! Either fully YA or fully adult I would have taken!

I also gave No One Can Know 3⭐️ and First Lie Wins 4.5 ⭐️ I’m a sucker for “con job” books 😀- thanks for reading Shark Heart so I don’t have to!

I didn’t really like Shark Heart either. I’m glad it’s not just me! I will say though, that it was memorable. I won’t forget the plot, especially the part about the woman who was pregnant with birds! 😳

The Kate Alice Marshall was a maybe for me. But now I don’t think so. I did read an unusual book that you MIGHT like. “Oh Great! I was reincarnated as a Farmer”. It is listed as science fiction. The main character is a semi-pro gamer. He is very good at games of strategy. A YA aged girl from another planet accidentally kills his body. She wasn’t supposed to, so she collects his soul (?) and takes it back to her planet to be put in body that no longer has a soul. He wakes up in an overweight male. I guess his body works exactly like his original one. But he has to learn everything, like language, work, society, etc., from the basics on up. Long story short, when given new life lessons, he automatically strategizes how he can get from point A to point B with gamer logic. He exceeds all expectations by playing the foreign system to his advantage. There are “monsters”, wolves, one giant man, and goblin type enemies that try to destroy his property and the new town he lives in. The “magic” is rendered as a computer voice that tells him he has achieved a new level, does he want to accept it or not?
I’m not a gamer, but the premise of using his gaming experience to achieve his goals was fascinating to me. This book had over 5,000 GR reviews with an average rating of 4.41 stars. It certainly isn’t for everyone, so don’t bother if it sounds too crazy for you. 😂
