Your goal of the game is to reach the top of the platforms by climbing ladders and dodging barrels or bombs so that you can save the princess from a gorilla (or other villain that the game decides to substitute in).

To be fair, Jumpman and Jumpman Jr are classics in their own right. Borrowing Donkey Kong's original name, but reinventing the platformer genre to include puzzle elements, I consider Epyx Jumpman to be the greatest platform game of all time (maybe even the greatest video game of all time), with Bröderbund's Lode Runner taking a very close second place. But I'd never call either of them a Donkey Kong "clone" as much as a natural progression for the genre.
Popeye is more of a Donkey Kong clone than Jumpman Jr is.
