It's sort of obvious that neither of your guys have suffered from clinical depression or something of that nature, but I really appreciate Dave's perspective on trying to help someone going through shit when they seem off. The whole reason I'm powerlifting is for my mental health. I've never been proud or happy or satisfied with anything about myself, and that has contributed greatly to my shitty mental state. Or maybe the other way around. But powerlifting has given me something to be proud of. It's given me a hobby to talk about. It's given me something to get out of bed for. I see progression in myself I've never seen before and after almost killing myself 4 years ago powerlifting has elevated my state of mind far higher than I've been in the last 8 years. Competing in competitions is fun, but I only have personal goals. I couldn't give a shit about being the best person in the world. I want to reach my own goals and get to the place I want to be because I know that personal progression will continue to provide me positive mental health. That's my perspective anyway.

Check out the Iron Evolution articles on T nation. Dave told his entire story on how he got into lifting.
there's a lot of open stuff he wrote regarding his depression and tough periods in his life. Him growing up and people did not believe in him because of his ADHD and failing school hard etc. I'd give it a read, Dave has been through shit and he's built a lot of mental toughness. I believe we all have our own stories.
Glad you lift man, better for anyone to lift than to stay at home locked in a room ruminating for hours on end in mental hell. (personal experience)

I'm pretty sure Joe Sullivan wrote about being depressed and using zoloft or something like that. Why would you guess they never could have been from what they said?

Been diagnosed with major depressive disorder since Afghanistan... 10 years later. Took me forever to roll out of the bed this morning to train at heavy metal in Texas. Looked up this video to get perspective. Feel much less alone and going to go inside.

Mental state is very important, that's the biggest thing you need to prep when going into a power lifting competition.

Very real video , thanks. I work 60 hour weeks and train about 2.5 hours 4x a week. Is PL my therapy? People say yes, but that amount of added stress definitely isn't therapy, I just do it because I want a 200kg squat. But people say hey you're enjoying yourself and relaxing there, that doesn't count, it's serious added stress on my system. Such is life. Thanks for a very honest video though.

I am an avid #MentalHealthAwareness advocate and performer, and I love this so much. I travel the country trying to bring that awareness on stages, in classrooms, hospitals, and on my TH-cam channel, so I get excited when I see other advocates. 💙❤

I don’t really buy into all the angsty behaviour linked with powerlifting. Some of the strongest dudes in the world are weightlifters and very rarely do you see the best throwing tantrums and head butting things whilst training.

Therapy isn't all good all the time either just like lifting isn't great all the time. Whether lifting IS therapy or CAN BE therapeutic are two different things. I agree lifting alone shouldn't be your therapy, all by itself. But you'd better believe, a guy like me who is in recovery from meth/heroin #addiction who attempted suicide by slicing my own throat (wrote a book about it), lifting CAN BE therapeutic. And whether your a competitor or an average Joe, powerlifting is therapeutic, even if it's a "bad" session just like a bad therapy session. Kids I work with start screaming and yelling during therapy, sometimes worse for other therapists, just like Joe has bad lift days, doesn't mean it can't help or be beneficial to let out.

Mental state can be rough if is bad I have been in a place where i was far too far gone to even drag myself to any training (i just starved myself took painkillers and laid on the floor) but hats serious medicinal intervention level as I have been in very severe states before : I do think focusing on something and getting your head into it helps but you cant take your baggage to training and vice versa or it will fuck you up on so many levels so i think get yourself treated properly so you can do what you love well and have that help you out in life.

  • @averyborst9534

Right when you said letting people who are already in the state to fuck shit up just let em be I do that stuff all the time with anybody I train with cause I understand when your in the mode to go go go and you have a mission being pulled out is fucking sickening

exactly what i was saying tyler. this guy is a mental case and doesnt have control or perspective on his issues. he's kind of lost with it. which is ok. but he's not in a clear and accurate area to state what's what on this. or maybe lifting for him feeds his ego in a negative way. or he's a more rare case. but yeah it helps most people. and tons of Worlds Strongest Man competitors are great, nice guys that support each other. not headbutting everything and all that. im fully cool with getting into a hulk like mode. but to say it makes things worse or whatever is bs.

You brush your left side teeth better than your right side, you should probably switch hands while brushing your teeth of just put more effort brushing your right side teeth.
