I followed the instructions that came with my airfryer to get rid of the burnt plastic smell. Then I tried the vinegar and lemon juice solution. It did nothing but make my house smell awful. Nothing worked until I tried your solution of 2 one-hour sessions outside. Thank you!!
Mine has a toxic smell wouldn't put food any where near it. Had us coughing put it outside and left it 3 x 20 min sessions. Still unsafe for use with food. These in my opinion are NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE Should not be sold like this. Manufacturer should have it ready to use as ANY OTHER PRODUCT! Why do they get away with this?
Thank you so much! I just used my (first) air fryer tonight fir the first time. I followed your advice this morning and ran through the process twice By the time I went to use my machine this evening everything was perfect. No more plasticky smell, just delicious food smells . Again I appreciate your help. Thanks.🙂
@@MelanieCooksRecipes I am LOVING my air fryer! The first meal was amazing and I have so maay other things lined up to try.. It's just so much fun Thanks for being a part of my learning process. 🌹
Thank you I will try your method. I brought the instant pot vortex and I can’t get that smell and taste out my food. I washed it with vinegar baking soda and water like that said, still didn’t work. Used it 5 times still my food taste like chemicals. I will try your method thank you!!
Melanie, I bought the same model. After a year of cooking, it still tastes of plastic. Only my brother uses it now, I'm back to the oven. Let me know if it worked
My son gave me his air fryer to get himself a bigger one, I love it, I put anything and everything in it. At 74 it and the microwave are the easiest ways for me to cook.
I would also like to know do this. Do health and safety do checks on these appliances. They should be ready for use when they leave the manufacturer. Of course I would expect to give it a little sponge down before use.
1 hour at max temperature, 2x (in the garage). Then I tried to cook food and it still made a plastic smell - but the food had absolutely no plastic smell or taste, but I was in a pretty large room that reduced the machine's recirculating of it's own air. That's when I realized the plastic parts that vent hot air out, was causing the smell. After a few uses, there isn't a smell anymore. Really not a pleasant experience trying to "season" it.
Thank you for sharing your experience! Good that you were able to finally get rid of the smell! I recently got a new air fryer that doesn't have the plastic smell, I have the video about it here: th-cam.com/video/aRC-DrhPvY4/w-d-xo.html
The burning plastic odor is generally not coming from the basket, but from the plastic half shell in between the basket and the handle. This is a piece of plastic that is basically hugging the hot aluminum basket and is the REAL culprit to the burning plastic smell. A rinse/cook with vinegar, lemon, baking soda, or what ever concoction the internet suggests for that odor will NOT resolve the issue. You need to find an air fryer that has very little plastic.
Thanks for sharing this insight! 😊 It's important to be aware of the materials in our appliances. Finding an air fryer with minimal plastic can definitely help avoid that burning smell. Your tips will be helpful for others facing the same issue! If you have any recommendations, feel free to share!
Yup thank u so much....as soon as I started getting mad dizzy, from the plastic smell I jumped into my wall an immediately felt better.i mean nothing makes me feel better after using something I bgot chemicals out of.....for a hour by the way.
@@MelanieCooksRecipes all jokes a side I literally got it out of box smelled that chemical smell unplugged it an put it back in the box. How can that be safe to cook in?????? Even if I followed what u said?
Did all this, put my new Ninja Air Fryer, 3.8 L outside ran it 3 hours, opened the drawer and let it air and cool off between each hour, and it STILL stinks as much as did on first try ???
I just use air fryer for nuggets for first time without pre heat. Second time the smell so bad the whole room smell like air poisoning I had to go online to find out why. Why my product did not state this on their instruction I can never understand.
Very helpful thanks, I just unboxed mine and the foamish/plasitc wrapping looks like it has been melted partially to the grill portion of it though... I kind of want to just return it =/ I never even turned it on so I guess it was in a hottttt warehouse?? I don't know, I spent 15 minutes scrapping it off but there's still tiny bits of melted plastic on it and I'm feeling iffy about using it.
@@MelanieCooksRecipes Thanks for responding. I looked it up. It is chemicals. I’m trying to buy the safest air fryer. I saw Instant Pot has a new one with no smell technology.
It's Emeril Lagasse 4 qt air fryer from Target. It's 4 years old and unfortunately this model has been discontinued. Here's the one I recommend instead, I recently got it and it's very good: amzn.to/3w9LEGD (*affiliate link)

I would recommend doing this process outside because it will absolutely make your whole house smell toxic. I don’t think it would hurt you but it doesn’t give me confidence lol
Should be ready to use when sold. Why do manufacturers get away with it? not put it through all this detoxification process? Is there no health and safety standards anymore?RIDICULOUS. I've already spent hrs on it put it outside and I won't use till burned paint smell completely eradicated

Hi Melonie did you get rid of the plastic smell i just bought this model ?
Mine doesn't smell like plastic, I got rid of the plastic smell completely after doing the steps I show in this video
@@MelanieCooksRecipes Have you tried the insta vortex. I tried your steps and has seemed to help the small a lot thanks.

Yes you can cook most things in the air fryer, it’s so convenient!

After washing and drying baskets, use 1tbs vinegar and 1 of lemon juice in small glass bowl. 400 degrees for 10 min.
Thanks for the tip!
Trying this now

Not sure, I got rid of the smell of my air fryer completely and use it almost daily... There are no guarantees :)

Yes they never state it on instructions for some reason
Thank you for this video I'm gonna try it with mine 💯

My manual says preheat 10 mins on maximum to get rid of the smell which clearly wasn't long enough, will try 1 hour now
Yes! And if 1 hour doesn't do it, then do it for another hour. The smell should go away eventually. Please let me know how it goes!
It’s more than just plastic. It’s the circuit board resin heating and curing.
Lol wish they heated and cured it at the factory :)

Same, 130$ wasted.

What is the smell from and why does this make it go away?
It’s poison
Not sure, must be some chemical residue from the factory. Washing and burning it off with high temp cooking makes it go away

Try washing it again and running it at 400F on empty for 1 hour again (and again). If it still smells, I would return it and get a different brand
@@MelanieCooksRecipes Thank you Melanie, I already returned it for a different brand
Try using lemon juice and vinegar.
Is it ok if the basket is not fully dryed ? Whenever i wash it i leave the basket to dry completely for a day .
It’s totally fine, cooking in the air fryer will fry up any water that was left
