The lead piece is definitely a tag from an underground telephone terminal. The tag is hand stamped in the field with the terminal number and cable count. While lead tags are still in use today, the original lead insulated underground feeder cable and terminal associated with that particular tag became obsolete 30 years ago.

Your term "Thunky" is the perfect adjective to describe some E-Trac signals. Knew exactly what you were talking about. I think you need to patent it. Congrats on the Walker! HH
You could tell I was tired? LOL. I'm glad you understood what I was trying to say about the signal using the word "thunky" That walker sounded like a big, mangled aluminum can, I assume because of the iron in the hole. I'm so glad I didn't skip that one. I may have if it was in a yard where there wasn't much of interest. But in a yard with that many desirable targets you dig it all. =) Hope to see you back out soon!
IHave watched a few of your videos now, have to admit would love to detect in your area, with all of those coin finds. ..... . . . . . When my family got its first metal detector, about 1959, my dad and I took it over to the coast and was detecting a stretch of beach when he got a real strong large target. So we dug it up and had the surprise of our lives. The first of it we found was almost 3 inches down and it was a large iron spike about an inch to an inch and a half in diameter. Dad kept digging and about another six inches down was a large metal ring. After the ring it flattened out into a large sphere, then we found a couple more of those spikes, Dad quit digging and then covered it back up, then we drug some large chunks of driftwood to cover it up and then tagged it with some crime scene tape that dad carries with him, he was a Chief of Police at the time. We called the State Trooper's explosives guys and they called the Navy EOD team down from Bremerton, WA to come down...... . . . . . Before the EOD guys showed up the State Troopers had closed about a mile of the beach. We went over to the beach the day the EOD guys was to be there to watch them disarm it or blow it up. Dad had told me about them finding a detonating these big anti-shipping mines. I had bugged him about how big of a 'bang' they made, so he was going to show me. After the EOD team swept the rest of that section of the beach with their mine detectors, they dug up the one we found, they found the nomenclature tag on it and peeled it off. They determent that they could not disarm it and they set it up to blow it in place. After setting it up to blow, one of the guys, the officer, ran some line out to where I was sitting on the dunes watching. The team members blew the siren on their truck a couple of times the using their bullhorn yelled out in all directions "Fire in the hole!" After the they cleared the beach the LT, handed me a battery and the wires and told me to blow it up. He pulled me down behind the dune and I touched the wires to the battery. That was the loudest, as an 8y/o, noise I had ever heard until I was in the Navy myself a few years later. Since then we had found a bunch of coins, an old unmarked grave, a couple of 12 pound cannonballs and a 20 pounder. We also found a small 100 pound training bomb in the sand dunes along the beach. But the Japanese anti-shipping mines was the strangest of our finds...... . . . . . I bought a brand new metal detector a couple of years ago and was only able to take it out once to play with. Only found pull tabs, nails and wire. Then a month later I had a stroke and have not been out since, for obvious reasons. I am thinking about trying to take it out this fall, since I can get out and about better now. Can only try...... . . . . . The lead tag looks like a phone line tag for a cable. CA stands for cable and then the number. I doubt is it from the cable industry. But it looks like phone line tags. They still have the lead tags on some of the old stuff in Lakeland FL.
Had to be a bunch of kid's living in that home. I always say, there's a coin in every yard in America. In this case..a piggy bank of coins. Another Tax Token..awesome. That tag looks like an old baggage tag. Great find's on the Silver's JD. Great fall weather hunt, don't you just love it? Great detail on that beautiful Walker.
I agree Keith. At least a couple kids running around that yard. I love spring and fall weather for hunting, you got that right! The walker is a beauty for sure.
Love the video . I got curious about the lead tag too and it led me to California State Route 207 . I do remember seeing tags like that but they were always on telephone poles .
Awesome digs there Jon, So great to get big silver and all silver great when you were getting that low tone when you the silver off to side I was hoping it was going to be a gold ring. Great video Jon, they probably gave it to the kids to play with. My wife gave all my marbles to the grandkids so who knows where they went. Nice tootsie car and those are made of steel I believe and the more modern ones are all zinc. The best to you and stay safe hope you find more virgins to explore. lol
That lead piece is a shipping/freight seal from the 30s-40s. After what ever they locked that seal went through the latch, the narrow end slid through the slot in the top wider piece. They used a pliers looking tool that crimped a soft brass rivet through the blank section between the numbers. If the seal was broken, the shipment was compromised.
JD, you should do a video on your approach on how you get permissions. You seem pretty successful getting them. Is there a certain approach you take to get the permission?

Thanks John! Personally I like the e-trac better, and don't hide that. And with the sunray probe my recovery time is much quicker. I've only been using the CTX after I pound a place with the e-trac, just to see if it can mop up anything I missed. Generally targets are shallow in these parts, so the added power of the CTX really Isn't necessary for the type of hunting I do. So I would rather use the e-trac because I know it down to a science, and have the quicker recovery time with it. =)
I love my CTX but I too have an Etrac with a Sunray probe. That probe saves so much time because you know whether your target is a good one. Minelab hit a home run when they developed the Etrac! Good luck on your next hunt.

I texted him last night and he just replied back. They were a mix of copper and zinc, and he didn't count them, just threw them in a bag. Yesterday he told me it was 100. I guess we'll never really know now haha
I couldn't agree more. I have had a few moments were I damaged a coin's surface and didn't even know it. I was rubbing them with a soft cloth and it still gave them the notorious hairlines. That was a while ago, now I never submit my coins to such harshness. TH-cam is a great place to learn new ideas about the care of coins. My name is Kyle By the way. Happy New Year.
Nice to meet you Kyle & happy new year! Yeah, have to be careful. Anything dry on a coin is bad. Even have to be careful with cloths and Q-tips, if they get some coarse dirt on them and you rub it across, you said it, hairlines! Water is your best friend when trying to get most of the dirt off silver.
Can I ask a question...I want to try this, but technically doesn't everything you find belong to someone else. Like if you're in a field, that field belongs to someone, so if you find some gold coins, they can claim them right. Even coins on the beach are technically the states right? ....Help me out
impassable If you are on public property it's yours if you find it. However if you find something very valuable you should check with the parks department to see if someone reported losing it. Some cities do not allow metal detecting on public property of in certain areas, so you have to check the laws in your area. As for this hunt, it was on private property with permissions. Sometimes I knock on peoples doors and ask if I can detect their yard. The arrangements are between you an the owner. Usually they say you can keep what you find, but sometimes they want to keep some of the finds. It's really between you and them for what you work out. :)

+david stabile I have done a lot of detecting in my 4 years in the hobby. I had the opportunity to metal detect around a well preserved, small, apartment complex when I lived in PA, that was constructed in the 1940's and 1950's. In less than 40 hours of hunting, I found over 80 silver coins, about 400 wheat pennies, as well as a lot of modern coinage and other unique finds. It was truly the best place I have ever detected for old coins. I have linked to the video below, as I compiled all the hunts into one upload. most everything that is marked Japan is pre 1940. (Of course if it's marked Occupied Japan is between 1935-1940) If it reads Made in Japan it is newer.
I've found 16 tax tokens, all in the same 25x25 ft area. 15 were Alabama, where I live, and 1 was Mississippi. They were cool to find! But man, nice Walker! Shame about the scratch

Never mind, I should of read the comments first. I understand it can scratch the coin, my guess would be to soak the coins in water then rinse as much as possible, then find and use a soft brush.

Thanks. Yeah, this signal was garbage because there was iron in the hole. It made a high tone, but it was a big thunky one, lol. I thought it was going to be scrap aluminum or a toy car. I don't know if they had tax tokens here, I've never found a local one. I like finding the local transit tokens. Around here they used them for public transportation and kids also used them to ride the bus. So they're always around old schools.

I'm pretty sure your lead tag is a trapper's tag. They were attached to the trap by a thin wire with the hunter's info. Great finds- great videos.

About the lead tag. Phone companies use those to identify cables that are in manholes. Was there a manhole near where you dug it up?
The phone company used the lead tags on aerial cables too after WWII
The tag was used in the CATV industry to tag house drops....
Whats the reason not to rub the dirt off and what would be the best thing to remove the dirt?

Don't coins have to be in excellent condition to have any value, apart from the silver or gold content?
+Bart Stewart Just depends on the rarity. Certain coins can be extremely worn or damaged and still be worth thousands of dollars.

I don't know if they had tax tokens here, I've never found a local one. I like finding the local transit tokens. Around here they used them for public transportation and kids also used them to ride the bus. So they're always around old schools.
