Played it back when i was 7 years old, around that time i never got to experience the story but i did play it sandbox throughout but later i bought my own copy to try it out and i played it to the end
Lol, I played this game on Xenia as well.. Emulating it is bit of pain.. Saints Row is a great game and an ultimate Gangster simulator with deep storytelling.. It definitely need Remastered which should release on multiple platform!

This was my first Saints Row game. I replayed it on xenia a couple years ago with a lot of lag, and it was a little frustrating but I did finish it.
Also, Saints Row 2 stores *did* have random sales, I think they're just not announced on radio stations

RIP saints row, gone but not forgotten. you were too good for this world, we loved you and the direct sequel called saints row 2. I swear, a lot of us didn't want you guys and gals to be replaced with whatever the hell we got for the reboot. we tried telling the developers that going after the original saints row fans was a big mistake, they should have listened to us. they should have agreed with us 100%, but now they always look at the negatives and never the positives, and now we have the saints number one enemy running volitio- *gunshot*

@@BlerdyQuad92 okay. other games in other series that have mixed reviews and they learn from the negative reviews and make their next product better. volition is different though, despite them not rolling in cash like gta, they are still every bit as scummy if not more as the game giants. they don't care about your criticisms, they won't try to improve the game and they will attack you for liking the first two games. the character of the saints row series is dead, what is left is just an IP of a once beloved series is now a series that fights its self. they clearly don't want to make another saints row game, but they only do it because it makes them money unlike a brand new IP. that is the only reason why the series will not technically die, but it's character and charm are long gone.
Saints Row 1 was the first Xbox 360 game I ever played, and honestly, I thought it was absolutely amazing as a kid. The lighting, water and shadows look incredibly good for a 2006 game. I also loved the small interactions such as robberies, the game's usage of Havok physics, purchasing items from stores such as drinks etc; these little details went a long way. The gunplay, while a little dated, is still pretty fun as well. I used to love this game, man.
They put so much little details into the game and that's what all adds up to make it a great experience

The homies in SR1 are pretty good. Unfortunately you’ll have to complete activities to unlock most of them. Zomibie Lin, Samantha, Laura and Mr. Wong to name a few.
Don't get me wrong, some of the side characters are awesome. I freaking love Mr. Wong, but my complaint was more that we couldn't have the main crew instead.

This was a great video. I never played SR1 but I watch a lot of other people play it. I loved playing SR 2 and 3. Also thank you for reminding me of all the great playa lines cracked me up.

This was a fantastic review. Im a longtime saints row fan, and from what i see most people really just talk about the second, 3rd and whatever new one is coming out. Now don't get me wrong, i love all of those games and SR2 and 3 are masterpieces, but it's great to see a genuine current review of SR1. This was my second Saints row game after the 3rd, and i have lots of nostalgia and love for it. Hearing someone mention it's actual strengths and weaknesses was great. All in all, love seeing it get some recognition (especially about it's lack of checkpoints) fantastic review! Glad our series has fans like you.
Thanks! I try to be constructive in my feedback and talk about the positives and negatives. I think SR1 is the second best game in the series, but its probably my least favorite to actually play.
I am glad that I played this first and then SR2 cause I can see how the issues U listed with SR1 can be annoying for someone who played SR2 first.. Still I say for the time it came, I love SR for the world building, its multilayer story telling, it's diverse characters and how detailed Stillwater feels despite of its age! Also, Benjamin King is just too good
Same here. Though, if I started with 1 + 2 I might have hated 3 and those after. So I dunno. This game did a lot right. I love King.

When I played this game for the first time, the first boss line I heard was the "Hope you don't mind hepatitis" line. Not gonna lie, that had my jaw on the floor.

Soothing voice and nostalgia hits me hard on this one. Remembering my long time friend and I Stealing the Vaults, testing each other to see who could unlock them the fastest. So much fun we had in the late 2000s

I was always astound that in the first sr the quality of the character models is much better than in sr2, specifically how the faces and facial animations look like, if I think about it that way, then this is my only complaint about the second game
Hmm I hadn't noticed that. My complaints with the second game are not including the Theft diversion and removing the combat effects off of drugs.

This was the first game I played way back on my Xbox 360. I only ever completed one full playthrough, and I will never play it again; That way I’ll never forget my first introduction to Stilwater and its Saints. Truly an amazing game.
What a way to cherish it, though sometimes that can make return trips even more powerful!

Sr1 is very enjoyable for its story and had the strongest gangsta, sr2 my favorite but it did have some higher level stuff like ultor and fictional gangs but still stayed true to saints row and making it 10x better story wise and gameplay
i only know that the most gangster for me in sr2 only samedi and brotherhood this two gangs are tough even Donnie said Playa should not Underestimate This red gang.. even shaundi warn playa too about Green gangs it just not normal gangs.. they are insane

These were my feelings summed up about SR1 as well. This was the last SR game I played, and I think if I had played it during the height of the multiplayer days, I probably would've loved it the way Flippy and Mr. Saints do. I get into goofy hijinks with my friends on co-op, and I could only imagine the levels of craziness I could've gotten into.
Agreed, it probably would have stuck with me more than it did.
I had the best time playing this one because I played it waaay back when it came out, when I was just a little gangster. The twist-ending even made me nervous; there was no way to know before playing the sequel if your character - or even your gang - would survive.
Trivia time!
1) The SR1 manual was designed to resemble a law-enforcement document, written by an "undercover agent" who infiltrated the Saints (who of course ended up being Troy). Inside you would find information about the gangs and their history, stains from coffee cups, and a bunch of cop-lingo.
2) Though compared to it's sequel the world of SR1 seems a bit bare-bones, there was at least one mechanic I don't think I've yet seen replicated where enemy gangs would actively attack each other. If you were in Carnalez territory for example, it would be entirely possible to see 2 or 3 cars of Westside Rollerz packed with gangsters driving down the road gunning down anyone in red.
3) I don't know if you used it or not in your adventure but the pimpcane shotgun in this game is one of the deadliest video-game weapons ever designed. Maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration as there aren't any APCs or tanks or VTOLs or battleships or death stars to test it on, but the extremely frustrating airport mission where you dispatch Angelo becomes trivial as you can destroy the aircraft during your first pass with only a few shots. Hunting down the monorails in this game and blowing them up was good times indeed.
4) Those pesky assassination activities in this game are pretty horrible, but one of the ways you can make them easier is that in your in-game menu you were actually able to select which target you were hunting at a time without having to go all the way back to the starting point for the activity. Just go to where the target is with the right weapon and you're set. I think this feature was included in the sequel, but beware as the menu I'm referring to is buried within the UI somewhere.
5) All those phone-numbers you see scattered around the games' bus stops and on billboards? Call them up sometime. Each one has a different voice line depending on who you're calling, and they sometimes have a function. Don't want to wait for one of those monorails? Don't bother! Call yourself a cab from one of the in-game cab companies and they'll take you where you wanna go.
6) One time I hijacked a Westside Roller and he shouted at me "Be careful, the 4th gear stinks!" Never forgot that man's kindness.
Had no idea about the SR1 manual, that's seriously cool I've gotta try and find some pictures of it. I've used the pimp shotgun before. Its pretty wild - I guess I'm just a little more drawn to the regular stuff but I still enjoy the goofy things on occasion :P I knew some of these but didn't know a number of them. Very cool facts, thanks for sharing!
In an Era where they shit and spit remake and remaster left and right everywhere. You would think they would remaster Saint Row. Long story short. I never played. I'd love to play it. But i won't unless they remake/remaster it.

@@Starsense PC players would of had a PC port but just like with saints row 2 they lost the sauce code and apparently as of now they have no plans for ports or remasters of saints row 1 and 2 tbh that's a shame as sales wise would of done alot better than the reboot.

There were so many amazing aspects to this game. I haven't played it in at least a decade, but still vividly remember just about everything. Also love Starsense's passion for Saints Row. It definitely shows in the videos. Very happy I stumbled across this channel.

As a teenager I was never allowed to own the GTA games due to how notorious they were, but I was able to convince my parents to get me the lesser known "clones." I spent a lot of time playing Driv3r on Xbox and Saint's Row on Xbox 360. There were definitely some cool little details in Saint's Row, like being able blow the monorail off of the track with explosives. It was one of the first games I played on Xbox LIVE as well, and had some really memorable game modes. I especially loved the one where teams had to run around the same map collecting valuables for cash to pimp a car out the fastest while being able to sabotage each other. Lots of memories while watching this video!
Actually not the first time I've heard this experience. Seems a lot of people used Saints Row as a loophole to play something like GTA, haha. Sounds like some great times.

Probably won't go out of my way to play this one and just watch the cutscenes online if I got curious, but it's a pretty decent start for the franchise. While it seems to have that SR charm, it seems a bit more serious compared to the other 3 entries; SR3 feels like the opposite of this game, with SR2 being like a balance between the two.

Yeah nothing wrong with that. Its a good game, but can be a bit tedious to get through with the respect grind and whatnot. You won't miss much by just going with the cutscenes and they aren't very long. Good way to start an SR2 playthrough.

SR2 also has those store sales that you can hear about on radios stations too btw.
I also agree about the respect grind in SR1. It is very grindy in this game.. I actually like it in SR2 as you can seem to get alot pretty quickly plus most activities are really fun.
Yeah, SR2 fixed that so I never minded it all. I just play through a few of my favorite activities and I'm set for the rest of the game. Didn't even realize it had sales. XD

From watching this video Saints Row seems like it sort of speedran the 3D GTA games' progression: the first game is the trilogy (3, VC, SA), the second is IV, and the Third is 5. 4 probably won't be directly comparable to GTA 6 (and GOH is uh, incomparable), but the general aesthetic seems to evolve along the same lines despite taking less time to develop. Probably some insight into late naughts/early 10's game design to be gleaned there.
Anyways, another great Saints Row video. You actually got me to play SR 2, and i'm going to start SR3 soon. It's a bit odd going back to the beginning of the series after starting with 4, but I can definitely appreciate what each game is as parts of the franchise, even if it's pretty clear that Volition trying to top themselves every time kinda bit them in the ass hard.
Yeah kind of, but 3 doesn't fit in with the first two at all. I usually just think of them as 1 + 2 and 3, 4 + GOOH.

I remember playing this game with my friend at his place, its one of my favorite games that were a competitor to gta, i remember the coolest thing about it was the customization and the gang style, as for the story i love it even with its grounded story that evolves around gangs, the controls were abit janky but the ability to free aim was pretty cool

Very good review. And while I agree that sexism isn't good regardless of which gender is at the receiving end, this is (obviously) pretty normal in gang culture unfortunately (some women join for these reasons), and when I see a game that goes to this realm, I prefer seeing it as uncensored because it makes it feel more real. And the inclusion of this issue makes me appreciate Lin more as a character.
Though in SR, I think it's kinda funny in sequels since even though you can play female, in most cases it still assumes you're a male since they never went through the trouble to add detail where the game acknowledges what Gender you chose.
I don't have a problem with video game discrimination when its done in a way that feels accurate. For example, Shogo Akuji in Saints Row 2 also makes women do nasty shit to him during a cutscene. However, he's meant to be an absolutely disgusting pig so it never bothered me. It just builds to the character of him being truly an asshole, without making the game feel like it wants to send this message of sexism. Cyrus Temple in SR4 when he comes after Kinzie, makes constant messages about how useless women are. It just makes him feel like a douchebag character, which he is.
The sexism in SR1 isn't limited to jerk characters, but more across the entire board. You can't play a female, all the women that do appear in the game (gang members, many npcs) are dressed in very skimpy clothing. Hell, the one I showed in the store has her nipples stabbing through the shirt like its some anime thing.
Lin is a great character, but she's the only core female gang member and also the only member that dies. They also make her start to fall for a man.
Add in the countless characters that are awful to women in the storyline. Its not just key characters that we plan to kill - its NPCs roaming around and homies you call in. (Many have dialogue lines about degrading women, such as Wheels)
It all adds up to be a constant flow of misogyny and its not enjoyable.
It makes me think the actual developers were the sexist ones, and not only the characters. This is more of what I meant when I complained about the sexism in the game.
@@Starsense Those are solid points which I failed to notice despite having played them all. Shogo's and Temple's death in those instances are definitely satisfying with how scummy they were. Shogo especially. But it was nice to see Kinzie rip Cyrus apart as well.
Ye those are fair statements. Though I personally don't think it's sexism behind the wheel. I think it just shows the demographic they aimed for. But at the same time I don't think even GTA went that far with women outside of Strip Clubs and Prostitutes so I see what you're saying.
Lin's case yeah, definitely complicated there when you bring those parts up and I totally agree. Still though, I think she's great and she didn't take crap from people.
In a real life situation (if that's what they aimed for), it was pretty bold of them to add in those things because that to me shows they are willing to take risks for controversy in their art, and as an artist at heart, I can live with that. But from just general gameplay perspective, I totally understand what you are saying.
As a male myself, it's one of the reasons I hate the She-Hulk show. Just a ton of man degrading and man hating, but it's not a creative decision. One creative example of this kind of thing against men would probably be in Zelda. In Breath of the Wild, I was annoyed that Link couldn't enter this one city ran by the Gerudo Race (mostly women) and because of their gender based culture, men aren't allowed in the city period. But it didn't take the fun out of the game for me. But I'd be lying if I said it didn't offend me to some level lol.
@@TheGravityShifter True that, though I still managed to feel sorry for Shogo by the end of it. Crazy that the game was so powerful it could make me feel emotion for a character that was practically designed for me to hate.
Maybe it wasn't but they didn't do anything to convince me otherwise. I mean you can't even play as a female lol.
I liked Lin a lot and wish she had made it into the second game alongside Johnny. They even cut her from her SR4 return :(
With all that said, I'd rather the game be offensive than so censored it has no identity like the most recent iteration. Interesting to see how far its come. Though I think SR2 had the perfect balance.

Yeah I remember that. And Donnie would've saved her and I think that would've brought closure to her character along with their relationship. But at the same time we'd have an evil Gat clone which means Gat's death wouldn't have been Retconned, so it's very conflicting on what I would've wanted in the end.
Yeah it's pathetic how lame the reboot went. Trying to please everyone pleases no one. SR2 I have to agree with that since it's more aware that it's a game, and it's more... Ig you can say artistic than realistic.
Also, the fact the Playa gets a retcon to be either gender than just the one allows for a more interesting dynamic in leadership. Also, I usually prefer playing a Female over Male a lot in games like this. Females just have more options for customizing so it's like the ultimate eye candy. But I digress.

My first introduction to saints row was at the same time to xbox 360 10 years ago when i was 9 LOL. And the guys let me play it for a little little bit because i died and needed to pass the controller!! Then i wanted an xbox 360 for Christmas and I mostly wanted to find SR 1 and 2 but i think they’re very very hard to find in Brazil. But one day i was in a video game store and found both in double pack version out of the blue!! But i had already found the third and even 4 !! It was really cool, liked it when I finished it but i have serious problems with this game, the fact you’re forced to do side missions (that in my opinion most are bad, boring and get harder) in order to do the story missions is an absurd, unbelievable! that’s my biggest problem but my 2nd is the artificial intelligence especially when you depend on it and many missions were way to tough to me lol but aside that it’s a freaking amazing game !!! I really like it !!! The customization is mind-blowing since this very first game !! The soundtrack is amazing too and i like the story and characters. The humor is pretty good too, i can imagine people playing this in 2006 in a time that there was no GTA for xbox 360 yet and in some aspects SR 1 is already more fun that some GTA games. Great video!!
yeah I'm torn on if this is my favorite saints OST or if it's 2. probably 2 but this one comes very close.

This was one of the first games I played on the 360, it will always have a special place in my heart. I don’t like comparing the series to GTA but this was like a next-gen GTA game back then before GTA4 came out. It had a “gangsta” and early 2000’s vibe to it that feels like a time capsule whenever I revisit it. A proper remake would do this game wonders as I’m sure many people would love to see the story again or for the first but with a female playa.

Was so hyped for this read about it so much over and over in gameinfromer magazine. One of main reasons I got xbox 360 back in the day over ps3 (and oblivion of course lol) played this way before gta 4, it had everything I hoped for from open world gaming felt so "next gen" compared to my ps2 lol. Saint's row 1 will forever be in my heart and would die or something if it was ever ported or remaster to current consoles 🙏

Saints Row stand on its own merit. You would be considered a criminal if you consider it a GTA clone. It sets up the bar for the series pretty high with the amount of attention to details, story, missions and even replayability. Graphics aim to be more cartoony and it executes it immaculately.

Owned the physical SR1 at one point before having to sell it (the game, not the console). The multiplayer was awesome, with almost everyone playing "Protect the Pimp" just for the op Foam Finger. Only bought the digital copy cause someone posted the long lost "Flaming Playa" easter egg on TH-cam. Shame Volition changed, but still great memories.
yeah I heard awesome things about the old multiplayer community. that's a part of saints row I've never experienced
I started with saints row 2 but saints row 1 hands down is my favorite for being the most gangster

Btw the game does have multiple secret homies by calling phone numbers you see all over the city on ads and on walls.
You can also call the cabs for fast travel instead of the train, which is also a feature in SR2.
Oh yeah, my complaint with the homies was more that I couldn't have the main cast.

I think its worth at least giving it a whirl, even if you don't commit to a full playthrough. You can always watch the cutscenes, should you decide to not go through the entire game.
The first saints row was the best just wished they had made a free mode for other people to play or co-op like the second
Best way for me cause i love this game, was to find yur favorite couple activities, count how many neighborhoods the gang has and do as many of them as possible. It was kinda easy to get like 18 bars of respect which is enough to play a while and its a good source of money and i hated being stopped just for the strongholds which contributed nothing but headache so this also helped for that.
oh yeah the strongholds were obnoxious interruptions as well

While saints row the first is created for Xbox 360. Backwards compatibly for newer Xbox’s work on the game

@@Starsense fair enough, most people don’t have an old copy at hand. I just have a lot of disk copies. So it was easier to just utilize the backwards compatibility.

When I played sr1 I imagined that Julius was spawn. They got the same voice actor and I grew up loving that show. I'd have to say sr2 was my all time fave of the saints series. Have you ever played the warriors for ps2? It's another good gangster game.

I think looking at the state of crime sandbox games the year this came out makes it a bit more obvious just how good this game was when it came out. The last GTA game was San Andreas on the PS2 and the True Crime series was mid to terrible. This was the first major 7th gen sandbox game and it came out half a year before the PS3 (which partially explains why it only released on 360).
This game kinda filled a hole people needed at the time and genuinely surpassed expectations for a "gta clone"
